We've been together
For so long
You know the rules,
And so do I
(so do I)

Eamon wishes he could be him.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 May 2004 23:42 (sixteen years ago) link

I mentioned him in a review on Stylus today! Classic for the big hit, dud for everything else, classic for basically turning his back on the industry because he couldn't be bothered.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 14 May 2004 23:44 (sixteen years ago) link

better than Kylie Minogue

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 14 May 2004 23:54 (sixteen years ago) link

not saying much there

de, Saturday, 15 May 2004 00:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Slow down Kylie Minogue's early stuff and she sounds like Rick Astley.

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 15 May 2004 01:00 (sixteen years ago) link

they were both produced by SAW.

disco nihilist, Saturday, 15 May 2004 01:02 (sixteen years ago) link

the 'astley shuffle' is still in my dance repertoire today

the surface noise of psychotic badassery (electricsound), Saturday, 15 May 2004 01:03 (sixteen years ago) link

What I mean is KYLIE'S VOICE sounds a bit like RICK ASTLEY'S VOICE when slowed down. Although speeding Rick up doesn't make him sound like KM.

Anyway, he would be classic but "Cry For Help" was shit, so dud.

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 15 May 2004 01:08 (sixteen years ago) link

I almost wrote that "Strong Strong Man" was alright. That god for your cross-post, edward o.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 15 May 2004 01:09 (sixteen years ago) link

I've just realised how hilarious it would be to slow "Red Blooded Woman" down to see if IT sounds like Rick. The last time I tried this on a Kylie record was "Some Kind Of Bliss", so something off Light Years or Fever might still work.

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 15 May 2004 01:14 (sixteen years ago) link

Classic for the hits. 'Never Gonna Give You Up' and 'Together Forever' are slick pop glory that I'll always praise, despite the endless ridicule.

derrick (derrick), Saturday, 15 May 2004 01:52 (sixteen years ago) link

i own two of his albums. please explain.

Dave M. (rotten03), Saturday, 15 May 2004 12:43 (sixteen years ago) link

one from the 'oh wow i assumed he was black' file

'Never Gonna Give You Up' and 'Together Forever' are slick pop glory that I'll always praise, despite the endless ridicule.

It's funny, I just downloaded these two the other night because I was thinking about how ridiculously underrated they were.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Saturday, 15 May 2004 12:51 (sixteen years ago) link

What's funny is that they're almost the same song, but it's a good enough song that I don't mind it twice over.

derrick (derrick), Saturday, 15 May 2004 18:54 (sixteen years ago) link

I was gonna quote the Nick Lowe song that mocked Rick, then I realized I'd rather dig up and listen to one of Astley's "ghastly" hits than Nick's "humorous" ditty. Funny...

lovebug starski, Saturday, 15 May 2004 19:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Would anybody consider Rick Astley a mod?

sexyDancer, Saturday, 15 May 2004 22:30 (sixteen years ago) link

THAT'S what he looks like? File him under the club of "singers you thought were hulking black dudes" (Michael McDonald, president.)

Prude (Prude), Sunday, 16 May 2004 00:52 (sixteen years ago) link

'Never Gonna Give You Up' and 'Together Forever' are slick pop glory that I'll always praise, despite the endless ridicule.

Bingo. Fact: I've heard these songs at almost every wedding I've ever been to. Extra special fact: I look forward to weddings because I get to hear these two songs.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Sunday, 16 May 2004 01:22 (sixteen years ago) link

"singers you thought were hulking black dudes"

i was also blown away when i first him speak speak--he's white AND english?!?!

one of the first tapes i ever owned--classic!

waxyjax (waxyjax), Sunday, 16 May 2004 02:30 (sixteen years ago) link

I have a cousin who contends that when sung simultaniously, Together Forever and Never Gonna Give You Up harmonize quite nicely. Go ahead, give it a try.

camanda (camanda), Sunday, 16 May 2004 16:43 (sixteen years ago) link

It's funny, I just downloaded these two the other night because I was thinking about how ridiculously underrated they were.

It's where the SAW hit factory was in excelsis, I think.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:05 (sixteen years ago) link

in high school, we used to call him "action jackson" b/c we first heard "never gonna give you up" the same week that action jackson came out.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:26 (sixteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...
i've got the vh1/blender "50 worst songs" thing on and the only reasons they give for "never gonna give you up" being bad are that rick astley (a) isn't black (b) looks like too much of "a nice guy." go figure!

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 23:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Thats ong reminds me of oklahoma.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 23:45 (sixteen years ago) link

My friend Jackie, my friend Allyson, and your humble narrator finished eating a late-night meal at Gorky's in Los Angeles one fine evening circa 1986. We dallied over coffee, as one did at Gorky's, and then left together to find our cars. On the way, we noticed lighting rigs and a sprayed-down-with-water street off to the left, about two blocks from Gorky's headed toward downtown. Intrigued, we sat on some steps across the street from all the we're-gonna-film-something apparatus. Allasudden music comes real loud outta some speakers and a guy in an overcoat (it's quite warm, mind you) comes strolling down the street lipsynching as a camera backpedals before him:

My heart starts breaking
When I think of making a plan
to let you go

We watched until there was a clear break in the action (i.e. after they'd filmed this sequence a dozen times), then applauded. He turned to us, smiled, and gave a full gentleman's bow. Jackie and Allyson pronounced him quite obviously of better stock than your humble narrator, and asked your humble narrator mockingly why he could not be more like Rick.

My efforts in this area have met with varying success.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 23:54 (sixteen years ago) link

he was cute

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 00:29 (sixteen years ago) link

In the car, I recently listened to nothing but "Never Gonna Give You Up" on repeat from the NY-CT border all the way to Amherst, MA. It played maybe thirty times in a row. I guess I was just in the mood.

Otis Wheeler (Otis Wheeler), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 01:01 (sixteen years ago) link

I was gonna say dud, but after John's story, I gotta go with "kinda classic."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 07:37 (sixteen years ago) link

When I tell my friends about the Rick Astley/Mountain Goats connection, they gonna insist I'm tripping.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 21:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Rick Astley came up in conversation at a friends yesterday, now this thread. Far from thinking he was black, after hearing 'Together, Forever' I thought he was a woman.

Those two famous songs suck.

Sasha (sgh), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 23:44 (sixteen years ago) link

at the next FAP ask me to do my Rick Astley impression!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 3 June 2004 00:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Genius. Are we going to try for a Dizzee/Streets FAP?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 June 2004 00:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Astley is the end of the empire. Glorious.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 12 August 2005 15:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh hell, I'll defend Cry For Help.

PappaWheelie II, Friday, 12 August 2005 15:44 (fifteen years ago) link

That was alright. I'll vouch for the forgotten "It Would Take A Strong, Strong Man" and "She Wants To Dance With Me."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 12 August 2005 16:50 (fifteen years ago) link

His delivery on the chorus of "Strong, Strong Man" approaches Bolton-like levels of earnestness and need...

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 12 August 2005 17:43 (fifteen years ago) link

More like Rick Asslick!

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 12 August 2005 17:56 (fifteen years ago) link

ok, i do like "never gonna give you up" -- always have, and still do.

mr. astley still looks like a prat, though!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 13 August 2005 06:02 (fifteen years ago) link

'together forever' was what came out of my casio keyboard when you pressed the demo button

So yeah.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 15 March 2007 14:12 (thirteen years ago) link

His version of "Vincent" was not as good as the original.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 15 March 2007 14:12 (thirteen years ago) link

I heard "She Wants to Dance With Me" a few weeks ago at the market.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 15 March 2007 14:45 (thirteen years ago) link

My favorite thing about this song is that The Timelords use it as an example of the ultimate pop song in their Guide To Having A Number One Hit The Easy Way.

Basically, the genius of the song is that it condenses what every woman in the world wants to hear a man say in like 25 syllables.

Display Name, Thursday, 15 March 2007 19:53 (thirteen years ago) link

I like the fact that he started out as a teaboy in the PWL studios and was allowed to sing on the Ferry Aid record "to gain work experience." These days he'd have to go on The X-Factor.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 16 March 2007 08:55 (thirteen years ago) link

"Whenever You're Ready" was OK, but I still don't see anything essential about him.

The creative highlight of the PWL era was "Showing Out" by Mel & Kim.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 16 March 2007 11:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Astley was the master of the both-feet-nailed-to-the-floor style of dancing.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 16 March 2007 11:33 (thirteen years ago) link

So true.

The other dancers in his videos made up for it. That bartender - shazam! When he was polishing those glasses and the beat infected him, who knew he had that kind of stuff up his sleeve?

I now ache to create a mixtape with Rick Astley on one side and Swing Out Sister on the other. If those two ever went on tour together it would be HUGE.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 16 March 2007 11:55 (thirteen years ago) link

They might just about fill the front row.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 16 March 2007 12:10 (thirteen years ago) link

WITH FECKLESS ASPIRATIONAL JOY.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 16 March 2007 12:52 (thirteen years ago) link

With forty-year-old nostalgics from High Wycombe.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 16 March 2007 13:34 (thirteen years ago) link

I truly can not even conceive of what Rick Astley looks like at age 40. The idea is like the exact marker and limit of my imagination, the vanishing point of my speculative powers.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 16 March 2007 13:54 (thirteen years ago) link

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mDsCUOGCS0
aside from the hair, he hasn't changed at all

Fetchboy, Friday, 16 March 2007 14:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Wow! Strip away the SAW MIDI production and this becomes a disco classic!!!

Astley looks and sounds great. Bonus points for throwing in "Together Forever" and "I Should Be So Lucky" (which is an obvious nod to the Astley-is-Minogue-is-Astley rumours) at the end.

Tantrum The Cat, Friday, 16 March 2007 15:09 (thirteen years ago) link

A couple years ago I gave my (composition major) friend a Rick Astley compilation for her birthday after she confessed her undying love for his music. She said she used to rock out in her room to his songs. Since then, I have been trying to imagine what it would mean to rock out to Rick Astley.

The crowd loves it unironically.

frogbs, Friday, 19 February 2021 21:56 (one week ago) link

like a Korean sweatshop drawing all the frames inbetween the key poses sent by The Simpsons animators, a computer reads all the digitised frames of the video, and then "draws" extra frames in between all of them

in order to make it look dogshit

stilt in the wings (sic), Friday, 19 February 2021 22:01 (one week ago) link

I mean obviously I know this video but I don't believe I've ever really watched this video until now, with all of attention focused in its direction and with the music turned off and just really intently observing what transpires on the screen. It's really, really fucking funny, pretty much all the way through.

The Mandolinrainian (Old Lunch), Friday, 19 February 2021 22:43 (one week ago) link

Yeah same, never watched it before. I liked it! I thought the crystal clear remaster worked well for the bright, clean aesthetic of the video, too.
