i wouldn't go quite so far as that, but i saw the musical in previews last week and liked it a lot. didn't reach the heights of my favorite rock musicals (most recent entry: "passing strange"), but it was genuinely moving. the opening punk-pop blast of the title song was very nearly startling. the arrangements are well done. one of the girl singers (blond who plays the wife of the guy who stays at home, has kids and is bored out of his skull) has a terrific rock voice. the onstage punk-rock chick keyboardist/conductor was a blast to watch.

anyway, here's something sort of interesting about green day's american idiot: add a shitload of harmonies and other little musical parts and pretty much all the songs on it sound like they were written for a traditional broadway musical.

so did Green Day ever have to pay Bryan Adams for that bit of Jesus in Suburbia that was a direct rip of "Summer of '69"?

Someone on an FB thread of "legacy ruining albums" mentioned American Idiot, but idk, this is their last great record. everything after has been shit. But it's got tracks. "Jesus of Suburbia" is still amazing. Boulevard of Broken Dreams was overplayed to an extent that I don't think I can ever hear it again without thinking of MTV/VH1 commercial bumpers, but i remember it being good at the time. the whole thing is great. still amazing that they pulled off a career renaissance when they did.

I've never been a Green Day fan and this album was no exception. However, if I notice that the weather is getting wet, I will sing to myself here comes the rain again/falling from the stars.

And when there's a USA election on, I think.. um..

was really disappointed with this album when it came out bc I wanted them to keep making the fake kinks songs they were writing on warning

(thesis: all kinks songs are fake kinks songs, this is the point of the kinks)

Revisited this for the first time in over a decade today, and
-Jesus of Suburbia is a 10/10 track
-Armstrong's vocals on the verses in whatsername are kind of amazing. he's not exactly a good singer but the pop-punk boyishness of his crooning sounds very sad and bittersweet. It covers up well the fact that the concept of the song is pretty dumb

It's still a great record, pretty much saved their bacon career-wise after the lacklustre Warning and wound up their old fanbase as a result.

Boulevard is still terrible, despite the projections.
