I want a Chavez t-shirt

Why didn't I buy stuff like that when it was available? (Answer: I had no money then, and I spent it on CDs.)

But how drop-dead awesome would it be to walk down the street in 2004 with a shirt on that says "CHAVEZ - PENTAGRAM RING"? You can bet I'd pay for that NOW! I'd even settle for something that says Railroad Jerk... (I guess...)

(Did Run On have shirts? Man, if I could slip on a black tee with the cover of the "On/Off" EP on the front...)

I got a Chavez sticker on my turntable. Did you get one of those? It's all sparkly.

Appropos of nothing, one of my prized possessions is a Labradford t-shirt from the A Stable Reference nationwide tour juggernaut. "We come into your town, we make some low rumbling and twanging noises, and then we tidy up the dressing room before going back to the hotel to read." Awwwriiiiiight!

i second the make your own t-shirt suggestion. i have tons of shirts ive stenciled myself. spraypaint makes wonderful things.

i wonder if there's money in them thar gold hills. and by "gold hills," i mean finding old indie rock t-shirts, copying their design and selling them to a whole new generation of kids.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 14:52 (twenty years ago) link

Chavez are opening for GBV in December. Maybe they will sell t-shirts at that show.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:05 (twenty years ago) link

MP: details? Where is this show? Is Chavez only playing one gig, like that tribute thing they did a few months ago, or will they be touring? Seriously, a Chavez reunion would mean more to me than the Pixies reunion.

ah yes, maybe i'm thinking Silkworm

kephm, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:14 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, they played that one show in NYC and I live in Chicago and it wasn't feasible to get over there.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:15 (twenty years ago) link

Silkworm hasn't toured yet, but they're playing a few shows at the beginning of November, including one here in Chicago. I am excited, I've never seen them live.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:15 (twenty years ago) link

They are playing a reunion show opening up for Guided By Voices in NYC. I'm going to the show, and I'm very excited - I've seen Chavez once before, and they were great (though they had to end the set early, and didn't play "Unreal Is Here.")

I was walking down Hollywood last weekend and saw a young (like 12) girl in a Polvo "Exploded Drawing" T-Shirt, walking with her parents. She was with her parents. At first I thought it would be too creepy to stop her, but I decided at the last second I had to.

Me: "That's such a cool shirt - can I ask where you got it?"
Girl: "Oh, I think it was my brother's."
Me: "Oh, I see."
Girl: "Wait, what is it? What does this mean?"
Me: "Oh, it's a band."
Girl's Dad: "Ha! We never really knew! I think she just likes the colors. Now we know!"

Anyway, yeah - I would love a Polvo "Exploded Drawing" shirt.

I didn't realize it was so massively uncool to have music related clothing for babies though. I guess I can't let our kid wear his Rock N Roll Preschool Ramones onesie we were given.

Someone buy him a copy of Rembradnt Pussyhorse and tell him that it's just fine to say "Psychic, Powerless..." unless you're trying to impress the NY Times with your edginess...

six months pass...

just booked for pitchfork fest this summer, gonna have to try and go. was saying on chicago thread this is pretty much the first '90s band reunion i've been excited about but they haven't been playing in the midwest at all so i am pretty pumped for this.

chavez were selling tshirts friday night at the bowery ballroom. they were great. played one new song that had a little bit of choogle in it.

one month passes...

more detailed follow-up from pitchfork fest for the chavez fans:
* i had no idea matt sweeney played without a pick, or that his teeth were so messed up
* james lo is still a fucking monster drummer
* sounded really really good, their bass player muffed a few notes but they took it in stride
* apparently this was one of the smallest crowds for any of the pfork fest sets :( i couldn't tell because i was way up front, behind only some teenagers camping out for beach house
* i was so happy and so were a bunch of other 30/40-something dudes up front singing along. if they had played "relaxed fit" i woulda died

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 20:19 (twelve years ago) link

i never knew the bass player was gary marshall's son

mizzell, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 20:40 (twelve years ago) link

what? me neither ... is that true?

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 20:54 (twelve years ago) link

I didn't either. The link for Scott Marshall from Chavez's wikipedia page goes to Scott Marshall the director's page, but that one doesn't mention Chavez at all.

Oh wait, yeah it does, one sentence buried at the end:

Marshall also played bass guitar in the 90s indie rock band Chavez.[citation needed]

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 20:58 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, Gary Marshall is mentioned a bunch in the liner notes to that double disc reissue thing Matador put out a couple of years ago.

I was wearing my Grifters T shirt whilst tending to my pesty Leylandi earlier this evening.

Do I win a prize?

I remember seeing Chavez supporting GBV at Sheff Leadmill last month (or was it last century) Great band.

Then there's that band from Lussanne , Switzerland that aren't to dissimilar in form or name. It's doing my head in and i'm too pissed to google

Jessie Fer Ark (Mobbed Up Ping Pong Psychos), Thursday, 19 July 2012 00:05 (twelve years ago) link

thanking u for the notes. i had no idea sweeney played without a pick and as a lifelong failed chavez guitar transcriber that's kind of a mindfuck.

also, it really doesn't get any better than james lo.

aaaahaha i also had no idea about the garry/scott marshall connection; they totally look alike too!
