Whatever happened to Orgy?

You know, that cyber-electro-industrial-goth-glam-pop-metal thing that was supposed to reduce all of rawk to binary code and transmit it into the next dimension? With 80s covers?

dave q, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Their guitarist who used to be in the hair-metal/misspelling band Rough Cutt is called 'Amir Derakh', as in "I'm here to rock"!

dave q, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

What a shame, I thought maybe he was indian or something.

Kris, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

He looked like Stephen Dorff.

turner, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I thought they were called Nylon Pylon now?

kate, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I saw the hairdressing salon where one of them used to work when I was in Orange County. Perhaps he's returned to follicle fold?

Nicole, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Maybe they imploded into their own suckiness.

Dave225, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Who cares? Good riddance.

Alex in NYC, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

actually, they put out a new album this year (or was it last) that i have on tape, and i kinda like it. its way less annoying than the blue monday cover. i would actually recommmend a search for it

matt, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, Amir Derakh, who's probably pushing 40 now, managed to reinvent himself into a space-rock numetal dude... long gone are the LA hair metal days. The sub-mediocre shit band Beautiful Creatures have done the same, dying their hair black and piercing their lips, but they too are veterans of the LA hair days in bands like Bang Tango et al. Of course, they don't like talking about that too much.. And what of Powerman 5000?

Andy, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha. Amir goes to "glam night" at the Viper Room on mondays and hits on underage girls. And the other nerds Andy mentioned, "The Beautiful Creatures" lie about their age and just got dropped by their label. Tee hee. To catch them lying go to the absolutly KICK ASS website www.metal-sludge.com

chaki, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

metal-sludge cracks me up. Did you read Dan Spitz' insane ramblings about anthrax?

Nude Spock, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Metal Sludge = gods. If you want the direct link to the 'trash Orgy's lame roots' section, go hence.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

That first pic of Jay Gordon looks like Ralph Machio with a perm.

bnw, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

God, that's classic! It's like rocker stalinism, exposing all the guys dark secrets and ending careers just for the fun of it.

Andy, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Didn't they do their own lipstick/eyeliner line yet? Viva Goth?

daria gray, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Album came out this year, it was sticky tacked to my celling till recently.

I be hung over, arrrgh.

amir derakh is the most talented, sweetest person alive

You won't be saying that when he stops giving you the high-strength industrial crack you currently consume.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Y'know what..? They did -one- f^cking cover. Wow. One. Ooh.

Blue Monday was a tribute to the 80's for them.

Some people need to do some -research-.

Oh.. and by the way.. if I could. I'd have sex Amir. He is really hot. Screw you all. :D

Just because they looked a little odd in the 80's means nothing. I'm sure if I was older.. I would've looked like them in the 80's most definitely!

I can respect you if you don't -like- Orgy.. but when you -rant- about Orgy.. that's just pathetic. Why don't you guys talk about freakin' Limp Bizkit.. now -there- is a band to rip on. Jeezus Chryst.

Love, Ravenna

Ravenna St. Clair, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Amir *is* really hot for a 45 year old with a bunch of make up on trying to fit in with the kids.

chaki, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

May I interject as The Gloved One in this Beat It Video of a thread?

Have any of you guys heard the rest of that eponymous Orgy record? I'm very curious, because I haven't. And you know, that "Blue Monday" cover has really grown on me. It kinda melds the worlds of poofy pop glam and the Wax Trax sound, which isn't done enough. If the rest of the album is similar in style to the "Blue Monday" cover, I'd love to hear it.

Brian MacDonald, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

And Amir Derakh is a really great name. Sorry Kris.

Remind me again why you're complaining in detail.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm ranting.. 'cause I'm defending them. It only makes sense.

Ravenna St. Clair, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Rejoice. Orgy's disappearance from popular view is the most persuasive proof yet that not only does God exist: He is kind, and dislikes bad music as much as we do.

John Darnielle, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm ranting.. 'cause I'm defending them. It only makes sense.

I feel much better now.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

'god' does not exist. (But that's a -totally- different subject..)

Orgy is -still- popular. They still have lots of fans. They are just not shitty mainstream like you people probably like. Ew.

What the fuck are you faggets ripping on Orgy for? I'm with Ravenna here, don't criticize people that are just making good music. I hope Mike Tyson eats all your children, fuckers.

Tony, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Jeez. I'd hate to think what sort of flotsam this board would attract if we started ripping on Placebo or the Smashing Pumpkins..

It's Raggett, two 't's, please. As to why, I think your answer actually provides part of the explanation.

I'm with Ravenna here, don't criticize people that are just making good music.

Your comments have been noted by the management.

I hope Mike Tyson eats all your children, fuckers.

Hm. I give that a 3.7.

Aw, it's so sad. Signed to a major label only six months after forming in 1997, then that nasty piracy ruined the sales of their second record. Now they want $100,000 to release two eps? GTFO

I already copped to liking them, but that's some assholery.

such a rad and weird single... nu-metal's relationship with industrial rock was more implied than realized except with these guys and like contemporaneous fear factory records, but it is such a rad sound, all these weird detuned guitar lines like bending light trails through a techno-industrial cityscape.... more nu-metal should've taken from gary numan as well

very obsessed with this record again lol, i gradually ended up rejecting it as a teen bc the lyrics came off to me as embarrassing cyberpunk nonsense... of course now i think that's fine and good

there was also an inherent queerness in orgy's presentation + the intermittent references in the music to gender and androgyny, which may have been a total put-on but i appreciate it anyway

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 18:39 (two weeks ago) link

I just realized that I think a lot about this album. Even though I haven't listened to it in years, the lyrics will pop into my head fairly regularly. Not sure what that says about me, but it definitely left an impression.
