Singles out this week:

Nick Drake : Magic

So where you ? Some will say ooh it's tight. Not me, I never liked Abba that much.

Nick Drake.

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

New version with Reebop on percussion? But he's dead too. Do you mean unreleased version?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Love em both but Nicky gets my vote

lukey (Lukey G), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"new mix" of "Rider on the Wheel"? Umm...was this necessary?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I dislike both of them.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

So anyway, I just bought the Nick Drake single (CD): very nice too.

I wonder about

1) Why would anyone want "waterloo" as a single on a CD, when they will have this already on Greatest Hits CD's (Usually track one, yeah?) or is "watch out" (the b-side) a real rarity on CD?
2) The cd single for abba has a facsimile label on polydor, but they was on epic at the time (this may not have a bearing on sales, true)
3) What does the label on the nick drake 7" look like? the sleeve of the CD looks like an old single in a cardboard sleeve with pvc interior, but the CD itself is a fairly dull black label affair.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

it's your "standard" late 60s/early 70s pink island 45 label

the "authentic" "tear" on the "sleeve" pisses me off some

I don't know Waterloo-era ABBA that well so I don't know how rare "Watch Out" is.

I like ABBA more than Nick Drake - their treatment of loneliness speaks to me more often and more deeply. But I do like Nick Drake and will buy the reissued tat.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Is the B-side on the Nick Drake single a new song? or a new version of an old song?

Jonathan (Jonathan), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I would have thought this would be the most divise Taking Sides yet, but it seems not to be so.

I don't like Abba and I have enough Nick Drake to last me forever, so I will simply say 'meh' and leave.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Are we talking about the releases or just taking sides in general?

If we're talking about picking one of the two bands with respect to the whole of each act's output, Nick Drake comes out ahead - his albums are just more consistent. ABBA, on the other hand, are undoubtedly the superior singles band.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

(seeing as how this is Nick Drake's first single, well yeah but anyway)

"Magic" is from the new 'rarities' anthologylike album.
"Northern Sky" is the original version from "Becoming more good" or whatever it's called.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 08:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I note that the local HMV has a few Nick CDsingles in its alpha sorted singles section, and no abba ones. (i.e. they didn't have any as opposed to they all sold out)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't imagine Nick Drake winning Eurovision.

A better TS might be the new ND comp vs. Agnetha's covers album. Have tried to get into the latter but can't really. I was looking forward to a Nordic pop response to My Beauty but it doesn't work for me - very competent, and the choice of songs is pretty OTM, but I don't hear much of Agnetha in it, can't connect the pain sung about in the songs with the pain in her life.

As for the ND comp - compilers, you wouldn't let him lie, would you?

look at the size of that prescription bottle!

*next morning*

whoops, i should have done shouldn't i?

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 20 May 2004 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm probably the only one, but I do keep expecting a breakbeat to kick in when I play the "Magic" single. (Basically, its acapella singing with an orchestra backing, so not actually acapella at all...)

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 20 May 2004 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Where's the Wiley remix?

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 20 May 2004 07:46 (twenty-two years ago)

So, Number 32 for Nick, number 20 for abba.

Still, nick wins.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 24 May 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
.. and his next chartbound sound is "River Man", to tie in with a brand new "best of"...

(DVD single anybody?)
