okay i don't really know the old versions by heart but am i the only one who prefers Will Oldham when he fleshes out the tunes.I really like this which surprises me.Can't wait to make the mix & match cd.Opinions please keeping in mind I'm most familiar with this phase of his career not the Palace stuff.Apparently the versions here border on heretical. But to me they just sound so doggone, gosh catchy i can't resist. But hey i'm from Texas so i'm used to hearing traditional country. So whats the consensus?

The record is cool but cooler in context. Since you can't go back in time and hear the originals first, you might not really grasp the scope of how great (and conversely, horribly shitty) some of those songs are. For about $12 you can track down both the Mountain EP and the Hope EP - two of his absolute best.

I always wonder about crap like this. Wifey, like most level headed gals, didn't grow up a music geek, so she heard things like The Clash and Buzzcocks for the first time with adult ears. That's amazing to me. I'm more than a little envious. Wish I'd saved SOMETHING. Ya know what I mean? Like, I'll never ever hear "Final Solution" or "Pinhead" or even "Refugee" for the first time EVER AGAIN!

Anyway, sorry to ramble. I'm drunk

Roger you are so right.Although this year for the i heard Final Solution for the first time by Rocket From the Tombs which almost sufficed as the experience you are talking about. Not to mention Sonic Reducer sung by David Thomas.I'm working on the drunk thing & listening to some of the originals now.Still wouldn't have missed a moment of my glorious musical youth of which i suspect you & i shared many of the same listening habits
