Less than you'd think.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 17 May 2004 02:03 (nineteen years ago) link

ballpark figure, Ian.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 17 May 2004 02:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I knew the first album was a huge hit and all, but who knew how many royalties they'd earn?

Aren't they still huge in Russia for some reason?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 May 2004 02:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Probably $200. But I bet I'd come out of it liking some Asia other than "Heat of the Moment" (which I already like.)

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 17 May 2004 02:07 (nineteen years ago) link

I was kind enough to leave out the Japanese editions with bonus tracks and the 15 compilations that they have mustered up over the years.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 17 May 2004 02:08 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd say $150--enough money to buy the weed required to keep me baked throughout.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 17 May 2004 02:09 (nineteen years ago) link

Looks like they stopped being able to afford Roger Dean some time back:

And the set list for that one! It's from the first album tour, and how compelling a set list is this (answer: not very):

Time Again - 5:42
One Step Closer - 4:28
Without You (Howe/Wetton) - 5:50
Ancient - 4:10
Claps - 6:34
Midnight Sun (Downes/Wetton) - 7:03
Only Time Will Tell - 4:35
Cutting It Fine - 5:53
Keyboard Solo - 4:16
Wildest Dreams - 5:46
Here Comes the Feeling - 12:42
Sole Survivor - 6:06
Heat of the Moment - 5:31

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 May 2004 02:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Ooh, man, closing with the big hit. They knew how to work a crowd.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 May 2004 02:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Video Killed The Radio Star!!!

I thought only shitty pop-punk bands were allowed to cover that song. I would like to hear this.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 17 May 2004 02:39 (nineteen years ago) link

I thought only shitty pop-punk bands were allowed to cover that song.

Er, well, to tendentiously explain my reference: Geoff Downes, keyboardist for the band, was the other guy in Buggles besides Trevor Horn.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 May 2004 02:41 (nineteen years ago) link

I think the real question is how much would I pay!

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 17 May 2004 02:41 (nineteen years ago) link

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 17 May 2004 02:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Maybe he was in every band.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 May 2004 02:46 (nineteen years ago) link

The Live In Philadelphia album is at the Chestnut Cabaret which is kinda sad for Asia cuz it probably only held, like, 500 people. Maybe more when it was packed. I saw great Feelies shows there. And also one of the worst shows I have ever seen in my life: The Tom Tom Club.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 17 May 2004 02:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Don't you have that Bruce Wooley & The Camera Club album, Ned?

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 17 May 2004 02:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Can't say I do. Should I?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 May 2004 02:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, Camera Club was Bruce Wooley ("the third Buggle"). (I mean, I'm assuming that Downes wasn't in that band. I don't think he was.)

Tim Ellison, Monday, 17 May 2004 02:52 (nineteen years ago) link

HA! I just bought that Bruce Woolley and the Camera Club album at a garage sale yesterday, and the version of "Video Killed the Radio Star" on it is very similar to the Buggles version.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 17 May 2004 02:53 (nineteen years ago) link

There are few things I wouldn't do for a case of cola, and this is no exception.

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Monday, 17 May 2004 02:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't know the complete history of the song. The Camera Club version was first though, wasn't it?

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 17 May 2004 02:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes it was.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 17 May 2004 02:57 (nineteen years ago) link

(Also, music trivia fans may be surprised to note that Matthew Seliman of the Soft Boys AND Thomas Dolby both appeared on this album as ahem session players.)

Seligman, buh.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 17 May 2004 03:14 (nineteen years ago) link

It sure as hell is a brilliant song.

Tim Ellison, Monday, 17 May 2004 03:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Ever notice how the melody of "Heat of the Moment" is quite similar to the melody of "Video Killed the Radio Star?"

Tim Ellison, Monday, 17 May 2004 03:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Going by that poster from the show in Philadelphia, when did the singer guy from Zodiac Mindwarp join Asia?

earlnash, Monday, 17 May 2004 05:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I searched slsk for "Video Killed the Radio Star" and came up wth versions by Radiohead, Cyndi Lauper, Ben Folds Five, Presidents of the USA (this is the only one I knew about beforehand), Pixies, Erasure, Violent Femmes, Flaming Lips, and a whole bunch more! But not Asia!
Who knew?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 17 May 2004 06:49 (nineteen years ago) link

I have the first one and play it on occasion.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 17 May 2004 10:54 (nineteen years ago) link

> Camera Club was Bruce Wooley ("the third Buggle")

Although, curiously, it's a young Hans Zimmer who cameos as a third Buggle at the end of the VKTRS video (he's the slightly uncomfortable-looking guy standing in front of their huge modular synthesizer).

Palomino (Palomino), Monday, 17 May 2004 11:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Actually, Geoff Downes looks uneasy too. Probably everybody but the little girl was freaked out by being filmed in the company of somebody as gobsmackingly nerdy-looking as Trevor Horn. (Dear God, those glasses! That hair! Those stack-heeled silver boots!)

Palomino (Palomino), Monday, 17 May 2004 11:48 (nineteen years ago) link

I would listen to a substantial chunk of those for free out of curiosity, but I can kinda use the money, so let's say $200 for the lot.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 May 2004 19:50 (nineteen years ago) link

There are a couple of bootlegs floating around of the Drama tour which list "Video Killed The Radio Star", but it was just a Downes piano solo version of it. The Asia one might be similar

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 17 May 2004 19:50 (nineteen years ago) link

If I had like a week to do it then I'd go for $100. If I had to listen to all of them in one sitting then $250

How about all at once, Zaireeka-style?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 May 2004 19:53 (nineteen years ago) link

ya know what else is cool about that live album with "Video" is that it also includes a version of the Wetton-sung King Crimson tune "Book Of Saturday". I'd listen to that for free!

Napoli, Italy (February 26, 2010) – ASIA, rock’s first important super-group of the 80s - featuring members from Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, King Crimson and The Buggles – will release Omega, its highly anticipated new album of original material. The record is due in the spring of 2010 on Frontiers Records.

Geoffrey Downes, Steve Howe, Carl Palmer and John Wetton, the four original Asia members, reunited in 2006, twenty-three years after all four had last played together. The much publicised reunion resulted in highly successful world tours, a double live LP and DVD (entitled Fantasia: Live In Tokyo) and an acclaimed studio album Phoenix in 2008 which debuted at number 73 in the Billboard charts in the USA and entered the top 100 in several European countries.

Begun during the summer 2009, the writing and recording sessions of Omega, immediately showed inspiration and good feelings. “We were looking to create something different with Omega,” says keyboardist Geoff Downes. “Of course, the sound of the 4 band members of Asia will always have a certain hallmark when we play together. That's a given. But we approached the song writing with a mind to getting a degree of variety into these compositions. Hence, you will hear areas of textures where arguably we have never gone before.”

Add lead vocalist/bassist/guitarist John Wetton: “Asia is an English prog-rock band with a pop edge, always has been, and hopefully always will be. Accessible, melodic, anthemic songs with great playing, luxuriating in a bed of lush orchestration, with lyrics that strike a sympathetic chord in even the most cynical heart. There you have it; Omega is a themed album in Asia's fine tradition, without the millstone of a concept.”

Steve Howe adds that “the whole recording process has been inspiring and rewarding, and I’m very excited about the result”. “I would say these are all strong individual songs” says drummer Carl Palmer. “It was a very smooth experience, and arguably one of our best records.”

For the first time since the debut album, ASIA worked with an outside producer, Mike Paxman (Uriah Heep, Status Quo) who managed to create a truly special sounding album with the highs, lows and lots of dynamics. He helped the band to put together a tapestry of sound, which demonstrates the rich strata of Asia's music. Paxman was able to achieve this through the songs which spun real stories of actual events and experiences in locations around the globe. “The songs always have a message, hopefully positive,” says Wetton. “My songs are almost always autobiographical, so there is hope and experience in there, too. The lyric will never leave you on a negative thought. “

As with the most popular of ASIA releases, the cover art specifically designed for the project by acclaimed artist Roger Dean. The concept of the title (Omega) and the 'Year of the Tiger' referencing of the cover art underline the fact that this is real Asia. John Wetton explains: “The title 'Omega', as any fan of the band will tell you is 'very Asia' (as is the album, by the way). It no more means 'final' than 'Alpha' means 'the first' (which it wasn't). It's a great sounding/looking word, and a bookend to 'Alpha'. In many ways, musically and conceptually, the two albums share commonality.”

“We are embarking on our European tour around the middle of April, then straight in to Japan for the middle of May” says Downes. “It's going to be fun working out the new set list because obviously we have another album under our belt now with Omega.”

After touring Europe and Japan, ASIA will embark on a US tour late in the summer of 2010.

I didn't realize until just now that at some point this band completely split in two with one version (Asia Featuring John Payne) having little-to-no connection to the actual band (I guess John Payne wound up owning part of the name because he stuck around with Downes on about a dozen of the listed albums no-one ever bought)

anyway now I'm listening to tracks from Phoenix and they're ok, you know, for Asia. Probably better than anything since the debut.

From Wiki:

Asia featuring John Payne

Payne, Govan and Schellen continued working together after Downes' departure for the aforementioned reunion. This included continuing work on what had been planned as the next Asia album, Architect of Time. They began to work under the name GPS with Ryo Okumoto of Spock's Beard on keys. Their debut release, Window to the Soul (2006), included material developed for Architect of Time.[11]

In May 2007, Payne, Govan and Schellen announced the new band name, "Asia featuring John Payne", adding Erik Norlander on keys. The name had been contractually agreed between Payne, Downes, Wetton, Howe and Palmer on the 9th of May 2006.[12] The first release under this name at the end of 2007 was a live recording of the late 2005 Asia line-up of Downes, Payne, Govan and Schellen, entitled Extended Versions in the US and Scandinavia in the UK.

In June 2008, the band has announced the release of an EP entitled "Military Man" with royalties being donated to the USO.[13] The band are also planning to release a completed Architect of Time,[14] with all songs written by Payne and Norlander. The band are touring in 2009 under the Asia Featuring John Payne name, and currently playing festivals and small venues, performing songs from the entire history of Asia, including "Heat of the Moment".[6] Govan was replaced by Mitch Perry and North American touring has continued through 2010 (Govan remains a part of side-project GPS). Perry is a seasoned session musician with over two decades experience touring with major acts including Cher and Michael Schenker.[12] Meanwhile, Payne, Govan, and Schellen are also continuing work as GPS, while Schellen is also recording with Circa.[15]

In late 2008 they signed a three album deal with Sony Music Japan in said country and a deal in the States and elsewhere will be announced soon.[16] A studio album, originally called Architect of Time (the name ultimately used for a Payne side project instead) and now Americana [17] is underway and expected for release later in 2011. A live album, Extended Versions or Scandinavia by Asia Featuring John Payne, was released in fall 2007, drawn from a December 2005 show in Finland with Downes, Schellen, Payne and Govan.

I'm still confused. I guess these guys were in the last progression of the Asia name before Downes reunited with all the o.g. members? John Payne must be a complete narcissist to go around with a band named "Asia featuring John Payne".

Johnny Fever, Monday, 6 June 2011 04:49 (twelve years ago) link

Oh, I guess I didn't realize he'd been the singer since Wetton left in 1992. I guess the band's as much his as anyone's at this point, but still...Asia featuring John Payne isn't Asia at all.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 6 June 2011 04:55 (twelve years ago) link

my downeaster ilxor (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 02:57 (twelve years ago) link

I want to defend them even though I don't know their catalog that well. A power quartet based around John Wetton writing pop-rock songs with Geoff Downes and STEVE HOWE AND CARL PALMER ROUNDING OUT THE LINEUP? Just as a prospect, that is awesome.

And like I said, really liked that feature track from the last album. It is classic Asia.

Music Enthusiast: Your source for Queensryche news and analysis in 2014

I think Asia, in a way, might not have been served well by their name and by the Roger Dean covers. Both of those things are actually quite charming, but it creates an impression that maybe differs from the reality of Wetton/Downes as songwriters. Their songs strike me as being very kind of human. Down to earth.

The songs from Astra on this list sound really nice. Geoff Downes is seemingly always delightful to hear.

timellison, Thursday, 24 July 2014 06:08 (nine years ago) link

That's not to say that branding themselves as something more human and down to earth would have worked better. There IS something "Asia" and Roger Dean about their music.
