Can't wait to see them drop two songs and one album into our year-end polls, because tradition.

I rather like this track, btw.

Dud.

You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 15:03 (nine years ago) link

It's strange that they have this reputation of being a band that always places in the end of year polls. Two out of their five albums didn't make the lists.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 15:44 (nine years ago) link

alexis taylor's solo album could barely have been duller

this is a lot better than that

I heard the whole album last night, so it's either "out there" or will be soon. As someone who's always been mostly on the fence about Hot Chip (often with favorable inclinations), this is THEIR album. They finally got everything right.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 1 April 2015 21:02 (nine years ago) link

Really? Very excited to hear hear you say that. I thought their last two albums were where they got everything right. Both a big step up from their earlier albums.

Going by these two songs it sounds like it's going to be quite a dark album.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 1 April 2015 21:06 (nine years ago) link

Too many hears in that sentence obviously. I'm just exited.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 1 April 2015 21:07 (nine years ago) link

i'm calling it now:

#57 on the top 77

gr8080, Wednesday, 1 April 2015 21:20 (nine years ago) link

I'm surprised at JF's enthusiasm. Listened to it a few times and promptly forgot about it. Nothing even gets close to the high points of the last two

Number None, Wednesday, 1 April 2015 21:26 (nine years ago) link

Yeah I've heard mixed reports. I think it leaked last week or something.

bae sremmurd (monotony), Wednesday, 1 April 2015 23:06 (nine years ago) link

Yeah it's definitely out there now.

It's really good and has lots of beautiful moments. Not quite as brilliant as the last two albums but very good all the way through. The two singles might be my least favourite songs on the album.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 1 April 2015 23:16 (nine years ago) link

Maybe what you guys like about Hot Chip is what's kept me lukewarm. I really like this one though. OPINIONS!

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 April 2015 04:31 (nine years ago) link

i really like the name.. "hot chip". it's a good band name.

brimstead, Thursday, 2 April 2015 04:54 (nine years ago) link

Need you Now sounds great on first listen, cool video too.

ewar woowar (or something), Thursday, 2 April 2015 08:02 (nine years ago) link

Very into the new album now. So many lovely little moments. The last minute of Our Love Is The Future is just so beautiful, one of the best things they've done. White Wine and Chicken has replaced Brothers as their corniest moment. I can't help but love it.

If One Life Stand was the kind of Hot Chip you wanted then this album will probably appeal to you.

Surprised how little attention Why Make Sense? got on here. Looks like they might not make the ILM albums list this year after all.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 29 May 2015 03:07 (eight years ago) link

It's mostly pretty good! A few duds, as usual. The bookends are killer.

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Friday, 29 May 2015 04:09 (eight years ago) link

It's excellent, but in typical Hot Chip style, the running order could do with some attention. 'Separate' could easily be a highlight of the album, instead they bury it on a bonus EP, for example.

matt h, Friday, 29 May 2015 09:25 (eight years ago) link

I listened to it once and haven't had the urge to go back.

Matt DC, Friday, 29 May 2015 11:23 (eight years ago) link

Likewise. In fact, mid-listen I forgot that "In Our Heads" existed and went back to that album instead. "One Life Stand" is still my go-to, but neither the new one nor the last one are bad at all, so I'll be sure to give them more rotation. I did notice that Hot Chip doesn't seem to be touring as much, at least not outside the US festival circuit. Maybe if I'd seen them live more recently I'd be more in love with the newer stuff.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 29 May 2015 12:06 (eight years ago) link

Massively underwhelmed on first listen but it gets a lot better, though still not great. I was really getting into it until I played In Our Heads again and realised what a step down it was.

Continue your brooding monologue (Re-Make/Re-Model), Friday, 29 May 2015 12:59 (eight years ago) link

Yeah I'm not too keen on this either. I thought "Huarache Lights" was a pretty weak single too.

tayto fan (Michael B), Friday, 29 May 2015 13:05 (eight years ago) link

Definitely a step down from the last two albums but still really enjoyable. I like every song on their but it could do with a few more big moments like Let Be He Him or Flutes. I think the Pitchfork review was about right when they said it's the fourth best Hot Chip album.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 29 May 2015 13:52 (eight years ago) link

Huarache Lights, Started Right and the title track are the keepers for me. KP OTM about the lack of big moments though. It's all happening within a narrow bandwidth. And much though I love the band I've never quite come around to Alexis's voice but I love Joe's. In Our Heads had the perfect Alexis:Joe balance. This one doesn't.

Continue your brooding monologue (Re-Make/Re-Model), Friday, 29 May 2015 13:54 (eight years ago) link

Just read the Pitchfork review. Nails it.

Continue your brooding monologue (Re-Make/Re-Model), Friday, 29 May 2015 13:56 (eight years ago) link

It also moves towards a slightly sparser sound than the last record and that really doesn't do Alexis any favours.

Matt DC, Friday, 29 May 2015 14:11 (eight years ago) link

It's weird to have a band where I love the songwriting and sound so much that I'm a fan despite disliking the lead singer (the voice, not the person).

Need You Know is a banger. Highlight of this one for me.

Now not Know

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 25 July 2015 20:58 (eight years ago) link

Love this band, but still haven't given the latest album much time, in no small part because seeing the Need You Now name immediately makes me think of the Cut Copy song.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 25 July 2015 21:01 (eight years ago) link

No, if anything it sounds like Moby being remixed by Delorean. Listen to it. Here it is:

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 25 July 2015 21:38 (eight years ago) link

Oh, I've heard it, just haven't really gone back to the album. I'd still rather listen to Cut Copy's "Need You Now."

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 26 July 2015 13:00 (eight years ago) link

I still really like the album but I was obsessed with One Life Stand and In Our Heads when they came out and it just hasn't been the same this time round. It needs a few more Flutes/Let Me Be Him/Don't Deny Your Heart moments.

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 26 July 2015 14:33 (eight years ago) link

lol i already get cut copy and hot chip confused as it is, this is just going to make it worse

D-30 (gr8080), Monday, 27 July 2015 14:14 (eight years ago) link

like just now i was like "wtf is moka talking about, 'need you now' is like 4 years old"

Nobody interested in the Joe Goddard album? Last Hot Chip album was a bit disappointing, but this is up there with with One Life Stand in the Hot Chip canon.

Dan Worsley, Monday, 24 April 2017 14:29 (seven years ago) link

i just put this on out of curiosity and i love it

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 24 April 2017 14:34 (seven years ago) link

Yeah it's great, expanding the roster of singers was a very smart move.

Goddard's "Electric Lines" is great, hope it doesn't get totally lost/ignored in the infinite shuffle.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 29 August 2017 17:35 (six years ago) link

Definitely one of my most listened to albums of the year so far

After the high of Goddard's album, Alexis Taylor's new one is something of a disappointment.

Back to being classic based on first listen, lush second summer of love vibe to it.

There’s a rather clever narrative video too, but doesn’t foreground the track, though will be the one to get attention.*

Dan Worsley, Friday, 5 April 2019 07:43 (five years ago) link

That's a great video, as good as "I Feel Better."

I should relisten to "Why Make Sense," I don't remember a thing about it, though Joe Goddard's last album was great.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 5 April 2019 11:43 (five years ago) link

I saw Hot Chip at Glastonbury after Why Make Sense came out. IIRC they didn't play a single song from it.

Matt DC, Friday, 5 April 2019 11:47 (five years ago) link

I could have sworn the last couple of times through town here they only played festivals, so maybe they have a sequenced "hits" set?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 5 April 2019 11:57 (five years ago) link

WMS' title track is one of their best songs imho

Simon H., Friday, 5 April 2019 12:07 (five years ago) link

My exceptions were weirdly low for the new album considering they were one of my favourite bands going during the One Life Stand/In Our Heads eras, but I'm really enjoying it. The second half in particular is so strong.
