Toby Keith's "I Wanna Talk About Me": Classic or Dud?

I hear this song the other day. Country singer gets all support-groupy for the purpose of skewering both his own insecurities and his significant other's chatterbox egocentricity. But maybe if I heard it every day I'd want to shoot myself.

Basic rule: never trust anyone with a last name that is also a first name. I think that applies here.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

A pity, as I knew this one guy named Carruthers Fitzwilliam. Knew somebody else named Hand Job, but that might have been a joke.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Actually, Ned, the opposite is true: Never trust someone with a first name that is also a last name.

Ah hell, Tracer, don't trust anyone. That means don't trust me, either. I'm sure Toby Keith's new ditty is fabulous, even if his previous albums were terrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible.

Interesting, while flipping through the tele channels the other day I accidently stopped on CMT and this fellow was on their talking about this song. I really had no opinion on it, just seems like any other smoothlikecountrywestern song. The one thing I did tell myself was that, I bet they will never talk about this on ILM. Boy, was I wrong.

Jeff, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ok, what the hell, Tracer?

Alright you asked for it:

We talk about your work
How your boss is a jerk
We talk about your church And your head when it hurts
We talk about the trouble you've been having with your brother
Bout your daddy and your mother and your crazy ex-lover
We talk about your friends and the places that you've been
We talk about your skin andthe dimples on your chin
The polish on your toes and the run in your hose
And god knows we always talk about your clothes

You know talking about you
makes me smile
But every once in a while... (big crescendo)

I wanna talk about me
wanna talk about I
Wanna talk about number 1 oh my me my
What I think, what I like, what I know, what I want, what I see...
I like talking about U U U U usually...
But occasionally...
I wanna talk about meeeee

We talk about your dreams
And we talk about your schemes
Your high school team and your moisturizing cream
We talk about your nana up in Muncie Indiana
We talk about your grandma, down in Alabama
We talk about your guys of every shape and size
The ones that you despise and the ones you idolize
We talk about your heart, bout your brains and your smarts
Bout your medical charts and when you start...

You know talking about you makes me grin...
But every now and then... (big buildup)

I wanna talk about me
wanna talk about I
Wanna talk about number 1 oh my me my
What I think, what I like, what I know, what I want, what I see...
I like talking about U U U U usually...
But occasionally...
I wanna talk about meeeee

You, you, you, you, You, you, you, you (slow)
You, you, you, you, you (fast)

I wanna talk about me!
I wanna talk about me!

Go meee!

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

He wants to talk about his number 1's? I didn't know country music pandered to the fetish crowd these days.

I specifically looked this song up so I could rail it. It has to be the worst song ever. I hope this song never is played again, anywhere, or for any reason. Old country is good. This new stuff is so crappy.

Toby Keith is a great singer and this song is one of the best that I have ever heard. Whoever thinks that this song sucks is crazy. Yeah, old country is good but it's old. C'mon, we're in the year 2002-- not the 50's--things change, tastes change...we need more songs like this one. Keep 'em coming Toby! You're doing great!

Samantha H., Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

(yes, my username WAS made up because of the song when it first came out...it's a long story...nevermind.)

I LOOOOVE this song, and I think Toby is a fantastic songwriter, even more so when you consider all the lifeless pop-country crap they are pushing these days. I think the song is HILARIOUS!!! The video is the type that gets you laughing so loud you annoy everyone else in the house!

I love both old and new country, if it's good: Gary Allan, George Strait, The Thompson Brothers Band, The Kinleys, Lefty Frizzell, Bob Wills, The Dixie Chicks, Asleep At The Wheel, The Don Campbell Band, Trisha Yearwood, David Ball, Sawyer Brown, Leane Rimes, Billy Gilman, Toby Keith, Chris Cagle, Dwight Yoakam, Don Williams, George Jones, Clint Black, Collin Raye, Joe Dee Messina, Brooks & Dunn, Joe Macey, Bobby Carlson (who just got a contact in Nashville, YEE- HAW!), the John Penney Band, Trick Pony, Brad Paisley, etc.

Being a woman who DOES talk a lot, I can see how they guys would love this song! And I do not find it the least bit offensive!!! One of Toby's best, right there with "Should Have Been A Cowboy", "Dream Walkin'", "Ya Ain't Much Fun", "My List" and "How Do You Like Me Now"!

talkaboutmetoo, is there a Toby Keith best-of I could pick up, with the songs you mention on it? And what do you think about the "we're gonna put a boot in your ass" anti-terrorist song? Funny or creepy?

This is probably one of my favorite songs he has put out. I think it is hysterical, clever, funny and so true (I can totally relate to the all-about-me concept). My all time favorite though Now, is the Angry American. I looooove Toby :-)

He has a point...All people who have a first name as a last name are always hiding some "other identity". Think about it:
Clark KENT, Barry ALLEN, Bruce WAYNE, Hal JORDAN, Peter PARKER.

Any song where a country singer raps the verses is not going to be good.

"How Do You Like Me Now?!" is "Sk8ter Boi" but a lot better (but not as good as "Jack the Ripper").

Who else would Toby want to talk about? When you're that goddamned good no-one else is worth talking about. Those wussy college boys who've left town for summer? Better off with the dusty old country singer who feeds his horses beer. I'm sure he wouldn't like me. I mean, no-one does but he definitely wouldn't.

And it's only 'occasionally' he wants to talk about himself. The rest of the time he talks about how he'll put the boot in your ass, or how he'll go down to Mexico and sing into the wind about your locks, because the girls Toby looks for all have locks not hair. He's real romantic like that. And y'know, he says 'you' like a whole 10 times during the song. And he says it really loud so he must mean it because anything Toby does quietly he's probably trying to hide and its only his downright honest-ee pushing it out of him.

I bet his bed covers are the American flag.
