POINTS for including the first album album you -really- got into.
EXTRA POINTS if you were sober at the time.

POINTS for not including Substrata or S.A.W. 2.
EXTRA POINTS if you include them and convince me they hold the fabric of the universe together.

POINTS for pointing out this threads been done before.
EXTRA POINTS for chiming in anyway.

jubal harshaw (jube), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:29 (nineteen years ago) link

if you were in an abandoned galactic space-dock, why would you need any ambient records at all?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:31 (nineteen years ago) link

brian eno - apollo (best ambient album ever)
philip jeck - 7
tetsu inoue - ambient otaku

maybe this thread should be re-titled:

TOP THREE ambient records that make you feel like you are on an abandoned galactic space-dock

xpost

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:34 (nineteen years ago) link

TOMBOT to thread, dammit.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:35 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd like to give a shout-out to that Pop Ambient 2003 album I bought yesterday on Kompakt. Its dreamy shtuff. And a shout-out to ILM too, since ILM has brainwashed me into spending way too much money on that Kompakt stuff. They had the 2001(? I think) one as well, but i didn't pick that up. Maybe next time.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:40 (nineteen years ago) link

cutty: good call
Siegbran: VERY good call

whats TOMBOT? i'm new here (obviously)

jubal harshaw (jube), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:52 (nineteen years ago) link

steve roach - mystic chords and sacred spaces
global communication - 76:14

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Not quite ambient, but certainly galactic space dock ambient:

KLF - Space
Noto - Kerne
Oval - Systemische

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Robert Rich: Stalker
Seefeel: Quique
Morton Feldman: Rothko Chapel

His ultimate goal is to live in space and fight aliens with huge robots. I actually think he'll succeed. The soundtrack would not be ambient, though, more gabba or something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:46 (nineteen years ago) link

The Orb's Adeventures Beyond The Ultraworld

Omar (Omar), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:07 (nineteen years ago) link

fucking DETTINGER, people.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:09 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, Omar is on the correct track
1. The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld
2. Woob -- Woob 11:94
3. Spacemen 3 -- Dreamweapon
I like my ambient loud, so I'd much rather prefer stuff like
4. Brighter Death Now -- Innerwar. Loud as fuck, it does a great job of making you feel drunk and alone.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:12 (nineteen years ago) link

fucking DETTINGER, people. great choice, but there's superginormous amounts of points at stake if you avoid both Warp and Kompakt.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:13 (nineteen years ago) link

...and then I realized most ambient I like is of the pastoral/green/earthly type.

but to complete the top-3:

2. Basic Channel CD
3. Tangerine Dream - Rubycon

Omar (Omar), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:13 (nineteen years ago) link

how about points for Kompakt stuff not flogged to death on ILM?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Basic Channel would be totally classic, but probably lead to psychosis within 20 minutes. You're in an abandoned galactic space-dock, the last thing you need is ghosts chasing you.

The first Clouddead album would kind of lend some gaiety tho.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:17 (nineteen years ago) link

also I nominate The Caretaker, Selected Memories from the Haunted Ballroom for an abandoned, haunted galactic space-dock.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:17 (nineteen years ago) link

porter ricks - biokinetics

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:19 (nineteen years ago) link

This thread just made me put on that Lustmord CD for the first time in years and fuck, it still is the scariest vortex of pure evil you'll ever hear.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:33 (nineteen years ago) link

atom heart - binary amplified super stereo
v/a - earthrise ntone (haha i am cheating!!!)
vainquer - elevations (i actually prefer this to the basic channel comp)

hmmm ... if i had to pick something new i'd throw in anthony rother's "magic diner" ...

vahid (vahid), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:42 (nineteen years ago) link

i think i also need to shout out to atom heart's "silver sound 60" and his "datacide" project, too. oh and "very synthetic virtual noise" because the VSVN logo is the NASA logo inverted and reversed!!

vahid (vahid), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:45 (nineteen years ago) link

what sort of evil are you hearing in TPtDSH? the hunger of unfed kitty cats? Aldebaran is the breath of Cthulhu heaving to crack the floes of R'lyeh. sound so dark it'll suck the light-lovin' soul right outta ya. hard to believe it was shaped by humans.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:50 (nineteen years ago) link

On second thought, I agree that it might not be a good idea to be too spooked on this space dock, because I can't afford to go psychotic if I'm there for a long time. I'll need to be comfortable. So instead I pick
Global Communication -- 76:14
Gas -- Konigsforst
Eno -- Music For Airports

Yes, vahid, Vainqueur "Elevations" is one of the greatest albums ever, but I just wouldn't want it with me on the spacedock, for the reasons explained above.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 10 May 2004 20:00 (nineteen years ago) link

<3 y'all

jubal harshaw (jube), Monday, 10 May 2004 20:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Hang on, why is the spacedock abandoned? I need to know this to make my selection.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 10 May 2004 20:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Hello? Is anyone on the abandoned spacedock? Oh shit.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 10 May 2004 20:36 (nineteen years ago) link

(hahaha!)

noodle vague (noodle vague), Monday, 10 May 2004 20:49 (nineteen years ago) link

who are you, Moltar?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 10 May 2004 20:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh dear, I'm taking off that Lustmord record right NOW.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 10 May 2004 20:52 (nineteen years ago) link

too obvious :

Sleep Research Facility : Nostromo
Eduard Artemiev : Solaris
SETI : Knowledge

actual top three :

Klaus Schulze : Body Love
Thomas Köner : Kaamos
Troum / Yen Pox : Mnemonic Induction

three not-so-ambient records to cheer me up :

Polmo Polpo : The Science of Breath
Christian Bruhn : Captain Future OST
Lee Perry : Arkology

seven years pass...

1. Jonn Serrie - The Sentinel (deployed to clear out a heretofore inhabited space dock. any reasonable person would rather boil to death in the vacuum of space than endure 60 minutes of texturally unengaging "music of the spheres" nonsense)

2. Tholen - Sternklang

3. SETI
(Taylor Deupree's project, not the British S.E.T.I. mentioned upthread)
