Died of a brain aneurysm aged 47

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 28 August 2004 20:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeep. :-( (This is the type of thing that starts making one worry the more one approaches 'middle age.')

Perhaps "Disco 2000" was the greatest tribute to her.

RIP

younger than i figured :(

seems like a good place to ask for recommendations for songs by her as good as 'gloria' and 'self control'...

NOTHING is as good as "Self Control"

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 28 August 2004 20:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Eek! I had just finished downloading "Gloria" for an '80s mix I'm making. Then I click over and read this.

I've never felt worse about abusing p2p than I do right now.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 28 August 2004 20:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Her track on the Ghostbusters OST is Hot.

Solitaire, it gets so lonely.

Not that this'll slow you down or anything, of course

you've got to walk right through that fire, it will not burn you
and the once you may love, only life won't make it, or just burn away

S: "Te Amo," "I Found Someone," and her cover of "Dim All the Lights"

my dad will be very sad about this.

maria tessa sciarrino, Saturday, 28 August 2004 23:28 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't like this news. This sucks.

It seems to me I used to like Self Control a lot, but I can't remember how it goes at all, now.

Bimble (bimble), Saturday, 28 August 2004 23:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Young Johnny Fever had a big crush on Laura Branigan, only surpassed by his crush on Belinda Carlisle in her Go-Go's days.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 28 August 2004 23:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Wow - she covered the Who song Squeeze Box??

Bimble (bimble), Saturday, 28 August 2004 23:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Sad news indeed. "Gloria" is always the song that comes to mind instantly whenever I mentally drift back to 1982-turning-to-1983 (for whatever reason), and it deserves to be. RIP.

another bit of my childhood gone :-(

I did coke with her brother once in the Eighties. I used to see his record in cut-out bins all the time but I never bought it.

Anyway, "Self-Control" is utterly, utterly classic. What a shame.

Life is so uncertain. Sad news.

I really wish I had the videos for "Self-Control" and "Solitaire," they're great. I do have "Shattered Glass," though.

I bought her first two solo albums on a whim once, check out the album track "Mama."

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 August 2004 01:23 (nineteen years ago) link

"self control" has that great part where everything stops and she goes "ohhhh uhhhh ahhhh" "uuhhhh ahhhhh ohhhhh" . It was buried away in my subconscious until I heard it at the madrid airport a few years ago and had a crazy flashback to being about 4 years old. I really liked that part.

Elliot (Elliot), Sunday, 29 August 2004 04:45 (nineteen years ago) link

crap.. I used the wrong braces..should be "oooooh uhhh ahhhh" (BAM!) "uhhhhh ahhhhh ohhhhh" (BAM!) etc..

fifteen years pass...

Someone sang the shitty Bolton version of "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You?" tonight and it made me miss Laura.

Love her version. And her tunes.

"Gloria" will never be beaten

Is this where I admit that Gloria is p much always my most played song on Spotify? It is just so good. Her voice was amazing.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 30 October 2023 19:04 (five months ago) link

A little odd to me that "Self Control" has 90 million more Spotify streams than "Gloria". "Gloria" seemed like her biggest song.

Self-Control > Gloria

I don't know if any of you listen to Mo Rocca's Mobituaries podcast—I don't usually—but his Laura Branigan episode is so perfect I've gone back to it three times in as many years.

Oh I haven't but I will. I'm not a huge fan of self control! Solitaire on the other hand.
