howdy y'all, if you live in NYC, read on:

this week has been crazy - have had awesome shows all over the place. Thanks to the multitudes that came out last night to the Hook to see the Moldy Peaches - and thanks to the many who came out to Tommy's last night and saw, among other great folks, Princess and the Wives. That show was so awesome. Princess & Wives both ruled. If you missed 'em -you have one more chance at these awesome shows this weekend:

2NITE 10/15 @ THE CAVE -> USAISAMONSTER, Wives, OVO, White Mice

SAT 10/16 @ TOMMY'S -> Mirah, Tara Jane O'Neal, Liarbird / Lyrebird

SUN 10/17 @ TOMMY'S -> Bellmer Dolls, Lion Fever, the Fugue, Princess

here're the details...

TONIGHT Friday 10/15 @ THE CAVE

~~~~ WIVES
~~~~~~~~ OVO (from Italy)

@ THE CAVE -> just over the bridge from Bklyn, 1 stop from Mnhttn!
10-93 Jackson Ave @ 11th St | LIC, Queens | STIFF DRINKS | ALL AGES
G to 21st/VanAlst OR 7 to Vernon/Jackson | 8pm | $5 | 718.706.8783

USAISAMONSTER are unbelievable awesomeness - yeah, in the Lightning Bolt vein but with Southern charm and great spazzed out Zeppelinized prog punk chops - induces sweat and involuntary swaying. "the USAISAMONSTER is a brilliantly fried two-piece guitar and drums band of sun spotters hailing from Brooklyn, NY. The band has roved the planet with instruments strapped to their backs playing the tops of mountains, skin-melting deserts, and rusted out America." - Load Records "Crawling out of the same petri dish that’s spawned put-on-a-helmet-and-drool-bucket rock like Lightning Bolt, Usaisamonster’s multi-clawed attack chomps you with prog, punk, Sabbath/Zeppelin riffs, and spaz-thrash." - Village Voice. Sweaty & trancendent.
-- MP3s -->

L.A. trio coming out of the Smell universe, "a la Big Black, Black Flag, Men’s Recovery Project, et al, WIVES are bastard fury and volume … hyper-intelligent and incredibly impatient - Wives delivers the intense, bombastic rhythms alongside discordant noise guitar frenzy - pierced through with vehement shouted and spoken narrative." - Sam James Velde. Slow sometimes, then fast, real fucking loud. Long mike cables mean they’re gonna be out in audience. A lot. Wives recently toured with Gibby Haynes from the Butthole Surfers (no shit, he still exists.) New record out on Cold Sweat Records.

[ OVO ] ... from Italy
"Ovo consists of Bruno Dorella (drummer for the infamous Italian post-punk band Wolfango, guitarist for the surf-folk group Ronin, studio drummer for Bugo who's known as the "Italian Beck", and head of the Bar La Muerte record label), and Stephania Pedretti (founder of the all-female French/Italian improv/no-wave combo Allun). Their music ranges from droning post-punk to spastic no-wave to free-jazz improvisation to noise to beautiful soundforms." -
-- MP3 -->

furry costumed Providencers - describes the Mice thusly: "Delving into the satanic mud of White Mice’s music is a crawling king snake of visuals from the gutters of Providence’s mills falling into the murk or the rivers and aqueducts in and under the city. Of course the closing bong hit is at the apex of the movie. Will McKraken worked up some deal with the horned one for this great montage."

TOMORROW Sat 10/16 @ TOMMY'S TAVERN -> aLL aGeS show!!!!

~~ MIRAH (K Records)
~~~~ TARA JANE O’NEAL (x Rodan / Retsin / Sonora Pine)
~~~~~~~~ FARE WELL (Ginger Brooks Takashi, Nikki & friends)

1041 Manhattan Ave @ Freeman St | Greenpoint, Brooklyn | ALL AGES
G train to Greenpoint Ave | doors 8pm | $7 | 718.383.9699 | cheap beer

Mirah is Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn playing and singing with her sultry sultry voice over guitar and sometimes drum machines. Mirah is a frequent co-collaborator with Phil Elverum from the Microphones / Mount Eerie. "Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn proves that the sound of laying one's nerves bare need not come smothered in saccharine to make its mark. Though she works within the often cloying confessional singer/songwriter idiom, the former Microphone's innate musical gifts and flair for experimentation place her garage-folk in a class by itself. Mirah's disarming, unaffected (and unfathomably sexy) singing is wrapped in churning feedback, lo-fi electronics, ukuleles, and wildly distorted drums; however, the arrangements are rarely bloated by artistic indulgence — it's all in the service of her songs, whose sweet, simple melodies enfold childlike musings on love and sex." - Flavorpill

Tara Jane O'Neal played in the now almost mythical Rodan back in the day, formed the Sonora Pine, plus put out a number of great records with Cynthia Lynn Nelson as Retsin. She also played in the King Cobra (with Rachel Carns from the Need / Kicking Giant) for awhile until recently. Tara Jane sings with a voice like no other, strident but spare - a slow delibrate burn to Mirah's hot heat - songs that explore dark and sometimes whimsical but abstractly personal places. Tara Jane has three full length solo records out to date, mostly on Quarterstick / Touch and Go records. "Tara Jane O'Neil opens tonight with a set of impressionistic folksongs-cum-sound poems." - Flavorpill
-- MP3 Stream -->

Lyrebird aka Liarbird is an Olympia, WA collaboration between Kanako Wynkoop and various co-conspirators, folks like Heather Dunn (Tiger Trap, No-No's, Dub Narcotic, Steeplechasers, etc) Nora Danielson (the Intima), Mathew Anderson, etc. Kanako also played in LLP and Space Ballerinas.
-- MP3 --> [click on "AUDIO"]

[ FARE WELL ] ... aka Ginger Brooks Takashi, Nikki & friends
new band from LTTR editor Ginger Brooks Takashi, Ginger also recorded a record with Mirah and other friends recently, "Songs from the Black Mountain Music Project," a collection of songs recorded during a month Ginger and Mirah spent in the mountains of North Carolina.

~~ and roundin' it out... the Puttin' on the Ritzes

three piece Brooklynites, Peter Mavro (x Angels of Light, Vanity Set, Tav Falco), Anthony Malat (x Love Life, Universal Order of Armageddon, the Great Unravelling), and Daniel Sheerin (x 30 Seconds Over Tokyo, the Enditalls). Dark, dissonant coctail blues.
-- MP3 -->

More dark blues from Westcoast bluesgothpunk royalty - folks from the VSS, Silentist, and Lost Kids. Worshippers of the Birthday Party, all. "In the summer of 2002, David Clifford, who played drums for Pleasure Forever, and before that, the VSS, Slaves, and Jim Sclavounous and the Vanity Set, approached Jen Pearl, formerly of the Lost Kids, about forming a band together. The pair drafted Kevin Garrison to play drums, Clifford took on the bass duties and the newly christened Lion Fever began crafting a style invoking blues, '60s garage, punkabilly and other darkly powerful styles, with artists like Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, and the Gun Club among the band's chief influences. Their debut EP Lustre, was released by Dim Mak in early 2004." ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide
-- MP3 -->

"Chicago dance super noise weirdness" sez Brendan Fowler. "Princess is a two man band with a hundred piece sound. Using guitars, keyboards, drums, banjo, and various thrift-store noise-makers, Princess prattles through battles between party politic cliques from hip hop to art rock crits bits and bits of foggy mountain violet satin water fountains. Princess willfully pushes musical contradiction and confusion to its elegant limits." - Centerstage Chicago
– MP3 –>

it ain't Taco. Big BJ Rubin (x Ferrari Testarossa) & Kevin The Shea (x Storm & Stress) play the standards. Sometimes dudes take their shirts off, be warned. drums and vocals and that's it.

This punctuation is giving me PTSD. Also, weird timing as I was listening to mix CD I made in November 2004 with a Wives song on it just last night.
