Are you bothered about The Coral?

Steve, I know you are

"Shadows Fall" is a great song, very 19th century, gothic and mysterious, but still fun. It sounds like a new track by the singing busts in the graveyard of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion.

I find them quite irritating, to be honest. On the other hand, I'm quite pleased that I can offload their first two EPs on eBay for a shiteload of cash

I'm reviving this thread since there is no Coral classic or dud yet. They seem very hated on ILx judging from a search I just did, yet this hatred is never backed up - people are just saying "I hate them" or "they're abismal". Why do you hate them? I must say, I'm not a big fan of any of these new "the" guitar pop bands coming out at the moment. I find that the majority of these bands are VERY boring Shed Seven-a-likes but I'm listening to the Coral right now and it's just... confusing! I don't know whether I hate it or whether it's the best thing evah.
To me it harks back to baggy and early Britpop like the Boo Radleys and Modern Life-era Blur but I'm unsure whether it's done particularly better or whether it's been marketed in this way. THe whole thing seems so contrived and commercial yet the tunes are excellent and instantly appealing. I like the fact they use a lot of different instruments and noises in a King Crimson stylee.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

I liked that first record, but it might have to do with my love of all things Liverpudlian, and I'll admit I haven't listened to it in a few months. I do really like the fact that they're coming out with a new album so soon rather than dicking around for a long time like most bands do now. So hopefully they can develop their "sound" fairly quick and impress.

The album sounds like ass. I hope people come to their senses ASAP

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 23:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

My main problem with them is the vocals - must they sing like that? Shack did this sort of thing a million times better.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 23:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

esoj is right. I bought the CD on the strength of the single but it was ebayed within a month. They've got the potential to be a great singles band, like Madness. But like Madness they have to ditch the aping of other bands and find their own voice.

At the moment there's a deaths head torpor in their music which makes their album sound like listening to the ghosts of old records. There's nothing about them which leaves a lasting impression other than they have pretty good taste in old vinyl, and that just isn't enough.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 23:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

I totally ignored them last year because, well, they started with "The" and the NME liked 'em, so I figured best not bother. Have since heard "Simon Diamond" and dig it lots- Billy's statement that their music only shows that "they have pretty good taste in old vinyl" makes them even more interesting to me, as I love those kinda bands (cf: my love of Primal Scream, Beck)

I just grabbed the promo copy of these guys too. Hate seeing threads I can't offer my opinion on. :(

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 6 March 2003 00:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm in with Billy on this. Picked up the CD after hearing the one song and the endless namechecking on Mojo and gave it a shot. So, what am I'm missing? Or are some folks that desperate for backwards-tracked guitar and vocal harmonies these days?

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Thursday, 6 March 2003 05:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well i think they wicked and refreshing. Completely unlike anything else i've heard recently.
Think the harmonies are haunting and cool and love the different instruments. A quality album...looking forward to hearing the new one.

ugh. i don't like them at all. really obnoxious music.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 6 March 2003 10:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

the album's fun to listen to. i might have loved them 10 years ago.

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 6 March 2003 13:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, I don't regret buying it, I like the singles, but I don't think I'll play it much. The whole aren't-they-eclectic thing is a bit of a red herring. Could be a great singles band. They remind me of the Teardrop Explodes, oddly, but less focussed. I can't think why that is, apart from the Liverpool thing.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 6 March 2003 13:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

I agree Tom. I just guessed it might have something to do with Ian Broudie producing them.

Their new album is actually very good. Really. Definitely better than 'Magic and Loss'.

zeus, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 10:19 (eighteen years ago) link

I liked the last single, seemed uncharacteristically pretty. Album got 5 stars in the Independent, but then it is Andy Gill doing the reviews there so perhaps I shouldn't read too much into that.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 10:31 (eighteen years ago) link

'In The Morning' can sod right off. What are the best tracks from the last two albums? Anything a bit skewiff ala 'Skeleton Key' or 'Goodbye'?

Weird, I decided to put on the first album yesterday and it's a lot better than many would give it credit for.

Bite your tongue Dog, better than the Boo’s? Not a chance in hell!!!!!!!!

Their debut was pretty good but still didn’t break my top 20 for that year. Everything else I can take or leave but have only heard the new one once. They are more Boo Radleys influenced so that is never a bad thing.

BeeOK (boo radley), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 10:51 (eighteen years ago) link

shit. the previous album was called 'Magic and Medicine' of course.
thanks, elwisty.

You should listen "Arabian Sand" and "The Operator" from the new album.

zeus, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 10:58 (eighteen years ago) link

There was a very purty skeewiffle thing played in HMV last night, and the title track sounded good too.

What's the general consensus about these guys in here?
A friend lend me on his record collection for a month and I thought this band was pretty decent, after a few listens I discovered I was more willing to listen to them than to any of the other generic britpop bullshit in his collection.

Moka, Thursday, 2 July 2009 05:38 (fourteen years ago) link

Mani introduced the The Coral onstage in Salford last night (July 17), before declaring that their new LP 'Butterfly House' is the "best thing I've heard since the first [Stone] Roses album".

He continued: "I honestly think it's the best thing I've heard since the Roses' first album - it makes me wanna drop acid. I really mean it. Proper music made by top musicians."

Surprised this thread isn't way bigger.

I never fully got into this band but I think they unfairly got lumped in with a lot of weak britpop and indie because of how they looked (probably doesn't help that they supported Oasis and Artic Monkeys and had other associations with them and the disappointing Zutons). But they were doing something far more interesting and at best they often managed to capture this amazing atmospheric b-movie vibe but better than those b-movies. The first album had that in spades, the second did nothing for me apart from the beautiful opening track.

Nightfreak And The Sons Of Becker was great fun but they didn't consider it a proper album and said it was just for fun but I liked it more than a lot of their other stuff. Invisible Invasion had some good stuff. I think it had some folk horror stuff going on and I remember they did a really good gig with all that sort of imagery as a cool backdrop.

but the response to their next album was weak and I never heard about them after that.

Anyone heard their recent stuff?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 4 September 2016 12:18 (seven years ago) link

Their first album is classic, never bothered with the rest.

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 4 September 2016 13:28 (seven years ago) link

I haven't heard anything they've done since Bill Ryder-Jones left, but I enjoy the first 4 or 5 releases, particularly the first one and The Invisible Invasion. I do wish they'd done more stuff like 'Skeleton Key', though!

Despite (or rather, because of) coming from the same clutch of small towns on the Wirral as these guys, at the very same time, I've always passed their music by and only started wondering about them recently. I listened to the new album a couple of times yesterday and I like it. It's pretty, but not too much; really well-crafted, with a hint of oddness or at least something a bit different. There's barely a song over 3 minutes long, but they didn't feel slight at all, I was just left, in a good way, wanting to listen to it all again. I guess this isn't a departure for them and I'm perhaps going to be left wondering why I steadfastly ignored them for the past 20+ years. Anyone else heard this new one? What do you more au fait ILXors think?

brain (krakow), Sunday, 12 August 2018 07:37 (five years ago) link

It's very low key but I quite like it too. If you're into this one I'd suggest Butterfly House is the best of their recent era of relaxed, gently odd albums. Overall their debut remains my favourite but has a rather different sound

Bill Ryder Jones' new album is fantastic, very different to the others he's done. He seems to getting much more attention this time round.

A track off West Kirby County Primary came up on my Discover Weekly and for whatever reason, this and Yawn are sounding perfect this afternoon, particularly the latter. That drifting, midwest-emo inflected slowcore is very much my bag.

Happy to see a revive... I've been listening to Bill Ryder-Jones a lot recently, especially Yawn. Brilliant album and it's been really hitting the spot for me too this summer/autumn. As in my comment above regarding The Coral, I very much regret that I didn't pay more attention to him from the beginning.

brain (krakow), Wednesday, 9 September 2020 07:55 (three years ago) link

have avoided this lots stuff that's always in the bins, but yesterday after this revival i spotted a mint 2cd edition of 'butterfly house' in a charity shop for 50p, so decided to give it a go.
after 3 listens i have decided that it's really enjoyable byrds-esque guitar pop.
will probably pick up their other charity bin fillers when i get the chance.

Feels like there should be a Bill Ryder-Jones thread. New album is excellent.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Wednesday, 7 February 2024 20:31 (two months ago) link

That would be great. I've really come to love his music. We saw him a couple of weeks ago on the low-key album launch solo acoustic dates, which was great, then are catching the 'proper' tour in March as well.

brain (krakow), Thursday, 8 February 2024 19:21 (two months ago) link

Whereas, I finally saw The Coral live in December and was pretty non-plussed, and I wasn't really taken by their most recent album.
