Not just Beat Happening, not just Dub Narcotic, not just Halo Benders, not just K Records. Defend the man through his various projects as an artist (and, if you wish, a person).

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 26 August 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Who is he?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 26 August 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

A very creepy man.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 26 August 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

There are rumors about groupies. The younger they are, the better.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 26 August 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i have never ever, to the best of my knowledge, heard anything that calvin johnson has ever done. never. am i missing anything great?

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I can tolerate Halo Benders records because he's not singing the whole time (although, he's offset by Doug Martsch, so that might not be your thing either).

Beat Happening = complete poo. Proof the indie canon is flawed.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Beat Happening - Dreamy

One of the best albuns ever.

Elvis is Dead, Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic:
* Beat Happening up to _You Turn Me On_
* The Go Team, from beginning to end
* backing vocals on _One Foot In the Grave_
* Halo Benders in places ("Don't Touch My Bikini," "Freedom Ride," a few others)
* "Love Will Come Back Again"
* some of the best live shows I've ever seen

Dud:
* Beat Happening _You Turn Me On_
* _What Was Me_ other than "Love Will Come Back Again" (not terrible, but disappointing)
* most Dub Narcotic Sound System
* people misinterpreting K as a "twee" label or accusing Calvin of "ruining music for an entire generation"

mike a, Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he heard me make fun of his giant headphone-sized ear protectors at a show one time. This was the same show where he was playing songs off of his solo album. He played like 5 songs (which were ok) and then "took questions" for literally like an hour. It was like 1:00 AM and he was just talking about hanging out in the town where he was playing. Even when people stopped raising their hands to ask questions, he was like "Anyone? Anyone?" Finally he played like three more songs and stopped.

n.a. (Nick A.), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

On the other hand, his singing voice is fun to imitate.

n.a. (Nick A.), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

awww "You Turn Me On" was great
also, see "C Is The Heavenly Option" where he really does make the song perfect opposite amelia's cutsie bouncy vox

i have a few of the early dub narcotic 7"s but the joke wore a bit thin (not that i think it was a joke to him, but irony as a lifestyle gets a bit old)

in general:
while i love some beat happening just for historical/personal reasons, i feel calvin is largely a detriment to songs rather than an asset to them.

rentboy (rentboy), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Beat Happening = grand (we've been over this before; Mark S condensed the discussion into "grr-punkah" and "wuv kittenhood" and it was awesome) + You Turn Me On is in most ways the best thing they ever did, so shut up, you; it's the Beat Happening equivalent of the Pastels' Illumination, wherein shamble-band suddenly sort of learns what they're doing and yet still create the same sounds; also "Ponytail," people, "Ponytail"

Halo Benders = ehh, though charming in spots thanks to classic technique of having two different guys singing two different songs at the same time; if you don't like one version, just listen to the other; plus DON'T TOUCH MY BIKINI

Dub Narcotic = release a whole lot of records for a band that's only really pulled off three or four successful funky runs

Solo and Other Projects = life is currently too short for me to have really spend much time looking into these

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

There are rumors about groupies. The younger they are, the better.

Whaddaya expect? How much more "twee" can you get?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

And Calvin-as-personage is essential to Beat Happening in a million ways; Beat Happening with just Heather singing would be just another shambling pop band. Sonically and focus-wise and in many senses I don't know how to describe, Calvin was to Beat Happening approximately what Mark E. Smith is to the Fall, only without firing everybody all the time.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Jamboree is a great album.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Anthony OTM. I like all BH pretty much, I've heard probably 75% of it. Well, I still haven't gotten into my promo copy of "Music To Climb..."

DNSS has always seemed sorta pointless, even on the good songs. I dug the solo record.

"Love Is The Heavenly Option" (or whatever it was called) = best Calvin appearance ever.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

nabisco OTM. Calvin's a singular, original force of personality. His vision encapsulates more than just music; it's an alternate world.

sexyDancer, Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

eh, I definitely see where a case could be made for YTMO (and i do like _illumination_). but i still don't like it. i'd probably rate it more if the songs were a little shorter.

mike a, Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i think YTMO is v.good, in fact i like all the BH records though i can't say i play them too often (gah i saw the box set on sale for $25 and i passed it up for some reason).

that said calvin's musical "revue", "the moon is up there" (seen by this poster at coolidge corner, brookline mass.) was horrendous. i guess it "demystified" putting on a show by, uh, not really putting on much of a show at all (n.a.'s story abt him taking questions does not surprise me), but it was def. more fun to discuss afterwards than to sit through (he went on until 1:30 AM and for some reason we stayed).

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

His vision encapsulates more than just music; it's an alternate world.

just like Michael Jackson.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I like about 10 beat happening songs (check the BH thread), 1 dnss song (fuck shit up), 2 halo benders songs (god don't make no junk & snow falling).

as for him personally, i had the extreme displeasure of him tagging along with a friend of mine in town when they were touring together and he was one of the most annoying and immature people i've ever met. my friend was constantly rolling his eyes and apologizing for him and it made the afternoon interminable and i couldn't wait to go back to work (!!!). at the show later that night, during the intermission between calvin's first 2 songs, he attempted to insult me from the stage. it was a pretty depressing display of character for a 40 something year old manchild.

there is an ILX poster on here who has a really good story which sums up calvin's character.

HI DERE (gygax!), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

well... the world would have been a lot better off without any heavenly records, imo.
aside from that, having talked to calvin before and walked away feeling the way i do
when i make sympathetic conversational broadstrokes to a senile elderly person, i can
say that his (intentional?) weirdness is justification enough for the necessity of this thread.

also, he met my ex-girlfriend through some makeoutclub.com stupid thing and they
chatted a couple times... he asked for her address... she thought it was creepy but
for some reason gave it to him anyway... a couple days later the ENTIRE available K
catalog shows up.... weird...

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, I've gotta fake a girl-profile on Makeoutclub.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

(gah i saw the box set on sale for $25 and i passed it up for some reason).

was this on some website 2 or 3 years ago? some site fucked up and had it on sale for a low, low price, notice of which made the rounds of my college radio station's listserv. I ordered it, having only ever heard the song Indian Summer (and that only b/c it had been covered by Sonic Boom), but the site eventually canceled all the orders for the box set. to this day I've still only heard Indian Summer, but my disappointment at not receiving the box set was tempered later when I read the BH chapter in Our Band Could Be Your Life. there's no way I would like that shit

comme personne (common_person), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

weird, cuz i was just gonna say that he wrote 'indian summer', a song that i do actually like, thus being my defense for calvin

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Oops, just checked another thread about Calvin and saw that I gave big ups to What Was Me. I do remember listening to it for about a week. I must've written that posting during that week. I don't think I've bothered since.

mike a, Friday, 27 August 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

in adding to the creep/perv slant, an old gf of mine said she was at one of his shows (may have been beat happening) and he went up to her without saying anything and lifted up her dress to have a peek underneath.

I did see dub narcotic play once and can honestly say I don't get what the big deal is about that group. it just seemed like a purposely bad fratboy band somehow.

joseph pot (STINKOR™), Saturday, 28 August 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

WHOA I never really made the connection that that it's his vocals on One Foot in the Grave, even though it shows his name & photo plain as day and the voice is totally recognizable.

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 28 August 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i actually don't like any calvin johnson or cal j.- affiliated projects, certainly not anything with anyone from built to spill involved. his label is mostly rubbish too, a few gems but mostly lousy. his attitude is great though and he's a terrible but big dancer.

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 28 August 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I never heard any Dub Narcotic records, but they played Atlanta about a year ago and I remember at the time I thought it was the best show I'd ever seen.

The bass player in particularly blew me away and Johnson's solos were sublime in a way I'd never thought possible. He plays guitar solos like a 7 year old that knows how to hold down the strings but doesn't know the notes. I know that sounds like a dis but it isn't; it was ridiculous and transcendent.

I heard he was in a rather bad car accident recently and he hasn't been the same person since. This is from my friends who know him personally, so it could be true..

Adam Bruneau (oliver8bit), Saturday, 28 August 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

he put out a Karp record.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Saturday, 28 August 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Karp open for Beck in '94 at the Fillmore in SF. The bass players Jazz Bass jackplate kept falling out and therefore his bass kept cutting out. One of the drummers cymbals was ripped to shreds. After the set one of them mooned the audience. Geraldine Fibbers were on next and someone beaned Carla in the chest with an apple.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 28 August 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

there are actually quite a few more good records on k than i would have expected before i took time and thought about it

his "influence" is pernicious to say the least

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 28 August 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

While this doesn't invalidate most of the above criticisms, it's kinda fucked up in context to start a thread on a man who, until just recently, has been suffering the effects of brain damage due to a van accident in east Montana almost a year ago. He suffered from chronic stuttering. I had to see it before my eyes one time, and it was really difficult. I heard he has gotten better, and I hope that's true.

The man may have shortcomings (allegedly.. i've never met anyone directly involved in those shortcomings), but he's also not a "bad guy" on the flip. He had and always knows exactly "why he is doing" in regards to Beat Happening... he's also very much a music geek and great DJ, and had turned on folks like Steve Fisk and others onto stuff like early ON-U Sound type material in the mid 80s, amongst a lot of other stuff. And he's been a friend and supporter of many worthy folks and causes in Seattle, Olympia, and Ellensburg (the latter of which where he grew up.. which is certainly penance for anything he's done after.)

(Slight digression, speaking of Ellensburg, possibly the best record store in Washington state is in Ellensburg and is run/owned by Mark Pickerel (Screaming Trees, Truly, Steve Fisk, Pell Mell, etc.). The store is Rodeo Records. Mark is a super super nice guy, and the store is certainly worth a day's worth of browsing. Anyway, sorry for the digression.)

it's kinda fucked up in context to start a thread on a man who, until just recently, has been suffering the effects of brain damage due to a van accident in east Montana almost a year ago.

In all fairness, I did wait a year to start this thread.

i couldn't agree more, latebloomer.

And anyway, the women [sic] probably wasn't a total victim.

eh, Trever? what are you suggesting here? in any case she took it in stride, probably either because of or in spite of the "underground celebrity" status involved.

joseph pot (STINKOR™), Sunday, 29 August 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Who waits more than week to start any thread on ILX much less waits a year to start a perfectly valid criticism/defense thread on somebody even in the wake of tragedy?

If you knew Calvin had gone through the accident, you could have started the thread at any time and just made a slight acknowledgement of the tragedy in the subject, if you really did feel bad about doing so.

eight months pass...

http://pitchfork.com/news/66305-k-records-selling-headquarters-to-pay-phil-elverum-kimya-dawson-others/

Pitchfork June 2016 article -K Records owner Calvin Johnson (of Beat Happening) said the label didn’t “have any money,” and that they were “selling everything [they] can to make money to pay the people [they] owe.” Now, in a continued effort to raise money, they are selling their label headquarters, according to The Olympian (via Spin). The building, which is a former synagogue, is currently listed for $399,000. Johnson told the paper, “We’re hoping that with selling the building and some of the equipment that we’ll be able to get back to break even.”

So did he sell the house and pay off (some or all) of money owed?

Johnson is touring Europe this month (November 2016) as Selector Dub Narcotic
