...called 'The Grind Date'

That came out of nowhere, seemingly. Anyone heard it yet? Views?

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:09 (twenty years ago) link

is it boring or crap like the last 2 or 3 have been?

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:12 (twenty years ago) link

"Shopping Bags," the single (video on launch) is terrific. I'd buy it today if I wasn't trying to save cash. Glass bottle percussion.

Personally I think their last two albums have been really strong. Less sample-rific insanity but strong, intelligent-yet-fun tracks (nowhere as much filler). I'm really looking forward to it.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:13 (twenty years ago) link

the need a good producer though.

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:16 (twenty years ago) link

the Metro review mentions Madlib

yeah, I liked the AOI albums too

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:17 (twenty years ago) link

I'll admit I wouldn't mind Prince Paul to drop in ("More Than U Know" on A Prince Among Thieves might be my fave De La track ever - surprised Puffy hasn't stolen the beat wholesale), but the beats are good if not attention-grabbing.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:19 (twenty years ago) link

i dont know, the beats have been merely functional ever since stakes is high to me. and even that album saw them starting to falter. the first three are more or less immaculate to me, but since buhloone, ive only really liked odd songs on their albums. they need one person in the producers chair, and they need someone daring and good, not someone safe and MOR.

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:22 (twenty years ago) link

Tom Breihan has a great review of "Shopping Bags" up at Pitchfork (I might be able to stop looking at that site if it wasn't for his arrival, gosh darn it).

The track is produced by Madlib. Check it out!

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:53 (twenty years ago) link

if they work with mf doom on it, i might buy it.

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:55 (twenty years ago) link

where's the long-promised AOI pt 3 then?

piscesboy, Monday, 4 October 2004 17:10 (twenty years ago) link

I think the last album's "Tryin' People" might be my favorite since "Eye Know," and I'm still looking for a song on the new one as good, but it's pleasure doing it...

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 19:23 (twenty years ago) link

This is NOT "aoi 3" then?
Seconded on "tryin' people". If they'd just have cut it a bit more intelligently.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 19:50 (twenty years ago) link

GHOSTFACE IS ON THIS. WTF.

GOOD BEATS, THEIR RAPS ARE GETTING REALLY BAD THO.

DEEBZ (ddb), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 20:21 (twenty years ago) link

AOI series died when they got dropped by Tommy Boy.

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 07:15 (twenty years ago) link

Ghostface appears to be on almost everything these days.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 09:31 (twenty years ago) link

haha they sample Tales From Topographic Oceans on this one, so obviously it's going to get a free pass from me. That said, on the basis of one listen I thought it was pretty good. Not as outright pop as (the superb) Bionix, but they're still sampling and looping glittery pop tunes on many of the tracks.

The highlight for me on first listen was the European bonus track featuring Sean Paul. Basically they chop "Genius of Love" into tiny pieces and reassemble it at random and then put a Coolie Dance-type rhythm underneath. Works really well.

The Ghostface track sounds a lot like the stuff on Pretty Toney: De La made him feel right at home by drenching the track with some old classic soul thing.

Oh and splooge, I don't know if your last grumpy post was a knowing one, but in fact they DO collaborate MF Doom on one track.

Jeff W (zebedee), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 09:51 (twenty years ago) link

i think being grumpy in a de la post is okay cos posdunos is one of the grumpiest men in rap. but im glad they collaborate with Doom, it must be great.

splooge (thesplooge), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 09:55 (twenty years ago) link

TRYIN PEOPLE = ace, but that faked ansafone message that precedes it...wtf?

piscesboy, Wednesday, 6 October 2004 10:36 (twenty years ago) link

OTM pisces boy.

splooge (thesplooge), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 10:42 (twenty years ago) link

this album kills the AOIs. it's really good. doom is on it, madlib prod, jay dee prod, holler!

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 10:51 (twenty years ago) link

I'd imagine that Ghost was invited onto the record as a last minute amicable solution to them both sampling the same loop on their respective albums.

De La Soul should never be working with someone as disingenuous as Madlib. Check the track with Prince Paul on the new Handsome Boy Modelling School album to see the chemistry they've still got with Prince Paul.

Pikmin, Wednesday, 6 October 2004 10:54 (twenty years ago) link

madlib = disingenuous?

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 10:55 (twenty years ago) link

madlib = hit and (very) miss.

splooge (thesplooge), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 10:56 (twenty years ago) link

*kills* AOI pt 2? that's a bold claim.

i had one of my run-to-the-counter-after-first-listen-on-the-listening-post experiences after hearing 'simply' at xmas 2001.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 6 October 2004 10:58 (twenty years ago) link

well, trying people is still one of thei greatets songs ever. but the rest of that album is easily forgettable. those preacher skits? c'mon.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 11:01 (twenty years ago) link

argh. THEIR GREATEST. obv.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 11:01 (twenty years ago) link

Come on, go listen to Quasimoto or the Lootpack album then listen to what Madlib's produced in the last few years - he's pathetic now.

Pikmin, Wednesday, 6 October 2004 11:09 (twenty years ago) link

ok, listen to sickfit on madvilliany and tell me that track is pathetic.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 13:49 (twenty years ago) link

Piscesboy: I edited my copy so that I never have to hear that again... plus the dumb "Prince 'Gold Album'" ending.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 7 October 2004 00:27 (twenty years ago) link

I've always thought Supa Dave West's production on Bionix was the aceness - the first three tracks represent a dream run of sugary sweetness, esp. "Simply".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 7 October 2004 02:10 (twenty years ago) link

Madlib's beats are still kickass as ever, I think the largest difference between now & Quasimoto era can be summed up in one word: patience. Which he has now.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:50 (twenty years ago) link

Is the Sean Paul track on the new album "Shoomp" or something else?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:51 (twenty years ago) link

I wouldn't think him a particularly appropriate producer to work with De La though, as I think they are best complimented by someone with a more traditional/less stonerly approach (aka PAUL).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:51 (twenty years ago) link

"Simply" on AOI 2 DESTORYS. BUT OVERALL THE AOI SERIES SUCKED BALLS. ESP AOI 1. PAINFUL. GHOSTWEED OR WHATEVER, FUCK THAT.

AND THE PREACHER STUFF on II IS HELLS GAY.

MADLIB IS THE GUIDED BY VOICES OF RAP. HE NEEDS TO CHILL, BUT HE STILL DELIVERS HOTNESS.

DEEBZ (ddb), Thursday, 7 October 2004 14:36 (twenty years ago) link

"Hells gay"?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 7 October 2004 14:41 (twenty years ago) link

Tuomas do you want to talk about de la or start trouble?

DEEBZ (ddb), Thursday, 7 October 2004 14:43 (twenty years ago) link

"Come On Down" featuring FLAVA FLAV is pretty RAD if only for Flava...the beat is WACK.

DEEBZ (ddb), Thursday, 7 October 2004 14:45 (twenty years ago) link

haha they sample Tales From Topographic Oceans on this one, so obviously it's going to get a free pass from me.

"Verbal Clap" starts off with a sample from Rick Wakeman's Six Wives Of Henry VIII !! ZOINKS! My jaw dropped.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 7 October 2004 18:35 (twenty years ago) link

And the title track DOES have a Topgraphic sample !! wtf, indeed.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 7 October 2004 18:38 (twenty years ago) link

I don't have the store-bought copy in my hands, but is "Shoomp" even on there? Might have got left off.

Here's Dave's "journal" at the Spitkicker message board. Tour underway.

Tim F asked: Is the Sean Paul track on the new album "Shoomp"?
Yes

Pete sez: I don't have the store-bought copy in my hands, but is "Shoomp" even on there? Might have got left off.
Like I said above, "Shoomp" is the European only bonus track.

"I'd imagine that Ghost was invited onto the record as a last minute amicable solution to them both sampling the same loop on their respective albums."

That's seems unlikely at best

I think it's pretty obvious that De La, or their label, never paid Ghostface for the guest spot, so he took the beat, his verse, and released it as white label. Notice how it's the exact same beat, and the exact same lyrics. Except the intro, where he says, in part:

"Niggas just should've pay'd me my stacks, these niggas sending me tracks and they tryin' not to pay the kid....This is what happens when niggas send me shit and pay me my fuckin' money! PRETTY TONEY SHOULDA GOT HIS DOUGH.."

Therehegoes, Friday, 15 October 2004 16:10 (nineteen years ago) link

I love this album. I might like Bionix more though. I like individual tracks on earlier albums but frankly I find most of them way too filler happy. This thing has TWELVE tracks. god bless.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 15 October 2004 16:16 (nineteen years ago) link

should read - "and DON'T pay me my fuckin' money!" - naturally

Therehegoes, Friday, 15 October 2004 16:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Now that I've heard the title cut, I will HAVE to go get this.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 23:11 (nineteen years ago) link

They put on one surprise throwdown of a show last night. During "Rock Co. Kane Flow" (which is incidentally my favorite track on the album and one of my favorite tracks of the year) somebody THREW UP ON ME. And I didn't really seem to mind that much.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 22 October 2004 11:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Just bought this. Will report back.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:44 (nineteen years ago) link

This record is really very strong innit. Nothing better than when veterans nonchalantly drop solid records decades into their careers.
