Can't Hardly Wait was like a cultural moment for a lot of people. I remember a guy in freshman year of college who put it on the stereo at a party, leaned back in his seat and exhaled in a satisfied manner, looking around to see if anyone was feelin' it. Ahhhh.

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, and from the Can't Hardly Wait Sndtrk review (emphasis added obv):

"Fire It Up" - Busta Rhymes - the beat is steady and and sometimes its hard not to start bobbing your head!

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:23 (nineteen years ago) link

No, wait - Ned is totally Adam Curry.

Frightening thought -- but he was the first computer nerd at the place, so you're probably onto something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Could someone from the fashion dept. PLEASE get Ned a studded leather jacket & some tight ripped jeans?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Yowsa!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:31 (nineteen years ago) link

NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS REMIND YOU THAT ZERO IS ALSO A NUMBER (ex machina), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Who sticks out like a sore thumb more, George Clinton or Steve Vai?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:37 (nineteen years ago) link

The real sucky thing is that pretty much all of these soundtracks have at least one absolutely fantastic song on them... and then the rest can just go jump in a lake.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:37 (nineteen years ago) link

GRUNTTRUCK

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:37 (nineteen years ago) link

No, GRUNtruck, spell it right.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:39 (nineteen years ago) link

The soundtrack to the sequel of "The Crow" was worse.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:42 (nineteen years ago) link

wow, about 75% of my music collection from when i was 14/15 is listed on this thread. why must you remind me of the horrors?!

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Boy am I late to this thread. I'd say the first OST is worth it for "Burn" by the Cure (last great thing they ever did? I think so).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Is the JAMC thing on The Crow any good? The rest of it clearly sucks balls.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Ahem, as Alex noted, "Burn" most certainly does not suck balls, etc. The JAMC song is dull.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:47 (nineteen years ago) link

NIN's cover of "Dead Souls" makes the statues on Mt.Rushmore drool the blood of dead pilgrims.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Actually, that makes it sound good. Scratch that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Short answer: NIN shouldn't cover anything.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:49 (nineteen years ago) link

*desperately tries to guess whether this is praise or not*

xpost HAHA!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Sorry about that. I've never really got Fat Bob and Friends. I like that remix album they did tho.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Milquetoast performed by Helmet

a hint?

also, tracks 1, 3, 4 and 14 are OK, the STP song in particular (someday their second and third albums will get the critical rehab they deserve, i swear)

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I actually like the NIN cover of Dead Souls on The Crow soundtrack... Oh well.

The Rollins Suicide cover does suck though. And the rest of it (apart from OK songs by the Cure & JAMC) was mostly pretty awful I seem to remember.

mr scratch, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:11 (nineteen years ago) link

I like the jazz-groove of the Rage against the Machine song (that the Arsonists sampled).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:14 (nineteen years ago) link

The soundtrack to Crow II is more consistent (in a good way) (I think).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:15 (nineteen years ago) link

also, the thrill kill kult song off the crow is great. it's no Kooler Than Jesus, but it kicks its share of ass.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:18 (nineteen years ago) link

[Late to this thread]
stuff listed here that is actually awesome : Judgement Night Soundtrack. And I believe that's it.
I remember first hearing about the NIN cover of "Dead Souls" ... I had a couple of friends who'd heard it on Brave New Waves (CBC radio late night show) and they were going on about how awesome it was, and I was nearly pissing myself with delight. Joy Division? And NIN? This was my 1994 equivalent of Kevin Shields and Christian Fennesz doing an album of guitar noise-laden minimal techno with Richie Hawtin and Rene Loewe.
Was I ever disappointed when I finally heard it. On the slight upside, I did smile inside when I heard the Woodstock bootleg, since the thought of three-quarters of a million wet muddy Americans forced to gather and listen to Joy Division made me proud.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Last Action Hero OST
1. Big Gun - AC/DC
2. What the Hell Have I - Alice in Chains
3. Angry Again - Megadeth

These three are actually great - the rest of that album is obviously unspeakably terrible.

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Big Gun is great? I'll stick up for a lot of things, but not that (cue Meat Loaf)

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Best thing on the Judgement Night OST was the Sir Mix-a-Lot/Mudhoney pairing, "Freak Mama". There is no debate. I am right. Save your breath.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha! The cassette version of No Alternative added a live version of Sonic Youth's "Burning Spear". I bought that & the Lemonheads' _Come on Feel..._ on the same day. I miss you, UConn. 1994. Yeah.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Just when I had forgotten how awful the 90s were, this thread had to happen.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Sexual Healing performed by Soul Asylum - 4:45

PLEASE tell me this isn't the ACTUAL "Sexual Healing"!!?!?!?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Wow, Letters to Cleo be ost-ing!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:47 (nineteen years ago) link

PLEASE tell me this isn't the ACTUAL "Sexual Healing"!!?!?!?

Unfortunately, it is. It even had some airplay. Try not to think about it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh Soul Asylum's version isn't bad at all. I have a real soft spot for the No Alternative comp, save for Patti Smith, Sarah McLachlan and Soundgarden's tracks. The rest are mainly ace.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:50 (nineteen years ago) link

That one w/ Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is the Natural Born Killers soundtrack, and it is actually a very good album.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh god, this thread has reminded me of something I haven't remembered for a LOOOOONG time:

HOW DO YOU TALK TO AN ANGEL

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I try not to think about the song itself, but I find myself referring to unnecessarily sotto voce singers as having "the Jamie Walters voice."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh my god that Patti Smith -- "little emerald bird/don't fly away" or whatever the fuck it was. God was that terrible. The Soul Asylum "Sexual Healing" is not as bad as it sounds, IMO.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:55 (nineteen years ago) link

And, for the record - THE 1990s WERE NOT SO GOD DAMN BAD.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 17:03 (nineteen years ago) link

going way back for a moment i would just like to say that the velocity girl song on the clueless soundtrack is very good and only available on the EP on Slumberland. Until I found the EP, I taped that song off of someone else's copy of the Clueless OST.

I am surprised at the inclusion of superchunk on some of these, and even more so at all the 4 non-blondes songs. i didnt know they had more than one. also: SPONGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
