Because the goddam truck won't start

Caroline just bought a David Allan Coe record. DAC writes some really racist and homophobic lyrics. She genuinely likes it. She's a community organizer on the Lower East Side. He's got some good lines. "My long hair can't cover up my red neck." But I wonder about this. She knows how horrible he is. (btw Anthony my conscience is free, Dolly's record made my top 5 of 2001) I'm just not sure about this dude. And not just him. A lot of new country sucks really really bad, especially the chart-toppers, where it's just sub-Disney soft-rock with a twang. It's like all the rebellion's been hammered out of it already, so these random fucks with mean-spirited politics look to rebel the way they know how.

DAC is johnny rebel for new york hipsters . the problem is there is so ,uch great country coming out right now, and this fantastic bluwgrass revial and yr right this safe poptry is geetting the attention

Like this walking Soloflex advertisement who goes out with Shania Twain. Oh Lord he's bad.

In Texas DAC is the patron saint of frat boys. I'm sorry to hear that NY hipsters have become *that* misguided. Want good contemporary honky-tonk? Check out Dale Watson.

re bluegrass revival: Anthony have you heard 1946?

Samantha, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

tell me more.

anthony, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Check out Dale Watson.

Dale is a fucking *god.* Love that man. But I wouldn't recommend starting with his newest album -- it is utterly, totally fantastic, I should note, but dedicated to and all about his lover, who died in a car accident. As a result, his humor is understandably absent. Try one of the earlier albums instead (and you can find out more about him at his site<

Ned's on the money about Dale. When I lived in Austin I used to see him every Thursday at the world-famous Ginny's. *sigh*

Here's a profile of Dale in a nutshell that I wrote for Citysearch along with a profile of my favorite beer joint.

Re: 1946. I only heard them on NPR but plan on picking up their record. Very true-to-form bluegrass along Bill Monroe and Flat & Scruggs lines.

Yeah you fuckers go get some country. Seriously though I don't want to patronise because I'd put a bet on that there are people here who really like country and know way more about it than I do. However I think it's fair to say it's the most overlooked genre on ILM.

the renderers fuckin rule.

di, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I had country singles all over my list

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Renderers! Wonderful live, those two.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Renderers are fucking country? (Not that I'm quibbling; what I've heard of 'em, though, doesn't bring "country" to mind.) Is this the NZ band?

Stuff like Danielle Howle and the Scud Mountain Boys (ever-so-vaguely country) makes me happy. Stuff like Neko Case & Laura Cantrell & the Mekons posse intrigues me. If you want something to be discussed, DISCUSS IT, y'all.

Can someone tell me the deal w/Jimmy Dale Gilmore? The man is an enigma to me. Like Lefty Frizzell incarnate but always just under the horizon. or we could discuss the strange state of "pop" country. both!

Tracer Hand, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Speaking of country, I want a broader description of it. Are alt- country acts still considered country, or are they simply alt now? What about people like Smog, Songs: Ohia, Black Heart Procession, Vic Chesnutt, are they country? Is the majority of bluegrass considered country?

Jeff, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Jimmie Dale Gilmore was part of the Texas dustbowl kids, I think they were called the Flatlanders, along with Joe Ely and Butch Hancock. Gilmore is the most artsy of the bunch, I think--he has impeccable taste in covers, but his voice is an acquired taste. Along with Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt and others, he formed the Austin/western sound to a certain extent.

i like will oldham too.

and as for non-alt country, i love johnny cash and hank williams. and (moment of confession) i like some of leeann rimes' songs.
