Total shit. The singer's got the weediest non-voice ever.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 9 September 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

they suck.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 9 September 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

replace h with s, there you go

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 9 September 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Crap voice, some EXTREMELY good tunes (though "Shining Light" really isn't one of them, Ivor Novello awards be damned, but.. "Angel Interceptor", "Kung Fu", "Oh Yeah", "Wild Surf", "A Life Less Ordinary", "Evil Eye" all great), first album good, second bad, third a bit rubbish but has the brilliant "Burn Baby Burn" on it, fourth much better than it has any right to be. I got hurt at a festival gig they did in 1996 back in my indie kid years, which actually counts as one of my better memories from that period of life.

That said, Charlotte Hatherley's "Kim Wilde" is better than nearly everything they've done as a band.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 9 September 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Dom Passantino to thread!

(I kinda like 'em)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 9 September 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to admit that I have only heard "Kung Fu", which I love - I gladly paid money for a cassette single of it back in the summer of 1996.

Is their other stuff as fun?

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Thursday, 9 September 2004 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i remember that "kung fu" was on the vhs tape for that jackie cahn movie rumble in the bronx.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 9 September 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i meant "chan," not "cahn" obviously.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 9 September 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"A Life Less Ordinary" is one of my favorite songs of the 90s.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 9 September 2004 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I STILL LOVE YOU THE GIRL FROM MARS

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 9 September 2004 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked 1977. "Goldfinger" is a massively excellent track. "Kung Fu" was entertaining.

Beyond that? Meh..

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 9 September 2004 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

some great singles, second album underrated, first album overrated.

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Thursday, 9 September 2004 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"Girl from Mars" and "Oh Yeah" rocked it!

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 9 September 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

OH CHRIST- yess to Goldfinger. One of the first singles I ever bought and I still listen to it now. a life less ordinary also seconded.

But thats all.

may, Thursday, 9 September 2004 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Kung Fu is everything pop punk should be.

David Allen (David Allen), Thursday, 9 September 2004 07:10 (twenty-one years ago)

oh my god, they suck so bad that if you get any closer than three feet of them you will be smallowed up

lukey (Lukey G), Thursday, 9 September 2004 07:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Fantastic singles band and good live too. My girlfriend loves 'em.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Thursday, 9 September 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

A total waste of plastic after 1996. Good before that

DJ Mencap0))), Thursday, 9 September 2004 08:14 (twenty-one years ago)

'Angel Intercepter' and 'Kung Fu' are still fantastic, but
after Nu-Clear Sounds it all became prematurely middle-aged rinky-dink bollocks and embarassing tuneless stabs at rock without any spark whatsoever.

cis (cis), Thursday, 9 September 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Ash, but I think that's because they came into my life just at the right time, when I was getting over teenpop bands, and starting to like guitar music.

The problem about their music is that they've always been about 17-19 in terms of their songs, which is a bit awkward now that they're in their mid 20s. They've tried to grow up, and their 'grown up' songs just don't work at all.

jellybean (jellybean), Thursday, 9 September 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Kingmaker with a couple of pretty faces.
Why bother?

wtin, Thursday, 9 September 2004 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

They only have like two singles that aren't great.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 9 September 2004 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Burn Baby Burn

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 9 September 2004 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

As above: Kung Fu, Girl From Mars and Burn Baby Burn all classic punk-pop. Everything else unmemorable at best with the exception of Candy which is diabolical slush.

Ben Dot (1977), Thursday, 9 September 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh God, "Candy", WORST SONG EVER!!!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 9 September 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"Candy" isn't that bad.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 9 September 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

'Oh Yeah' and the song from the 'Life Less Ordinary' s/t are great...

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 9 September 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember reading a nice slagging of 'Girl From Mars' in the music press along the lines of "fucking stupid indie boys with their 'women are from another planet' exoticism crappery".

It is indeed a rubbish song.

I have 'Uncle Pat' on 7". I quite like that.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 9 September 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Ash's singles when I hear them somewhere. I couldn't be bothered to download any, though.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 9 September 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Everything that came out before the first album: classic.

Everything since then: totally dire to "ooh it's alright I guess but no Uncle Pat now is it?". Except the inner sleeve of the LP which is classic.

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 10 September 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Entire first album is excellent, spesh lost in you. five singles from that album are indie guitar at it's best.

everything since, meh. neither nor.

Darraghmac, Friday, 10 September 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Good singles, fairly non-essential otherwise, though I may care to dig deeper one day.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 10 September 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The early singles & Trailer mini-album all great up to Kung Fu, after that not so good but still the odd great pop-punk single every now and then. I liked a few songs off Free All Angels, haven't heard the more recent stuff.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 10 September 2004 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, start this thread while I'm on holiday, right.

Anyway, apparently the view amongst the Kerrang kiddies is that Charlotte Hatherly "ruined" Ash. What exactly was there to ruin? I mean, before she joined, they'd managed the grand total of one good chorus and a whole pile of shit. She's just made sure they stick to the second part of the equation.

Clue: power-pop bands sampling Dr Dre can never be a good thing.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 11 September 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

thirteen years pass...

Well, I happen to really like their most recent album. I wish Charlotte was still in the band, though.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 17:25 (eight years ago)
