anybody else seen this cat leanin back in the greenish lac with the throwback and the phoenix cap, ragtop with the screens attached, it don't take a true genius, act like you don't know the king is back. so, chamillionaire! aka king koopa (because he spit nothing but fire!)-- definitely one of the next big southern stars (he bragged about getting offered more money than flip)(face it, most of these albums droppin albums is basic/so basically that mean this rap game need a face lift/i can't take this, so i'm bout to run up in the bassment with the duct tape and make myself big tigger's replacement/new york's cool but we down south on the map/how come down south stores aint got no down south rap?/i'ma crack the game up/what it do to dj clue, it's cool but can a playa get this version in screw??). he's been on dozens of swishahouse mixtapes and done plenty of his own (he even has a greatest hits out right now!) and plenty with the color changing click (rasaq [his brother!], 50/50, and some other guy [is it tow down??]) and plenty with paul wall (get ya mind correct was pretty big for them) that slow jamz remix was inexplicably huge and he's showing up on outside-of-houston mixtapes (hosting and on the cover of the new dj smallz southern smoke!)--- he's got that slow, punchlineful houston style totally perfected and a tough, low voice that sounds good at full speed and 20% off (I KNOW YOU WANNA HEAT ME UP AND MAKE ME STIFF LIKE STA-FLO CAUSE YOUR WOMAN LOVE THE WAY MY VOICE SOUND WHEN THE TAPE SLOW) and just the right lack of charisma. he can rap well (not quite as good as flip) about cars (he drives a mazda 929! but it might have a tv screen in the gas tank door thing [unconfirmed]) and having sex but if you're a fan of him you're supposed to explain that he's recently turned thuggish and guncentric and is unlike all of those other houston car rappers who sound like lil flip (you have to compare him to flip, too-- he's not as good but unlike flip, he's hot and pretty unique on everything he does, while flip finds a good verse and uses it again and again with slight variations)---

WW, do you write for anything I could find in Canada? I'd cut the throats of at least 15 local music writers including workmates if you could take their place.

LC, Friday, 12 March 2004 05:15 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

itz ya dog freestyle (the best swishahouse track ever and cham's best verse ever, maybe)
batter up freestyle
slow jamz remix aka screw jamz (it's not one of my favorites for sure, hooking singing is not something he should do often-- but everyone seems to love it)
mikes jones/magno - day 2 day grindin
move bitch freestyle
paul wall/cham - game over
oochie wally freestyle
big body rollas

anything else, it's all good-- he's got more recorded material than pretty much anyone (approaching twenty ccc tapes, dozens of swishahouse appearances, pw/cham solo tapes, solo stuff, appearances on every rap record released in houston)

William Wiggins, Friday, 12 March 2004 05:18 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

i'm not like that, LC.

William Wiggins, Friday, 12 March 2004 05:19 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

Probably a good idea, WW.

Look at the name of the feature story. Last winter I was this close to taking a job for them - good thing I screen my white people very closely.

it'z ya dog and day 2 day grindin are true masterpieces.

but I read on the internet that he drives a Sentra.

joshd, Friday, 12 March 2004 05:40 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

he's turned thuggish and guncentric?

what i like about him is how non gangsta he is.. what blows my mind is how creatively he can rap about worn out topics like money, cars and women!

and in interviews he and paul wall talked about how they liked that they can not curse and be positive and parents approve of their little kids rapping along!

joshd, Friday, 12 March 2004 05:59 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

not really guncentric but everyone's been saying "yeah, cham's going gutter again, unlike all those other car-obsessed mixtape cats"-- it's more like something that just fans are saying to sort of legitimize him when talking him up to non-fans, to separate him from the stuff people might have heard from houston. but i think he is more likely to throw in a gun (nigga, it don't matter the gun / the bullets relax ya scalp like vidal sassoon) or drug (bricks moving quietly like the lips of milli vanilli) line.

i think he's so creative because his material's so limited. how many ways are there to describe candy paint!

That's why I said that, yeah. I go to college in Hampton, Virginia and I was born and raised in Edmonton.

And what is that song you just put the lyrics of?

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:47 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

cham/paul wall - oochie wally freestyle.

why do you go to school so far away from where you live?

William Wiggins, Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:52 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

Well, my family has a weird tradition of making the kids go to a US black university for some reason and being that I'm not paying for it, I pretty much went where they told me. My sister went here too, so I was just following the line, right? Plus it's more of an adventure going somewhere that you aren't really familiar with. But I'm going home this summer and every summer and shit, it won't be so bad.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:54 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

it doesn't sound bad at all. you get to go to the united states! and a centrally located place in the united states. how is that not good? i'm from western canada, too, rollie. but not even a big city.

are you going to write about chamillionaire for pitchfork?

William Wiggins, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 00:07 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

naw, but I will download the shit out of it. If (when) he get signed or puts out a new record even, I'll do a single, prolly.

centrally located? it's like on the east coast, do you mean in the middle of east coast? Most people consider it southern, actually. where are you from in western canada?

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 00:16 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

it's sort of near all of the large cities on the east coast, nearer than if you lived in iowa or ohio. i never thought of it as part of the south. it's below the mason-dixon line, i guess. do you know any famous rappers?

i live in saskatchewan. do you know where that is?

William Wiggins, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 00:36 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

Of course I do. I mean, I know my Canada, dude. It isn't as if I was just born there and then I've just been shipped around the states in a box of some kind. I've lived in E-Town for my entire life until like January. Where in Saskatchewan? Regina? Wait, you said small town.

Rollie, you're from Edmonton? That city is getting drugged the fuck up (the kids I know from Edmonton hang out at Bankers and push meth and candy all day). Is it getting worse?

LC, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 12:46 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

Drugged up? Maybe by the Coliseum (because it's like the inner city) and surely there's mad drug action elsewhere in town, but I wouldn't say it rivals people shooting up in those shelters in Vancouver and the crazy people in T-Dot. It's definitely on the rise, because it's a burgeoning enterprise in the city, right?

Ahhhh, these people are likely from Millwoods. That place is like gangland territory.

Mixtape Messiah is hot, but the prolonged dissing of Dyke (LOL) Jones is a bit much at times. I kinda feel sorry for him! Cham really goes at him with the snitch stuff and how he dissed Magno though, using some 3-way phone call he had with some bitch and some other guy where he drops the other guy in it with this bitch, it's kind of really nasty relentless school bully type dissing.

Man i just read that other thread and if what that Mike dude says is true ("Man Chamillionaire and Dizzee got along well. Chamillionaire really respects Dizzee's stuff and Dizzee really respects the south.")then isn't that tantamount to being a bitch??? Acting all nice in his face then dissing him behind his back, that's what a fake nigga does innit??? Dizzee and Dyke Jones should link and make a diss record.

Was there really not a thread on "Ridin'" specifically? All I can find is it showing up in year-end countdowns.

Amazing song though. Got kind of killed by repeated plays but I remember hearing it for the first time, on the road from Atlanta to Athens after this big outdoor Flaming Lips/De La Soul show (the one that inspired this thread) came over the radio and we weren't really paying attention and gradually we were, and our conversation fell silent and we were kind of looking at each other like, holy shit, is that as good as I think it is? Always though the racial-profiling theme hit a little harder than you'd expect for a giant chart hit, and it gave the thing a good edge, on top of an obviously amazing hook and some solid rapping throughout. Also I love the really wobbly, weird intro, it's like the quiet windup for a sucker punch.

Then I spent a weekend dicking around with emily.s, watching the like twenty music channels on some jacked-up cable she'd inherited from a departed roommate, and the video was on constantly and gradually, any and everything we saw or heard was converted to the rhythm of the song. I can't really separate the track now from this spree of inspired in-jokes but that's not really Chamillionaire's fault.
