is what im looking for. because raiders of the lost arp 4 used similar instrumentation (probably... arps?) and it maed me all nostalgic. so. who were the makers of the sonic soundtrack inspired by, and who was inspired by them?

realaudio samples here. avoid the midis.

One of the songs by my band ('Starlite Ballroom') was kind of influenced by a Sonic The Hedgehog level. You can hear it at http://www.chemistryexperiment.co.uk/records/listen.html but I think it's been so smothered in other ideas that it's difficult to see the connection.

Can't think of anything else at the moment.

there's a whole genre of people making 16-bit video game music

Avi (Avi), Thursday, 14 October 2004 13:47 (sixteen years ago) link

yes yes but nothing of that stuff sounds quite like the themes from spring yard zone and starlihgt zone. its not about the cheesiness of 16bit sounchips. those themes are sort of old school, and what id like to know is what school that is.

That song "Alone, together" on the Strokes first album sounds like the music on Level 2. Marble Gardens? Whatever. That song makes me feel sick it sounds so bad.

John Cei Douglas (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 14 October 2004 14:21 (sixteen years ago) link

i just pulled out sonic 2 the other day, and realized, as happens a great deal in these situations, how quickly and completely i could recall the entire musical score. these things seem to have had a pretty big developmental impact for me - one of the only other things that resonates so clearly and deeply is the set of cards for the game Memory, and all the patterns - theyre like mini-mandalas for me when i look back at them. but i digress. even though video-game music may have some profound effect on me, i still maintain that nintendo-core is a pretty lame idea. especially the name.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:32 (sixteen years ago) link

The guy who wrote the soundtrack for the first Sonic is named Spencer Nilsen, and he teaches recording and audio classes at Ex'pression Center for New Media, near San Francisco. I was taking some classes there for a while and met him. He's a really nice guy, but I don't think the soundtrack for that game is very good. If you ask me, it's not even in the same league as Contra or Super Mario Brothers.

Oh yes it is (I would say)
Starlight Zone is brilliant!

(but I'm probably blinded by nostalgia)

Ludo (Ludo), Thursday, 14 October 2004 18:44 (sixteen years ago) link

there was one level i believe in sonic 2 that reminded me of new order's 'age of consent.' it was a level that was grassy and outdoors, i cannot for the life of me remember the name. but the rhythm was exactly the same as the bass line to that NO song.

Old Skool classic "Compnded 1" (by Gordon Edge) has a synth line that sounds like it's straight out of a computer game. It's brilliant.

Wooden (Wooden), Friday, 15 October 2004 13:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Ah, Spring Yard Zone brings back some memories. Actually I don't think it was one of my favorite pieces from the game, but some of the other stages are great. I'm thinking the underground one and the casino level.

do you know his katakis soundtrack? its very similar in part to rubicon and disco lunar modules.

:|, Friday, 15 October 2004 14:16 (sixteen years ago) link

was Gordon Edge his real name? i love that track, Katakis i'm sure i downloaded mp3s for ages ago but can't remember how it goes. i think Huelsbeck has made proper non-game recordings available to buy.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 15 October 2004 14:32 (sixteen years ago) link

I have no idea whether Gordon Edge was his real name. I'd imagine not.

i think the song "white hotel" by dmx crew is pretty much entirely a lift of some lvl or other of some sonic game...

meenieminey, Friday, 15 October 2004 22:16 (sixteen years ago) link

Everytime I play "Elaine" by Abba formy brother he says "HOLY SHIT IT'S SONIC THE HEDGEHOG" IT'S VERY FUNNY

Sonny, Ah!!1 (Sonny A.), Friday, 15 October 2004 22:18 (sixteen years ago) link

"Together Again" by Janet Jackson sounds like one of the levels in the first Sonic the Hedgehog game where you have to walk along a wall outside and jump over some water/bridges I think (haven't played it for about eight years though).

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 15 October 2004 22:34 (sixteen years ago) link

Weird, I was thinking of starting this thread a couple weeks ago. One song I was thinking of was Alexander Robotnick's "Problemes d'Amour" which I think would match the 2nd level of Sonic 2 very well. The other one was Outkast's "I'll Call Before I Come" (well, an instrumental version at least), which doesn't remind me of any particular Sonic theme but that rubbery synth-bassline could easily score one of his adventures.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Friday, 15 October 2004 22:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Actually, come to think of it, lots of italo-disco could be used as Sonic the Hedgehog music.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Friday, 15 October 2004 22:40 (sixteen years ago) link

haven't heard it, but it may not be an accident, as the main baddie in sonic is Dr. Robotnik...

meenieminey, Friday, 15 October 2004 22:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, I fucking hope that is not a coincidence.

very true. kasso: walkman could definitely be the soundtrack of a rather relaxed sonic level.

Every now and then I hear some 80s pop/R&B production and basically think it sounds just like Sonic music, which mainly I guess means the Sonic people were listening to that stuff. I can't hear "My Prerogative" and not think of one of the songs from Sonic 2 - maybe the Casino zone or the cave one? A lot of "Thriller" and "True Blue" have this effect on me as well.

"We Major" & "Celebration" by Kanye West sound ridiculously liek Sonic the Hedgehog ta me. it's all I can really think of when they're playing. the music is so shiny/swooshy orchestral style.

That's the first level theme from the first Turrican game being covered there... the best music of all the Turrican games has to be the music on Turrican II for the Amiga, which was some of Chris Huelsbeck's best-ever, in my opinion!

Ah, that's great to hear! Is he still doing chip-tunes? I know he's put out a couple of CD's, but I don't know if it's of his computer music, or non-computer music, or what... will have to investigate further!

Savaged Regime - Angel Island: Past, Present & Future EP

https://savagedregime.bandcamp.com/releases

It's just four different takes on the Angel Island music from Sonic 3, but they're transformative enough that this might as well be an original EP. The Good Future version is astounding, they pretty much turned the song into Pacific State by 808 State.
