I've been obsessing a little lately over Maggot Brain, the song.

Who else has created songs like this?

blue cheer - "out of focus", "sun cycle"

Praxis' "After Shock (Chaos Never Died)", a long, drawn-out-as-can-be, uber-heavy duet piece with Bernie Worrell on organ and AF Next Man Flip dropping samples/sound fx off of Transmutation: Mutatis Mutandis.

now go answer my psychedlic country thread and make that one messy

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Sonny Sharrock (Ask the Ages, his playing on Sanders' Tauhid). James 'Blood' Ulmer (Tales of Captain Black, Freelancing, and Revealing for the 70s free funk stuff, Memphis Blood for more recent Chicago blues stuff). I'm assuming you already have everything Hendrix touched. A good live recording of Buddy Guy where he shreds out the feedback (I just have one of these, mind you). Miles Davis - A Tribute to Jack Johnson maybe. Led Zeppelin - "The Lemon Song"?

Oh, I just checked the B. A. R. thread. Looks like all of this stuff is in there.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

But what about the G.A.R. thread?

"Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts" on Funkadelic's Standing on the Verge of Getting It On
All of Funkadelic's self-titled album, esp. "What Is Soul," "Mommy, What's a Funkadelic?"
All of Parliament's album Osmium
I have an import of Eddie Hazel's Rest in P comp, which pretty much just shows how nimble and perfect a guitar player he could be.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Osmium! Totally! That's such a good album to bust out on people who think of Parliament as the pop side of P-Funk.

OMG N4t3 it is soooooooo good to see you posting! And shit yeah it is!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, have any of y'all heard Manuel Gottsching's album Inventions for Electric Guitar? The first track's last five minutes or so is definitely in the tripped-out/droney acid guitar camp, but with a really strong proto-electronic dance element.

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, what does Sharrock do on Jack Johnson? I thought it was all McLaughlin.

I can actually see where you're coming from with "Shine On . . ."

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll keep an eye out, Clarke. What do you think of Steven Mackey?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Sharrock's on the second side, the "Willie Nelson" stuff. For more, see the thread about JJ...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"Shine On..." is SO carefully, anally constructed and immaculate sounding, though -- it never breaks out of its shell. Sundar, isn't he a modern composer? Don't know much about his stuff...

Eddie Hazel's solo album

Named one of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time by both Rolling Stone and Mojo, Brooklyn native Eddie Hazel was the original lead guitarist for George Clinton's wildly influential funk-rock ensemble Funkadelic. After shredding on acid-soaked classics like "Maggot Brain" "I Wanna Know If It's Good To You," and "Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On," Hazel left the band in 1974 amid a flurry of drug use and financial disputes.

After the split with Funkadelic, Hazel played on sessions for The Temptations, contributing to their Norman Whitfield-inspired hit "Standin' On (Shakey Ground)," which signaled the vocal group's move from the Motown Sound to psychedelic soul. He then went to prison on a drug-related charge. When he returned, he reunited with Clinton and The Funk Mob to begin work on this, his first and only solo album.

Released in 1977, Games, Dames And Guitar Thangs is a full-tilt, jam-filled showcase for Hazel's far-out virtuosity. He cuts loose on fiery extended versions of The Mamas And The Papas' "California Dreamin'" and The Beatles' "I Want You (She's So Heavy)." Elsewhere he taps the Parliament/Funkadelic tradition with "Frantic Moment," "So Goes The Story," and "Physical Love" -- all co-written by Clinton and Bootsy Collins. Female PFunk backers the Brides Of Funkenstein handle the majority of vocal duties.

Hazel's hard living eventually caught up with him -- he died in 1992 of liver and kidney failure. Two years later, PFunk engineer Jim Callon assembled an EP entitled Jams From The Heart, which contained unreleased 1975 demo sessions. Featuring some of Hazel's most incendiary playing, the EP has been added to this Rhino Handmade edition in its entirety.

Games, Dames And Guitar Thangs is available as an individually numbered limited edition of 5,000 copies.

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Clarke: Yeah, he's head of composition at Princeton and also an electric guitar player. A younger guy who includes playing the musical accompaniment to his older brothers' acid trips among his seminal influences. I was thinking specifically about this piece, with electronic (prob dance-influenced) backdrop by Paul Lansky. It sort of fuses the anal with the acidic, if you will.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll listen to it soon, Sundar -- thanks. That's great about soundtracking his bro's trips!

You know, another track that's structurally similar if not similar in spirit/mood is "The Heavenly Music Corporation" (first track on Fripp/Eno's No Pussyfooting).

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I like that album. Do you know Tomorrow Knows Where You Live by Henry Kaiser and Jim O'Rourke? In a way, it's an updated but similar concept - well, I don't think JOR actually mixes HK live but it's similar in that there's avant-proggy guitar improv over ambient soundscapes. HK does some awesome intricate things. I think it's a pretty marvellous little album that doesn't get enough love.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

(I find the Mackey interesting because it tries to work within an ultra-glossy and studio-intensive production context. I'm sort of fascinated by 'overproduced noise'.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The first, self-titled Funkadelic album is also a must.

I wish I'd said that upthread. :]

ten years pass...

I've somehow gone 33 years knowing this song, and knowing that George Clinton mixed out most of the band performance from the LP version, without hearing that original band performance:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLhYXbYvo_I

In a million years would I have expected Bernie Worrell to be tinkling around on a celeste?!?

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 31 October 2023 17:35 (two years ago)

Much respect to George Clinton for those mix decisions, take out all the sloppy drums & percussion and leave the good parts and you get a classic. Really the only way to go.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Tuesday, 31 October 2023 21:30 (two years ago)

It is interesting to hear the original track.

To the original question, I would say "Watermelon in Easter Hay" by Frank Zappa has the similar feel as "Maggot Brain".

earlnash, Tuesday, 31 October 2023 21:52 (two years ago)

I once read a description somewhere of "Watermelon..." as "Maggot Brain" + the Isley's "Summer Breeze".

all these songs with extended guitar solos don't come close to the earth-shattering emotion of maggot brain tho

Well duh.

But a playlist of all these songs would be GRATE.

brimstead, Tuesday, 31 October 2023 23:21 (two years ago)

In a million years would I have expected Bernie Worrell to be tinkling around on a celeste?!?

I shouldn't have been so surprised, the celeste turns up elsewhere on Maggot Brain, on "Hit It and Quit It". Still sounds really misplaced on this version of the title track.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 3 November 2023 15:21 (two years ago)

John Frusciante's Before the Beginning is an obvious Maggot Brain homage.

Roy Buchanan “the messiah will come again” is as close as they come

Heez, Friday, 3 November 2023 16:25 (two years ago)

This one competes with "Maggot Brain" in the category of guitar solo that lifts the song to another level:

Now that people mention it the similarity is obvious but I will admit that when I saw people talking about how great the Maggot Brain needledrop was I was like whaaaat how did I miss that
