Rick Astley, my kryptonite

Rick Astley is the singlemost inexcusable famous anus who sounds like he is intentionally mocking his own horribly queer songs with his gurgley deep-throated delivery. What's with him and why was he ever discovered? Is he the son of the president of some record label?

Never gonna give it up, always gonna bring you down.. big black voice in the body of Howdy Doo-oo-oody

Brian MacDonald, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Holy shit, Brian! That make me fucking crack up! That was so fuckin' funny I'm gonna wake up my girlfriend and make her read it. Oh wait, I just did wake her up with my howling.

Nude spock, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Has he put out something recently? If not, why are you getting all worked up over a relatively insignificant 80s pop singer no one talks about anymore?

sundar subramanian, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Worked up? I'm not worked up. He's a funny joke, ha, ha, to me. I was wondering what the consensus of him is here. He makes me cringe and go "ahhh" but I'm not worked up. You still hear bits of his wonderful music on television quite regularly cuz my powers were weakened just last night as his rotten tunes found their way into my ear canal. You got a problem, spanky?

Sometimes, if I'm in a dance club and I'm getting tipsy, I'll make a point of embarassing myself even further by doing that little roundabout dancey thing he did with his hands. It makes people happy.

He has a single called "Sleeping" in the lower reaches of the German charts. I hope he doesn't try it anywhere else ...

rick rocked...his hair...was so...hairy!

Geoff, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Curious example in that here was a major- league 80s producer presented with a major league 80s voice and yet — tho some classicists get overexcited by said voice (inc.Waterman, who is become the Mr Dadrock of the FlimsyDisko school) the combo just doesn't even faintly cut it, in retrospect. Perhaps becuz SAW were only evah superlatively great when they worked w.foax who others wd likely have overlooked: eg Mel&Kim, "FLM"? Rick has an obviously fantastic voice in a white soulbro stylee and not the *faintest* idea what to do with it (or seemingly much interest exploring to discover same): I kinda like that he retired from fame out of boredom and misery ([insert countless names here] PLEASE COPY). If he went in Scott Walker direction we'd idolise him — but he won't.

Still at least he ain't a Buckley.

Now theres a good reason why that little white boy had such a big black voice. His 'voice' was really the voice of Fab Morvan.

Dude, I like "Never Gonna Give You UP"

Hey, now we're talking. Jeff, at least.

I can't believe Mark S. dislikes Rick!

Nicole, Thursday, 20 March 2008 00:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, like he says, it's not the voice he dislikes, just how it was used. The Scott comparison's an interesting one to make, trying to imagine Mr. Walker basically not doing much more than the first era of Walker Brothers stuff, say.

It's called the "rick-roll".

I just had a vision of Astley singing Eighth Wonder's "I'm Not Scared."
