You mean "Meow Meow Meow Meow" vs. whatever the hell that SQ song sounds like ("Match Match Match Match")?

haha! if only the Quo song did do that

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 March 2004 15:52 (twenty years ago) link

One of my old bands mixed the Meowmix song with "Take this town" XTC...

(guess you had to be there..)

The Meowmix theme is classic. DJ Yoda's mixing it into "I Can't Wait" especially so.

Easy: "Pictures Of Matchstick" Men by miles - easily the best thing Status Quo ever recorded.

Now if you'd been asking me to choose between "The Meowmix Theme" and "Do The Shake & Vac.", that would have been a different matter entirely....

"One of my old bands mixed the Meowmix song with "Take this town" XTC..."

So something like:

"Living in a rabbit tunnel,
Keep the doggie in her kennel,
Mustn't let her see the world.

Miaow miaow!
Don't treat her like that.
Miaow miaow!
Don't treat her like that.

Shout it clear for all to hear,
You won't shoot this bird down.
Shout it clear for all to hear,
We're going to take this town.

Oh oh oh oh, miaow miaow
Oh oh oh oh, miaow miaow."
;

perhaps?

Hmmmm.....there is a similarity, I suppose, but I'm sticking with the `Quo.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 12 March 2004 16:06 (twenty years ago) link

It was more like :

Miaow Miaow Miaow Miaow
Miaow Miaow Miaow Miaow
Miaow Miaow Miaow Miaow Miaow Miaow Miaow Miaow
OH NO Don't treat her like that
OH NO Don't treat her like that
Miaow Miaow Miaow Miaow
Miaow Miaow Miaow Miaow
Miaow Miaow Miaow Miaow Miaow Miaow Miaow Miaow
OH NO Don't treat her like that
OH NO Don't treat her like that

I think you really missed an opportunity if you did that and didn't cop the intro / bridge "Oh oh oh oh miaow miaow"!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 12 March 2004 16:14 (twenty years ago) link

Good old internet. That's the sort of thing you'd have to write in to a magazine to find out, and only then if they could be arsed!

What other potential New Wave / punk : advertising jingle segues can we think of?

How about sttarting with Sex Pistols' I Wanna Be Me....

"Down down down down
And I'll take you down on the underground
Down in the dark and down in the crypt
Down in the dark where the typewriters click
Down with your pen and pad
That's all you have to do
Do the shake and vac and put the freshness back...."

"Yankee soldier
He wanna shoot some skag
He met it in Cambodia
But now he can't afford a
Finger of fudge is just enough
To give your kids a treat"

"I've got a feeling inside of me
That's kind of strange like
The Milky Bar Kid is strong and tough...."

Maybe we could persuade Captain Sensible to do an advert for Weetabix or John Cooper Clarke to do one for Sugar Puffs.... no, I'm just being ridiculous now

For some reason I still sing

"I like fish and I like liver / I like chicken in my dinner

[..forgotten this bit..]

Now you know a cat's meow means meowmix, meowmix, meowmix MEOW"

at people every so often. I never sing Pictures Of Matchstick Men at anyone so I guess Meowmix wins.

wow. that's an amazing memory for the music, the words of the kitten and the words on screen...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 12 March 2004 16:52 (twenty years ago) link

a friend o' mine once answered my call by reciting Meowmix theme. I had cajoled her into doing this beforehand tho. but it was still the best thing ever.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 March 2004 16:55 (twenty years ago) link

"Meow Mix Theme", just 'cause I have no fond recollections of Homer Simpson mentally singing along to "Matchstick Men", apropos of nothing.

surprisingly tough question

in seriousness though, I remember having a pretty ecstatic experience the first time I heard pictures of matchstick men

It really made an impression on me, too! And I must have been pretty young.

(I should note that I’m referring to the CVB version)

the original for me, right at the peak of a college party, although I remember liking the CVB a lot too around the same age.
