Repeat to fade

I've never really thought about this until now, but who invented the idea, or used it first...and why? I mean, you don't get this in poetry or other literature, film or classical music, so why in popular music?

people walked past a cave where a troglodyte was playing a primitive tune. As they got further away, the sound reduced. They kinda liked it that way...

Lynyrd skynyrd invented repeat to overblown ending, much better than repeating to fade. I always felt that repeat to fade was just an excuse for having sorted out the content, but not the structure of the song.

So what would you pick - a version of a song which is genius all the way through but which heads off in a slightly wanky direction at the end or one which is ok but which ends properly?

I would pick the former and fade it out.
