She could be in Belle & Sebastian.

She is 69 years old now. Possibly 70.

That's AMAZING, given her look on the recent albums...

Maybe Nana herself will discover this thread and tell us.

Why is there a picture of me on this thread? That is bizarro.

You would think that at some point in her career, she would have tried contacts.

"You would think that at some point in her career, she would have tried contacts."

I'm reminded of the Simpsons where Homer knocks off Elvis Costello's glasses - "Aah, my image!"

are you fucking kidding? That's like someone telling Angus Young to wear trousers.

DB OTM, signed glasses-wearers everywhere

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 05:48 (twenty years ago) link

Angus, short pants
Nana, Glasses
Groucho, glasses and stache
Iggy, shirtless
John Fogerty, flannel Shirts
Robert Palmer, Armani Suits
ZZ Top, Beards
Jim Morrison, bottle attached to his head
Me, glasses

I'm not sure what my point is here...

Enjoyed the BBC4 documentary about her!

Hmm, have to catch that when it gets repeated on BBC2 (as it must)...

So infrequently on our screens in recent years that I now remember Benny Hill's send-up more than I do the woman herself...lots of hit albums but just the one hit single from some crappy TV reality show in the eighties (can't remember which)...and then didn't she become a Euro MP or something?

Brother Belcher (Marcello Carlin), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 13:10 (fifteen years ago) link

*goes off and checks wiki*

yes, she did! "Only Love" (the hit single) was from some terrible-sounding TV mini-series called Mistral's Daughter starring Stefanie Powers well thank Gawd I missed that!

Wow, this is EXACTLY what I was thinking! Except I thought it might have been Ronnie Barker that did it.

Apparently she had a series on British TV every year from 1968 to about 1978. After the documentary there was a clip show - unfortunately Donovan and Steeleye Span, who were both spotted briefly in the documentary, weren't featured, but her song with Demis Roussos almost had me up on my feet hurling crockery into the fireplace - if I had a fireplace that is. Then there was concert from the Royal Albert Hall, 1974, didn't see that though.

(xp) Yes, Harry persuaded her to sing without her glasses, smooth talking devil

My parents loved her.

We watched every damn show.

I hated her more than Shirley Bassey.

Or did I? Yeah I did.

Does she have any kids? And if so, do they have kids?

Been itching to use 'Nanna Mouskouri' since, well, the first time I saw a record of hers in a thrift shop over two decades ago.

A friend and I are working on some Donovan-related stuff and he unearthed this:

Even if I weren't Greek, I think I'd have a lifetime crush on Nana Mouskouri.

My Dad used to play a tape of her in the car when I'd visit him. I can remember especially liking one song and now can't remember which one.

She had a good voice.

Stevo, Tuesday, 19 March 2024 06:59 (two months ago) link

Had me worried there for a moment. She's 89 after all.

Tom D (the first British Asian ILXor) (Tom D.), Tuesday, 19 March 2024 08:04 (two months ago) link

Was just reading the book Listen by Michel Faber in which he restates the claim the Nana Mouskouri is "the highest-selling female artist worldwide, ever" with sales of 350 million records.

Food for thought.

Josefa, Tuesday, 19 March 2024 12:57 (two months ago) link

More than Madonna or Taylor Swift, just for starters?! Hmm.

shave and a haircut, two brits (Matt #2), Tuesday, 19 March 2024 13:02 (two months ago) link

Faber concedes that the same claim is often made for Madonna, and his source for the Mouskouri claim is an undated quote from a website called "Greek Gateway," so......

Nina's cover of "Sundown" (with new French lyrics) is one of my favourite covers ever. Her "no vibrato" thing suits Gordon Lightfoot so well
