FT's second birthday is a month today, and as I did last year I'll put a little overview and links page together with what contributors and readers feel are the year's best pieces. Blog entries and reviews are entirely acceptable, too - whatever (if anything!) stands out for you. Anything from the end of last March to now is valid.

DON'T RESPOND HERE - E-Mail me your picks, please! I'm just using this as a noticeboard. Because I can.

The anniversary will also be marked by a SPECIAL NYLPM FEATURE and by a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT. Ooh, the anticipation!

five months pass...
I had an kewl idea for a thread, and I'm gunna put it *HERE* (because I can): why not list your all-time favourite five ILM threads, WITH LINKS!! That will put the revenant undead cat among the merely topical chatter-pigeons (cat = plural here, obv.)

I was going to do this for ILM's first birthday which is a mere fortnight away :)

Tom, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

K-Blimey!! (As NoRMaN wd say...)

It's gunna take me abt two weeks to read thru and find and decide anyway.

two favorites:

rap vs. rock, because it's neuromancer at his most ridiculous and everyone, even pinefox (!), was defending rap, and i had to the good sense to mostly stay out of it.

blur vs. gorillaz, for obvious reasons. plus, the original question is awesome to begin with.

more later.

ethan, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

ethan: i thought u were complaining about how horrible people were on the blur vs. gorrliaz thread because people were just agreeing with tom and putting them down 4 no reason. u change yr mind now?

last time i checked the archives, it looked like some great articles from ft past were missing, e.g. fred on the smiths, the art of the love song (maybe my all-time favourite ft article), otis on john fahey. couldn't even find the best-of-the-90s lists.

Search and Destroy: The Barenaked Ladies coz we ganged up on Canada. Also, DOES ANYONE IN THIS BITCH LIKE FORMALISM, although only back when the thread had that tile.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

If it still exists somewhere, can we have the infamous Poptones thread back please? Even as just a text file or something?

DG, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Archives - I have been neglectful of the site lately but only this very morning in the bath I thought THIS MUST CHANGE and stuff will return repurposed.

The Poptones thread can be put up on the freakytrigger site if anyone wants.

Tom, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Absolutely, in the interests of science and history. Plus for when the Grate Doomintroid Experi-Novel abt "him vs us" appears, and the tabloids come a-callin'. Plus we may all be called to give evidence at the divorce trial.

mark s, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

NB this is dependent on me actually having the poptones thread - e- mail adress is below, as ever, if anyone can send...?

Tom, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh yeah also - OI SINKER! HISTORY OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC! NOT HISTORY OF ILM! Thank yew.

Tom, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

VERY kind. I had not yet woken up of course. DP is writing the history of ILM: it wd be quite discourteous to work on a spoiler. And now I wake *up* [vanishes]

Taking Sides: Madonna vs. Janet Jackson. I mean, obviously.

Thread with least-fulfilled potential: ILM Tape Trading Club which had real promise as a revealing glance at certain ILMers' own personal "bargain bins". (I am listening to pre-copyright-hooha "All Eyez on Me" right now ackshully, procured via that thread).

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I was not 'defending rap' on that thread. I have just looked and checked. I have never 'defended rap' in my life.

the pinefox, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Nor did Ethan "stay out of it". Don't worry, pinefox, we all know you'd never do such a thing. It was fabrication.

Anyhow, that Janet Madonna thread is the best thing I've ever read in my entire life. I mean, Janet sucks ass but it's great that one guy is like so dedicated to her cause.

Ally, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

pinefox: neuromancer said, rap is bad because they have to make every line rhyme. and you said, well, almost all lyrical music is like that, and therefore you defused his criticism of rap. that might be hard for you to live with, but it happened.

ally: i said i MOSTLY stayed out of it. meaning i did not hardly get into arguing as i could have. go back and see how many posts i made compared to, say, YOU.

ethan, Friday, 10 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

*rolls eyes* I don't suppose it's worth pointing out that virtually every single post I made on that pointless thread was in response to your inane and overblown ranting (ie your intense need to feed the troll), right? Ethan, you are a silly, irritating boy and I shall have nothing to do with you any further. You should be glad I say it to your face instead of a few other people I could name, because maybe it'll calm you down a bit. The rock versus rap thread was easily the stupidest thing I ever read, and it was because of your posts, not neuro's flamebaiting.

But I still nominate it for best thread ever.

Ally, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

um, ally, perhaps i did not make this clear enough before. i posted three times to rap vs. rock. the first one was before neuro showed up. the second was because tom told me to post that krs-one = churchill. the third was because someone compared rap to queercore and i said 'taking sides: rap vs. queercore'. those were all of my posts, none of which you responded to and none of which 'fed the troll'. next time you should probably read the thread you're talking about before the namecalling and stuff. thanks.

twenty-two years pass...

I've written a (quite lengthy!) farewell to the pop polls - why I did them, why I kept doing them, what I'm proud of, and the ways they worked best. And some thanks to all you lot too.https://t.co/cfh9TpQHQ6
