OK. So fire away then ;)

Well, I guess, after several vicious attacks on various other musicians, I expect some attack back.

Anyway, as I hinted about in another thread, I have gotten round to record some of my own music, and I have started by putting out one song on the Uhört-site, which is sort of the Norwegian answer to mp3.com, only with a huge radio station having a 2 hour show a day playing the best stuff from the site.

My profile is here: http://www11.nrk.no/urort/user/?id=13875
There will be more stuff there later on, but I stick to one song, giving it a a few weeks of rotation time before I put a "followup" out.

Btw. the song "What's Up With You" is about as Geir as it can get, influenced by arche-melodic classic pop from the 60s and 70s :). I will probably put out some more synthy stuff later on (did record a couple of great electro tracks). In the meantime, at least here is one sample.

omg.

lemme guess, did you specifically add the 'e' to 'hongroe' to complete the "oh negro" anagram?

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 5 March 2005 00:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Hmm. I guess I should have called this thread something along the lines of "my music" or something boring like that instead.

Btw. the e was added because
1. the name Hongrø _is_ most correctly written Hongroe in English
2. it looks more right, a bit like Monroe...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 5 March 2005 12:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Listening right now -- all is as advertised, and the intro is sublime. I especially like how the link to play is called "last ned".

brianiac (briania), Saturday, 5 March 2005 14:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Madness. There will be eternal neds.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 5 March 2005 14:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Well, I've been through it now, and I've gotta say it's one catchy hum, like Jeff Lynne on a budget. I love a sunny tune about something dark.

brianiac (briania), Saturday, 5 March 2005 14:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Mr. Hongroe, this is great. I'm hearing bits of Gilbert O'Sullivan amongst other things. The syn-drum sounds are classic. Keyboard solo too. I'm eating chocolate and grinning like crazy right now.

Freewheelin' Husky (noodle vague), Saturday, 5 March 2005 15:17 (nineteen years ago) link

I've got some reactions from people who are _into_ that kind of style that the synths and 80s drums don't quite fit in, thinking they sound "cheap". :-)

However, my point is that traditional song-based melodic music needs to escape this fear of synths, or the entire idea of melodic song-based music will die from lack of appeal to younger generations. So the 80s-like bits are certainly put there on purpose.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 5 March 2005 15:20 (nineteen years ago) link

I like the way you've used those sounds, I don't think they sound cheesy in this context at all, the arrangement is really nice.

Honestly, I'm staggered, I'm playing the thing on a bloody loop. More soon please.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Saturday, 5 March 2005 15:26 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm not crazy about the electronic instrumentation (does that prove my aesthetic is more old fashioned than yours, Geir?--but I'm not against all electronics really), and I find the song a bit too long, but I do like the catchy melody.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 5 March 2005 15:38 (nineteen years ago) link

The melodies are quite nice, as w/ the production values but the drums could use a little play and intricacy -- the straight beats feel somewhat plodding? A few more fills and rolls, maybe just a bit more looseness?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 5 March 2005 15:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Agree about the drums. I am not a drummer, and probably a drummer would have done better with programmed drums too.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 5 March 2005 15:48 (nineteen years ago) link

The banjo is v. nice, reminds me of Sean O'Hagan.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 5 March 2005 17:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Banjo? You mean sitar?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 5 March 2005 17:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Is it sitar? It sound like a banjo to me.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 5 March 2005 17:54 (nineteen years ago) link

i really, really like this. not sure about the intro, but the cheesy widdling noise comes into its own in the middle eight. i like this a lot.

Each is free to interpret the words, but you may have a point. ;)

Yay Geir!

donut debonair (donut), Saturday, 5 March 2005 21:45 (nineteen years ago) link

I like it. I think, like others say, elements like the chiming piano and drums could be a bit more dynamic - drop 'em out, bring up levels etc. Nice melodies, but (until the break 2/3 of the way through) it feels a bit plodding.

paulhw (paulhw), Sunday, 6 March 2005 00:26 (nineteen years ago) link

It sounds a bit like what would have happened if Jeff Lynne had produced a cover of B.J. Thomas's "I Just Can't Help Believing."

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Sunday, 6 March 2005 20:27 (nineteen years ago) link

I played it once and I can't shake that chorus, though it should have faded out at 3'48. Respect to Geir. If there is ever an ILX Travelling Wilbury's he's definitely their Jeff Lynne, what with the vocoders and harmonies.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 7 March 2005 16:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Good stuff Geir.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 7 March 2005 17:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Good to see somebody finally mention the harmonies. Together with the middle eight, they are the part I am most happy about myself :)

Thanks for all kind words anyway. I guess I could do some editing, but would be tough to make it run for much less than around 4.50.
