Not bad, definitely has a Second Coming sort of feel to it. Probably would have worked better as the lead single than "All for One." I am still hoping for a new one that sounds more like classic Roses though.

Poliopolice, Friday, 10 June 2016 15:55 (seven years ago) link

I doubt that will happen as the main songwriting force of the band has clearly lost it a loooong time ago (and I like some tracks on Second Coming... even the zep extravaganza !).
At this point, it's already a success to release something that's not totally crap.
thinking about the oasis/roses link : I'm not sure but I don't think oasis have ever been tempted by the funk/groove influence of the stone roses.

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 10 June 2016 16:05 (seven years ago) link

This is about a billion times better than "All for One"

STOP KILLING ANIMALS, THEY'RE MINT (DJP), Friday, 10 June 2016 16:06 (seven years ago) link

This song is really bad. The chorus is unbearable.

afriendlypioneer, Friday, 10 June 2016 16:38 (seven years ago) link

and the thing is, somehow, they've managed to repeat it a lot more than in a usual songwriting structure.
it's like 122 chorus and 3 verses.

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 10 June 2016 17:06 (seven years ago) link

maybe what you're calling the verse is the chorus.

Poliopolice, Friday, 10 June 2016 17:22 (seven years ago) link

Excellent songwriting chops there, guys.

xxxpost:

I thought exactly the same about the last Super Furry Animals single, to be fair.

Giving this another listen now and still enjoying it.

Lots of bottom in this, youtube and my imac don't really pick it up tho'. Loving this. 'Songwriting chops' skeptics ... not even going to start with you guys.

jaywbabcock, Saturday, 11 June 2016 14:55 (seven years ago) link

This may grow on me, but for now it seems an improvement on "All for One" only in being merely dull rather than embarrassing.

Freedom, Monday, 13 June 2016 08:30 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, that's about all I'd say for it. I loved them 20 years ago, but now I'm just not interested on what they're likely to do based on these two songs. I'll probably buy the album that emerges out of some sense of misplaced loyalty, but I can't imagine enjoying it massively.

The last one sounded like the Seahorses, this one sounds like Ian Brown's solo stuff. They both sound like pretty much the most predictable things they could have recorded.

Matt DC, Monday, 13 June 2016 15:26 (seven years ago) link

I am confused about why they would put a black bar over someone's eyes and then also post their last name and location.

Poliopolice, Monday, 13 June 2016 15:40 (seven years ago) link

I don't know what people are expecting... do you want them to not sound like themselves just to be "less predictable"?

Poliopolice, Monday, 13 June 2016 15:42 (seven years ago) link

two weeks pass...

soo.... they just played Madison Square Garden? I had no idea they were even coming to the US, looks like the whole set's already up on youtube

Οὖτις, Friday, 1 July 2016 16:09 (seven years ago) link

hahaha, my friend was texting me photos of Ian Brown last night and I was like "WTF are you doing?" and it turns out he was in the front row at this show. I had no idea. Apparently they sounded pretty damn good.

erry red flag (f. hazel), Friday, 1 July 2016 16:41 (seven years ago) link

I watched a bit, Fools Gold sounded good

Οὖτις, Friday, 1 July 2016 16:41 (seven years ago) link

Are there seriously enough NY Stone Roses fans to fill Madison Square Garden?

Matt DC, Friday, 1 July 2016 17:07 (seven years ago) link

Only stateside show. My friend came up from DC to see it, so it was basically all the East Cost Stone Roses fans in attendance.

erry red flag (f. hazel), Friday, 1 July 2016 17:11 (seven years ago) link

They probably could've filled the Hollywood Bowl.

beamish13, Friday, 1 July 2016 17:42 (seven years ago) link

five months pass...

I could use a new Stone Roses album to redeem this shitty year

Οὖτις, Friday, 9 December 2016 17:22 (seven years ago) link

But if it was crap it would make it worse

Cosmic Slop, Friday, 9 December 2016 18:10 (seven years ago) link

iirc shakey liked the new tracks

harold melvin and the bluetones (jim in vancouver), Friday, 9 December 2016 18:11 (seven years ago) link

I did too but was just saying

Cosmic Slop, Friday, 9 December 2016 18:15 (seven years ago) link

well yer both wrong they were muck lol

harold melvin and the bluetones (jim in vancouver), Friday, 9 December 2016 18:16 (seven years ago) link

I just got around to watching Made of Stone (dunno why I waited so long) and it reinstilled some faith in these guys. I like the two new tracks

Οὖτις, Friday, 9 December 2016 18:17 (seven years ago) link

I'd be all over a new Stone Roses record if it leaned towards their more groove/funk-oriented stuff. 'Beautiful Thing' has grown on me a lot.

Working night & day, I tried to stay awake... (Turrican), Friday, 9 December 2016 23:17 (seven years ago) link

six months pass...

... how's that new album coming along?

weird echo of the falsies (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 June 2017 22:34 (six years ago) link

prediction: they won't make it as they probably are at each other's throats and since the two tracks they released were total bobbins odds on the rest is complete dreck.

some more payday gigs then back to being broken up

-_- (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 29 June 2017 22:55 (six years ago) link

I assumed they put out the single, nobody liked it (apart from Shakey), so they thought, "Fuck this for a game of soldiers, let's not bother then".

weird echo of the falsies (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 June 2017 23:01 (six years ago) link

they announced they'd split last week btw, in case yers didn't get the memo.

piscesx, Thursday, 29 June 2017 23:31 (six years ago) link

LOL. Perfect.

weird echo of the falsies (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 June 2017 23:42 (six years ago) link

I find it hard to believe any one could sincerely say All For One is a good song. Internal conflicts aside, it truly sounds career-dismantling

PaulTMA, Friday, 30 June 2017 00:11 (six years ago) link

Well, it's more that people are interpreting some comments Ian Brown made from the stage on the last date of their tour as saying the band were splitting, rather than them coming out and saying "we are splitting" ...

'All For One' wasn't very good, but I liked 'Beautiful Thing'

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Friday, 30 June 2017 00:41 (six years ago) link

I wouldn't imagine it would be easy to stick that song on an album after the beating it took. But the split is probably because Reni is a nightmare

PaulTMA, Friday, 30 June 2017 09:15 (six years ago) link

one year passes...

Ian Brown ‎– First World Problems (From the album "Ripples")

So, I guess Ian's given up w/band.

Mark G, Friday, 26 October 2018 14:35 (five years ago) link

The guy who had to fix Ian's vocals on this track deserves a medal.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 26 October 2018 18:30 (five years ago) link

uh this is "Loaded"

frogbs, Friday, 26 October 2018 18:41 (five years ago) link

Fool’s Gold is one of those love it or hate it songs huh? There’s another thread on ILM posted upthread where everyone seems to hate it passionately.

I didn’t care much for it but I fell in love with it being young and dancing to it in Barcelona’s Sidecar. I was only an hour or so in there.. maybe it was the night, maybe the dj, maybe I was too young to know any better, but the songs he played all felt very exciting to me despite knowing them beforehand.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 26 October 2018 19:00 (five years ago) link

He also played This Charming Man by the Smiths. whichj remind me: This might sound like total bollocks it to many in here but I think I prefer the Stone Roses debut to any of The Smiths albums. It rocks in ways the Smiths never did for me and I don’t care for Morrisey as a lyricist either way.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 26 October 2018 19:05 (five years ago) link

Fool's Gold is all-time great

Οὖτις, Friday, 26 October 2018 19:46 (five years ago) link

It is, but an all-time great track that I'm not sure I ever need to hear again at this point.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 26 October 2018 20:14 (five years ago) link

i came to love the s.t, but i was disappointed when i first bought it and there was nothing as righteously pure-groove and melody-less as "fools gold"

brimstead, Friday, 26 October 2018 22:05 (five years ago) link

I never, ever get tired of the s/t album.

Yerac, Friday, 26 October 2018 22:09 (five years ago) link

i was listening to the SR debut over and over in the car for a few days last month and it still sounded just as great as ever. i've always had the weird US version that ends w/ "fools gold" and i kinda can't imagine it not ending that way. i might love "what the world is waiting for" even more though.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 26 October 2018 22:14 (five years ago) link

U.S. version has 7" version "elephant stone" too which is crucial
