Gilbert O'Sullivan C/D

Time for a re-evaluation of this guy?

I mean, some of the most beautiful melodic pop ballads this side of Paul McCartney, certainly great stuff with lots of interesting harmonic stuff going on. "Alone Again Naturally" simply is a pop songwriting masterpiece, nothing less.

I do realise that some people may find the subject matter of his lyrics somewhat trivial. If that is the case, imagine "Clair" is about pedophilia and "Get Down" is about S/M, and suddenly the tweeness is gone forever ;)

I'm up for it. Although I can't bring myself to purchase the multi-disc set that Rhino Handmade just issued, but I'm a fan of the "Himself" record and "I'm A Writer, Not A Fighter" has some decent tracks. Really need to pick up the first two LPs. Great stuff if you like the smart, early solo McCartney stuff or if the idea of a few Randy Newman appeals to you.

"Get Down" is one of the 20 worst songs ever recorded.

But Gilbert's apparently really popular in anime circles ("Maison Ikkoku" and such).

I'm interested. "Alone Again Naturally" is really maudlin, though.

Marcello agrees with you Geir.

"Nothing Rhymed" is a bit of a tune.

"Nothing Rhymed" and "Alone Again (Naturally)" are generally seen as his two best tunes, and I that is natural and obvious. Both are absolutely awesome while I have to admit the rest of his output is slightly more hit'n'miss.

"Get Down" is actually about Mr O'Sullivan's pet dog.

Enjoy life and learn English with the sing-along-a-karaoke subtitled version of Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again (Naturally)"

I like to replace the line "and climbing to the top, will throw myself off" with "and climbing to the top, will toss myself right off"

JUSTICE picked his 'alone again, naturally' as one of their fave trax ever in a recent radio 1 show. never really heard it before but what an amazing tune!

"Alone Again" is good, but "Clair" is something else. And, yes, it's supposed to trick you into thinking about pedophilia right up until the end. And then it suddenly gets even creepier.

late-era (90's) track "Ooh Baby" must surely be a Balaeric classic in some circles...

Tonight my comedian friend went to see him in NYC and ran into a colleague: Gilbert Gottfried. True story.
