$$, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:18 (twenty years ago) link

the only br solo i ever copped ws a tape of sadats wild cowboys that i did really love but kinda got tired of fast, the lump lump remix w puba is still amazing tho

$$, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:20 (twenty years ago) link

ahhh Puba - yeah it's a shame he seemed to fall through the cracks. His solo stuff is kinda spotty - never heard the BR reunion album tho. Is it worth gettin?

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:23 (twenty years ago) link

BR = BN. duh.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:23 (twenty years ago) link

The other hip hop thread led me to the Source's 1998 list of greatest rap singles, and thence to Spotify & YouTube to check out the ones I hadn't heard before. Biggest surprise was this Brand Nubian song - great use of a potentially corny sample. I've never got around to buying One for All but clearly I should.

One For All is fantastic! basically has one bad song on it iirc, the rest is k-lassic

Moshy Star (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 17:59 (thirteen years ago) link

I love finding great early 90s hip hop albums that I missed at the time - Main Source, Son of Bazerk and Organized Konfusion's debut being three fantastic examples.

OK, I'm there.

sadat x has made a bunch of solo stuff that I totally love, especially "black october" (the one right before he went to jail)

Puba has, too. His 1st solo album has some good stuff. One of my favorite mc's.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 19:06 (thirteen years ago) link

but my ability to enjoy a lot of brand nubian stuff is hampered by how I'll be nodding along and then have to sort of forced-smile through several couplets' worth of homophobic weirdness

sadat x is in jail?

This is kinda curious, a 47-track compilation of instrumental versions has appeared on streaming services, with no obvious provenance. Certainly helps with the problematic lyrics of the past, but I wonder where this has come from, publishers maybe, looking for syncs?
