Judas Priest's "Living After Midnight" always sounds like Lou Reed's "Vicious" to me.

When I first hear Creed's "Higher" I thought it was "Feel Like Making Love" by Bad Company. Not that it matters as I deeply hate both songs.

How about Time of the Season and Stand By Me

I noticed this just last night, trying to play the bass part to Time of the Season.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:35 (nineteen years ago) link

The Only Ones' "Another Girl, Another Planet" and Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'"

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 21:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes "Shock to the System" & Motley Crue "Primal Scream"

descendants of deceased, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Sugarloaf's "Green Eyed Lady" and Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out"

to me at least

_________, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:08 (nineteen years ago) link

somebody, probably alex in nyc, pointed out that killing joke's "blood on your hands" is essentially the same song as motley crue's "looks that kill".

No it wasn't fuckin' ME and they sound NOTHING alike. The Crue ripped off the middle-eight of "Love Like Blood" for the intro to "Dr.Feelgood", if that makes you feel any better.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 3 March 2005 00:21 (nineteen years ago) link

The Cure's "The Holy Hour" and Killing Jokes' "Eighties"

Tall Dwarfs "Crush"

The Cure's "The Holy Hour" and Killing Jokes' "Eighties"

In your spooge-splattered wet dreams, peasant.

"Take Me Out" sounds a little like "The Wind Beneath My Wings" if you haven't slept for 24+ hrs

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 3 March 2005 01:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Beck "Novacaine"
Alice Cooper "Lie Down And Die Goodbye" (specifically, the rock out part.. same notes and progression)

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 3 March 2005 01:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Pixies "I Bleed"
Weezer "Sweater Song"

You can almost sing one's lyrics over the other's tune, interchangably.

Eddie & the Hot Rods - Do Anything You Wanna Do
The Records - Starry Eyes

Do you have any reason to believe this was intentional? I haven't heard the Hot Rods song, but the idea of there being a link between these two bands is rather interesting, I think.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Thursday, 3 March 2005 05:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Britney Spears - Lucky
Ben E. King - Stand by Me

Voodoo Man (Voodoo Man), Thursday, 3 March 2005 07:09 (nineteen years ago) link

Prince does this a lot, but my fave unmentioned one is '1999' and 'The Bird' by The Time.

BARMS, Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Start (The Jam) and Taxman (I forget who does it)

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:49 (nineteen years ago) link

As far as I can remember, alot of Flipper's stuff and alot of Joy Division's

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:59 (nineteen years ago) link

The Minutemen "No One" -- Jane's Addiction "Pigs In Zen"
The Minutemen "Stories" -- REM "The One I Love"

Two songs on the same album no less. "Stories" even has a bit of 'the one I love' in the lyrics. "No One" is really the riff more than the way the lyrics work over the song.

Also 1999 and Manic Monday.

harveyw (harveyw), Friday, 4 March 2005 15:41 (nineteen years ago) link

here's an incredibly tenuous one but there are some interesting similarities between St Etienne's 'Nothing Can Stop Us' and Was Not Was's 'Wheel Me Out' - specifically the tone of the female 'narration in character' style just floating over the beat and the funk guitar twangs. i wonder if the latter provided some inspiration for the former at all...

Sven Bastard (blueski), Friday, 4 March 2005 15:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I can sing the chorus to The Monkees' 'Valleri' over the top of The B-52's 'Private Idaho' -- same ascending 4 chords.

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Friday, 4 March 2005 17:17 (nineteen years ago) link

"When the World is Running Down" by the Police and "Sentimental Man" by the Dismemberment Plan. I always think, wtf? Dismemberment Plan on the radio? whenever I hear the Police song come on.

mr. drew (mr. drew), Friday, 4 March 2005 18:03 (nineteen years ago) link

The bass riffs of Queen's "A Kind Of Magic" and Harold Melvin's "The Love I Lost" are one and the same.

I did hear that John Deacon loved old R&B records!

Fountains of Wayne's "Red Dragon Tattoo" sounds like the entire early '70s Steve Miller catalog.

sorry if mentioned already, but I always think Joe Jackson's Breaking Us in Two bears resemblance to Badfinger's Day After Day.

dan selzer, Sunday, 3 March 2013 23:24 (eleven years ago) link

Great idea for DJ Shadow, if hasn't already done this -- scratch "DJ's the man we love the most" over Midnight in a Perfect World.

Does anyone know how to get in touch with him?

space phwoar (Hurting 2), Monday, 4 March 2013 01:04 (eleven years ago) link

I've been using this other thread for the past several years; songs that sound like other songs

Johnny Too Borad (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 4 March 2013 01:19 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah the internet is wrong on that. Though it is interesting given the fact that Midnight in a Perfect World also samples a song called "Sower of Seeds".

This might be a stretch, but it just occurred to me that King Floyd's 'Groove Me' and the Rolling Stones' 'Tumbling Dice' have a fairly similar verse structure.
