Just in case you haven't heard it yet, it's almost undoubtedly the single of the year thusfar.

Tweet - "Turn Off Da Lights"

and

"Turn Off Da Lights" (Remix f/ 50 Cent)

If the Amerie thread got 100 replies, I expect this to get 300 by the end of the week.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 11 March 2005 06:35 (fifteen years ago) link

between this and "On Fire", Kwame is godlike in my eyes right now

Al (sitcom), Friday, 11 March 2005 14:25 (fifteen years ago) link

KWame as in polka dots Kwame?

In this case, I guess so. Not impressed by 'TODL' at ALL.

KWAME SO HOT RIGHT NOW

monia.l (monia.l), Friday, 11 March 2005 15:03 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, the Tweet's OK, but not really doing much for me. Amerie for me, plz.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 11 March 2005 15:33 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah polka dots Kwame.

let's please not make this a Tweet/Amerie fite thing, there's room for more than one good new R&B single (by my count there's at least 8 right now).

Al (sitcom), Friday, 11 March 2005 15:38 (fifteen years ago) link

But "Mr. Brightside" isn't r'n'b. *flees*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 March 2005 15:39 (fifteen years ago) link

Name 'em, Al! Tweet & Amerie, but then what? Mario? Ciara? (Plz don't say Omarion.)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 11 March 2005 15:41 (fifteen years ago) link

John Legend should be on the list. As should Mario, though radio overkill has hit that one in a BIG way.

Tori Alamaze - Dont cha

djdee (djdee2005), Friday, 11 March 2005 16:02 (fifteen years ago) link

only ones I had in mind that haven't been mentioned yet:
Tyra - "Country Boy"
and maybe "Lovers & Friends"

Al (sitcom), Friday, 11 March 2005 16:03 (fifteen years ago) link

and maybe the new Mario single. I wasn't wild about it at first, but for chrissakes, he talks about "the ghetto Kama Sutra" in the chorus.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 11 March 2005 16:04 (fifteen years ago) link

I like that Tyra song, it sounds like something that would have come out when i was in high school (4 years ago)

There's that "Let Me Love You" remix but the beat is scott storch in banger mode and it has MCs on it so I guess its not really R&B as such.

djdee (djdee2005), Friday, 11 March 2005 16:04 (fifteen years ago) link

You had me until SHORRDAY.

Whoa whoa "the ghetto Kama Sutra"!!!!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 11 March 2005 16:05 (fifteen years ago) link

also I haven't heard it yet but I saw a new Lil Mo 12" in the store the other day!

Al (sitcom), Friday, 11 March 2005 16:06 (fifteen years ago) link

I think this year is going to be like '03 in that good R&B singles are going to far outnumber good mainstream hip hop.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 11 March 2005 16:07 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't know why, but I have not heard "Oh!" on the radio (in CT) - they're still boombangin' the hell out of the first 2 singles, tho. & I really wish they'd stop playing the Fabolous remix of "Get Right" - the version from the video is a LOT better.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 11 March 2005 16:10 (fifteen years ago) link

I just started hearing "Oh!" on the radio this week. the station here plays a version of "Get Right" with the original sax loop beat w/ the Fab verses on it, which is the best of both worlds really.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 11 March 2005 16:13 (fifteen years ago) link

Why's Missy doing the Puffy "I'm about to lose my voice I'm yelling so specially and pointlessly over the beat" at the beginning? I really do expect her to say "Bad Boy" or "And we won't stop, cause we can't stop" or something.

matt2 (matt2), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:21 (fifteen years ago) link

I love Tweet and I like this.

Still not heard Amerie but why don't one of yous gmail me something something.

Yeah actually I would like to hear Amerie too.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:41 (fifteen years ago) link

the nicest thing i can say about this is that it's interesting. unfortunately i'm not really feeling it.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:49 (fifteen years ago) link

I must confess that I identify with Missy in that whenever I hear it I want to yell "WICKED!" and run it back to the beginning over and over.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:58 (fifteen years ago) link

It's funny because it's like Missy and Lady Sov switched for their Current prospective releases.

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:00 (fifteen years ago) link

270 to go.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:19 (fifteen years ago) link

haha good luck. I'm afraid your bringing up Amerie as a point of comparison in the very first post insured a lot of wet blanket responses.

EXACTLY

For the record, Missy is fucking fabulous on this song.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:22 (fifteen years ago) link

ori Alamaze - Dont cha

On dissensus I read this as Tori Amos. hah. THen I realized this was the song that had been stuck in my head the past day. It's great, but not sth I like having stuck in my head as I can only remember the nervous delivery.

Tweet's single is pretty good.

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:34 (fifteen years ago) link

Has anyone heard Rjd2's Tweet remix?

JoB (JoB), Friday, 11 March 2005 22:07 (fifteen years ago) link

I want to.

djdee (djdee2005), Friday, 11 March 2005 22:11 (fifteen years ago) link

The album is completely bonkers and WONDERFUL. Tweet is a great singer and an even better -- weirder -- songwriter: "You must be sort of deranged / Your worth is less than small change / To cry that to me is sort of insane"....

And let's just list samples here: "Sports, Sex, and Food" is insane Missy production with a Meters sample; "Cab Ride" is a bittersweet song over Bob James' "Taxi" theme; Missy uses Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust".

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:19 (fifteen years ago) link

are there any noise/prince ballads like "drunk"? keep talking about this; this probably won't hit NZ for months.

etc, Friday, 25 March 2005 16:08 (fifteen years ago) link

rolling stone gave this ONE star!!

so it must be good, obv..

special guest appearance, Friday, 25 March 2005 16:12 (fifteen years ago) link

There are no guest appearances by Mick Jagger.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 25 March 2005 16:14 (fifteen years ago) link

Besides the (great) single, I only like "Sports, Sex & Food". Very tedious, unfortunately.

JoB (JoB), Friday, 25 March 2005 16:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Very wrong, unfortunately.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 25 March 2005 16:51 (fifteen years ago) link

This is still single of the year, for the record.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 25 March 2005 17:36 (fifteen years ago) link

I like it, not really in my top twenty or anything right now tho.

deej., Friday, 25 March 2005 19:22 (fifteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...
Anyone who doesn't rate this as single of the year so far is simply wrong. The first five seconds (with the sped-up Marvin Gaye sample) are simply blissful, and Missy is fabulous as always.

baboon2004 (baboon2004), Friday, 8 April 2005 23:35 (fifteen years ago) link

awesome.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 9 April 2005 00:05 (fifteen years ago) link

two months pass...
every time i hear this i'm like, huh why does missy like this so much if it's not doing much for me; later on in the song i feel the beat more, but it hasn't yet taken over enough to where missy's enthusiasm seems unforced. i mean, it's good, but it doesn't do it for me yet. (missy's verse here is great, despite her almost falling asleep during!)

there's some really sophisticated songwriting-production-arranging (hard to separate them with the particular things they're up to here) on the album.
