Rhymes I never want to hear again

Inspired by Snappy, who objected to the rhyme of "remember" with "December" in

so why dont you like tv on the radio?

I don't mind that one so much. But I never want to hear "love " rhymes with "stars above" ever again.

And that Patsy Cline song where "love" rhymes with "mating of the dove" is not okay either.

Oh, and when I am king of the world, "night time" shall never ever be permitted to rhyme with "right time." No, not ever if you're Ray Charles.

Nor shall "charms" be permitted to rhyme with "arms."

Thank you. That is all.

I suspect we will never be able to shake free from "throw your hands in the air / and wave them like you just don't care"

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 31 January 2005 19:57 (nineteen years ago) link

that one's only okay when used with strong ironic sensibility.

You need to be yourself
You can’t be no one else
I know a girl called elsa
She’s into alka seltzer
She sniffs it through a cane on a supersonic train
She made me laugh
I got her autograph
She done it with a doctor on a helicopter
She’s sniffin in her tissue
Sellin’ the big issue

no one like noel gallagher to rack up the triple word scores on bad rhymes in one verse

You and I've got what it takes to make it
We won't fake it, Oh never break it
'Cause I can't take it

Do I even need to mention almost every single rhyme in U2's "Elevation"? Good God it is terrible.

High, higher than the sun
You shoot me from a gun
I need you to elevate me here

A corner of your lips
Is the orbit of your hips
Eclipse
You elevate my soul....

A star
Lit up like a cigar
Strung out like a guitar
Maybe you can educate my mind...

A mole
Digging in a hole
Digging up my soul now
Going down, excavation

Higher now
In the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high
Elevation

mrjosh (mrjosh), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Or, in more condensed form: sun/gun, star/cigar/guitar, mole/soul (?!), and sky/fly/high are big offenders

mrjosh (mrjosh), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:20 (nineteen years ago) link

this doesn't really count, but I hate it when the end of one couplet is 'fire' and the the beginning of the next couplet is 'flame', as in the recent Beastie Boys single.

Also, I hate any instance where an extraneous 'today' is thrown in purely to make a rhyme work.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:24 (nineteen years ago) link

As of now, no one is ever allowed to rhyme "day/say/pay" with "thirs-TAY" unless you are Notorious Z.O.M.B.I.G

"Also, I hate any instance where an extraneous 'today' is thrown in purely to make a rhyme work."

clearly, this applies to baby as well.

All "self"/"shelf" rhymes.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:35 (nineteen years ago) link

I think all "baby" rhymes should be allowed due its inherit musicality.

Austin (Austin), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:51 (nineteen years ago) link

I wish that I could fly
Into the sky
So very high
Just like a dragonfly

I’d fly above the trees
Over the seas in all degrees
To anywhere I please

Oh I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah yeah yeah

Oh I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah yeah yeah

Let’s go and see the stars
The milky way or even mars
Where it could just be ours

Let’s fade into the sun
Let your spirit fly
Where we are one
Just for a little fun
Oh oh oh yeah !

I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah yeah yeah

I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah yeah yeah

I got to get away
Feel I got to get away
Oh oh oh yeah

I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah with you yeah yeah
Oh yeah !

I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah with you yeah yeah
I got to get away

I want to get away x4
Yeah
I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah with you yeah yeah
I got to get away

I want to get away x4
Yeah

I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah with you
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

For the thousandth time, "FIRE/DESIRE" should be outlawed.

Also: Money/honey, insane/brain, all right/all night (similarity to nighttime/right time noted)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Riot Gear is 100% OTM. possibly the worst lyrics of all time. ever. also: good/understood

chris andrews (fraew), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Maybe/baby is overused, but I like it anyway. x to fact cuz: I'm kind of tempted to write a song only using famously unusual rhymes from other folks' songs.

Why must RAIN always fall on s songwriters' window PANE? Nobody else ever talks about a window pane except when it breaks and you need to ask for a replacement at a hardware store.

assseenontv (j22433), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 05:14 (nineteen years ago) link

morning/warning

just kidding, that one's awesome! especially if "warning" is preceded by "without" and "morning" is preceded by "boy have I got a boner this"

Huk-L, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Why must RAIN always fall on s songwriters' window PANE?

I'd be more impressed if they were talking about their window pain (i.e. "A loved one fell out of 2nd story window and died, I AM STILL HURT, MANG").

LOTION.

I submit that never in the history of music has anyone actually had anything to say about any kind of lotion. It is invariably just a cheap, lazy choice of rhyme.
Cool J gets a free pass on this one, but Lou Reed can go grow another mullet.

m0stly clean (m0stly clean), Friday, 25 March 2005 02:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Ultra-clever rhymes are awful as well, especially when strain is showing - when it's clear that the whole verse was motivated by the rhyme scheme. i just got a promo kit from some indie fuxxor whose publicists are all "OMG [the kid] is so smart, check out this awesomely literate rhyme: 'I am young and I am lost / You respond to my riposte.'" Into the garbage the kit went, needless to say.
