C/D Noel - "Silent Morning"

Here in Miami (freestyle capital of the world) we used to hear this song at 8th grade parties, rollerskatin' at Hot Wheels. All the girls thought this was a frisky number, and it is, but even then I always thought it was unbearably sad.

I heard it driving home drunk real late the other night (the best way to evaluate music) on one of those mega-mixes and thought it still sounded spectacular. Dave Marsh claims this song has all kinds of gay subtexts; I know shit about Noel, so who knows?

Anyway, does anyone remember it?

Classic...this used to always get paired with True Faith on the radio. I file this with The Great Commandment by Camouflage...Synth-pop imitators.

Paired with "True Faith"? It's the beginning and end of a relationship in seven minutes!

"Silent Morning" enjoyed a Warholian fifteen minutes of fame at some point in the late 80s. For a breif season there it was THE SONG you heard on every dancefloor in NY. I vaguely remember witnessing a "track date" performance by Noel in some godforsaken nightclub. It's kind of a cover version/appropriation of "The Mexican," no?

I always thought it was unbearably sad.

A rarely acknowledged fact about most freestyle lyrics.

Just heard this the other day, it's the female answer track to "Silent Morning." Not as good as the answer track to "I Wonder If I Take You Home."

Occurs to me this thread actually needs "Silent Morning" itself:

Did anyone tape Maura's freestyle presentation from EMP two years back? Still one of my favorite things from all the Pop Conferences I've attended.

Whoa, THERE'S some trivia -- the guy who directed that, Mark Pellington, ended up directing the videos for "Jeremy," "One" and a slew of other videos up to the present day:

All praise to Dave Marsh for including this single in his book!

Up there with "One Way Love" as my favourite male-lead freestyle single; glad to hear it on a bunch of mixes lately (Eclair Fifi using the acapella on her FACT mix, and Speculator from our parish).
