Lilys reissues?

If you go to the Insound website, there is a sidebar on the left that suggests that the Lilys masterpieces A Brief History of Amazing Letdowns and Eccsame The Photon Band are being re-issued this week. Does anybody know anything else about this? There is nothing about it on Insound, Amazon, Returns Every Morning, Manifesto, or Spin Art web sites. As nerdy as it is to say, these are my favorite records, and I am pretty darn excited about this, even tho I've already owned them both for over 10 years.

was the reissue of the last album with the three new songs worth it? i thought 'precollections' was great though it seemed to be rated a dud by everyone else.

Precollections is a dud, relative to these records. Otherwise it is a fairly servicable effort.

i don't like old model lilys.

keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 7 November 2004 00:36 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm sort of glad to hear that. Just because nobody seems to like new model lilys, and they deserve attention.

heasley really let me down with the latest album. musically, it's awesome. melodically it is a big fat mess. there's so much potential in the music for really strong, catchy melodies and he blew it.

I only like old model lilys.

Precollection disappoints almost everyone at first. I trashed it to pieces after a couple weeks, then changed my mind a few months later. It's pretty great, but the production is kinda bizarre and between that and the sequencing it's a tough sell. The three added songs on the Brit version (plus a couple tracks got spruced up) are very good. The new songs are kind of like a cross between the recent 60's-inspired stuff and the Brief History sound.

dlp9001, Sunday, 7 November 2004 02:15 (nineteen years ago) link

i think the parts on precollection don't fit together as well as they have in the past but i like the oddness of a lot of the choruses and the acoustic guitar makes me think of xtc for some reason. 'will my lord be gardening' and 'squares' are as good as anything he's done before, i think the album will be a lost classic someday.

I like the old and new model Lilys, the only model I'm not fussed about is the 'lets be Neu!' model.
The reissue of Precollection is, like you said, a tough sell, personally I reckon it's because there is a fair amount to chew on melodically speaking.
I know that's mostly always been the case with Lilys' music but it's harder to take when not wrapped in the mid-sixties style production and arrangements (the same goes for Of Montreal who are all over the shop structurally) but the new stuff gets better the more you listen. I think of how Mummer by XTC was impenetrable at first, now it's one of my favourites.

this is the first ive heard about lilys reissues. i was told last night they're performing at the upcoming PW "Top 100" party.

OK, it looks like Spin-Art is releasing the reissues, according to another page on Insound. I've put an email in to the Spin-Art people to get more details.

I agree the production on Precollection foils some of the otherwise-would-have-been-great songs.

The Lilys bootleg page has a section at the bottom listing various live videos. Anybody know how to get hands on those?

eight years pass...

Wish this would finally happen someday. Talking of course about the records in the OP...

Here's looking at you Numero or Captured Tracks... somebody will take this on eventually right?

is there any lilys currently in print?

I don't think so, no.

http://www.frontierrecords.com/site/frontier-records-to-release-long-out-of-print-lilys-lp-eccsame-the-photon-band/

"LILYS’ etheric second full-length album, Eccsame The Photon Band, has become a shoegaze collector’s favorite. Out of print for twenty years, the highly sought-after, rare first-edition vinyl is nearly impossible to come by. This 21st anniversary re-release includes original artwork and has an enhanced dynamic range with the re-ordering of songs. “The Hermit Crab” has been moved and now begins side two, allowing for a deeper cut of side one and therefore increased audio fidelity, creating a more exciting listening experience than previously available. Eccsame The Photon Band has been described as “one of the LILYS‘ best,” “a hallucinatory revelation” and “a masterpiece of mood, atmosphere and production.”"

good news and totally gift-horsing but it's a bit weird to be extolling the virtues of a deeper cut when it's still a 51 minute album on one LP

linee, Thursday, 15 October 2015 18:23 (eight years ago) link

I love this record but it'd be much improved if they removed the stupid incidental tracks

MaresNest, Thursday, 15 October 2015 18:24 (eight years ago) link

You don't love pees?

Evan, Thursday, 15 October 2015 18:29 (eight years ago) link

Saw them this past Sunday. The show was AMAZING.

Evan, Thursday, 15 October 2015 18:30 (eight years ago) link

XP - Nah I always skip, it spoils the funny, faraway mood of the record.

MaresNest, Thursday, 15 October 2015 18:31 (eight years ago) link

awesome! I wonder when the ILD release will be available since the pre-order disc with magic healing powers has already sold out...

Sufjan Grafton, Thursday, 15 October 2015 18:36 (eight years ago) link

Wow I glazed over the bit about them reordering tracks. That's going to really screw with me.

Can anyone provide any insight- this is bothering me immensely. Is the "Ice caps melting" song called Radiotricity or Kodiak? I have the CD, and Radiotricity is the song, while Kodiak (Reprise) is a prior interlude track featuring a sad little horn line and guitar. Discogs corroborates this.

However, the upload on youtube calls the song "Kodiak". No big deal, right? Well, a photo of the band's on-stage set list also shows it labelled Kodiak. I just want to know what's what.

Here's the photo: https://instagram.com/p/8pdnWozEY3/embed/?v=5

Evan, Thursday, 15 October 2015 18:38 (eight years ago) link

actually yeah, looking at the album - the skit tracks and the 90s standard-issue-CD-silence add up to 10 minutes of that time

i guess if they're going to keep that sleeve image, warts n all...

Hmm, I got my download today. Assuming the record is shipping soon. I ordered it directly from the label.

Evan, Friday, 30 October 2015 19:24 (eight years ago) link

yeah, it says it's coming wednesday now instead of today on amazon. It might just be an amazon thing. I just hope it comes, since it appears to have sold out in pre-order.

Man, it took me a while but that Eccsame reissue sounds so good, it's really brought into focus how amazing the record is.
