Raphael Saadiq's "Instant Vintage": C/D?

I decided to throw this onto the iPod this morning since it had been a while since I had given it a listen. I loved it much a couple of years back and, unsurprisingly, it jumps up and proclaims its Classicness upon relistening. From the lovely / bizarre "Still Ray", with that tuba solo, up to the transcendent "Sky Can You Feel Me" and the bonus-y material at the end, the thing just holds up beautifully. Anyone love this as much as me (Dave Stelfox , you dig it, right)?

absolutely undeniably fucking spectacular... you know this already, though

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 22:05 (nineteen years ago) link

i typed that before i even saw my name on here!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 22:05 (nineteen years ago) link

Posted about this on the neo-soul thread.

Its really good, my only criticisms are that some of the lyrics come across as a bit corny at times, and (like almost all nu-soul records) its too damn long. I feel exhausted by the time I reach Side 1 of the second LP.

Liked his work on the Alicia Keys album too.

Classic for sure. Tubas!

four years pass...

Oh, man. 4 (!) years later and I dig up this old turnip and guess what? It's a TRUFFLE. What a timeless record -- drum programming be damned.

new tracks streaming.

is it just me or is the whole faux motown production on all these "nu-soul" artists just kinda tired and lame and trying to capitalize on the amy winehouse phenom? i know raphael has chops and has been in that scene for a long time but is that all these soul artists can do nowadays ? replicate berry gordy production and jamerson bass lines ad infinitum ? i mean cmon look at his myspace pics, temptations moves for dayz.

Agreed, but the first two tracks sound nice. That third one is a straight trouble man lift.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 20:39 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, as incredibly well as saadiq does this stuff i just cannot countenance enjoying this album in this fucking climate where i can turn on the tv and catch like, sharleen spiteri flailing at the same thing. truly sorry raph, maybe in a bunch of years!

r|t|c, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 11:27 (fifteen years ago) link

hopefully he at least gets as popular as everyone else with it though. would be fairly crushing otherwise.

r|t|c, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 11:30 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, this stuff might sound played soon but i hope it works out for him. the tracks sound good.

It is a great album but I'd rate Voodoo, Sol- Angel, Aaliyah, Tasty, Transition, Because I Love It, Fearless, Complex Simplicity and New Amerykah Part One higher.

The only one I might argue the toss about is the D'angelo but probably because it's perceived wisdom rather than the fact I actually like it more...

The Pastiche Liberation Front (sonnyboy), Saturday, 6 July 2013 22:18 (ten years ago) link

it was a rich decade for those of us not cursed with a quoteyfingers view of the genre, let's not humor the afflicted by pretending they can see past their wretched twisted appendages
