Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 18:32 (twenty years ago) link

I always kinda heard *Pink Flag* as one long song.

Not That Chuck, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 18:36 (twenty years ago) link

Listen harder.

maypang (maypang), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 18:38 (twenty years ago) link

I should of said "one long *great* song." But pressed I'll say "Mr. Suit."

Not That Chuck, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 18:41 (twenty years ago) link

"Connection" (ducking, running)

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 18:45 (twenty years ago) link

You are evil.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 18:45 (twenty years ago) link

no, Justine Frischmann is evil

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 18:49 (twenty years ago) link

12XU, ditto.

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 18:52 (twenty years ago) link

Mannequin does it for me.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 18:57 (twenty years ago) link

Man-a-KIN. That's the one.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 19:02 (twenty years ago) link

You know, it's really a perfect record. What about *Chairs Missing*? Dibs on "I am the Fly."

Not That Chuck, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 19:05 (twenty years ago) link

"Three Girl Rhumba"

scott m (mcd), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 19:11 (twenty years ago) link

pink flag, because the entire song is an open E.
for Chairs Missing, I choose "Sand In My Joints"

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 19:22 (twenty years ago) link

MR. SUIT!!!

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:04 (twenty years ago) link

Chairs Missing = French Film Blurred vs Long Tinkly Outdoor Miner bonus track

ferg (Ferg), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:18 (twenty years ago) link

i'm with lowdown too!

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:34 (twenty years ago) link

EX LION TAMER, BIYATCHES!

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:35 (twenty years ago) link

Alright. Here it is again, and it's called...1 2 X U!!!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:36 (twenty years ago) link

Not that Chuck is right, it's hard for me to think of this album as parts, I have to hear it as a whole. I've got it on my iPod but I always end up skipping the songs when they come up because they don't sound right out of sequence.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:42 (twenty years ago) link

So I guess I'm alone on Strange. Lousy REM.. I guess familiarity does breed comfort after all.

maypang (maypang), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:44 (twenty years ago) link

"12XU" yet again.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:46 (twenty years ago) link

gotta be ex lion tamer

jksd, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:58 (twenty years ago) link

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 21:16 (twenty years ago) link

12XU

Hunter (Hunter), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 21:22 (twenty years ago) link

the one on side two where they go "la la la"

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 21:30 (twenty years ago) link

yeah that's ''mannequin''.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 21:34 (twenty years ago) link

'Dot-Dash' (ducking & running)

I dunno, either one of the pop ones ('Fragile' & 'Mannequin') or probably 'Ex-Lion Tamer' I love the "fish fingas all in loi-ne"...

Seriously though, this is an evil thread. You can't pick one.

'12XU' is the consensus for punk compilations though...

Chalk up another one for "Ex-Lion Tamer". Either that or "It's So Obvious"

Doobie Keebler (Charles McCain), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 22:23 (twenty years ago) link

"lowdown" (or "dot dash" if we're allowed to include bonus tracks). and "another the letter" from Chairs Missing

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 22:25 (twenty years ago) link

I like Strange best as well

John Fell Ryan, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 23:34 (twenty years ago) link

"Field Day For the Sundays". But any of em would do.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 04:28 (twenty years ago) link

ex lion tamer, folks.

todd swiss (eliti), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 05:24 (twenty years ago) link

It was "Ex Lion Tamer", but I re-listened to the album this weekend driving home w/some people (one of whom said, "You, know, when I think of the 'classic punk' sound I think of "Pink Flag" not the Sex Pistols or The Ramones") and I decided that...

I really, really liked "Fragile" even though, it seems, some people tend to slag off some of the poppy songs at the end. The drumming is so roboticly good, I love the drumming on the whole album, repeatedly hitting that cymbal sounds excelent as does the insane, frantic hand clappings on "Champs".

christhamrin (christhamrin), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 05:31 (twenty years ago) link

Strange, for sure...which possibly provided inspiration for Eleanor on - what song on "Gallowsbird's Bark", can't remember.

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 05:38 (twenty years ago) link

mannequin!

who has the time to listen to strange?

brian badword (badwords), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 07:57 (twenty years ago) link

Haven't heard that LP since I sold my copy a decade or so ago. I think I gotta go with "Mr. Suit".

Actually I was never terribly impressed with "Pink Flag" - for me, it grew increasingly tedious after a dozen listenings. But Wire certainly deserve praise for inspiring Minutemen and (presumably) Minor Threat.

Myonga Von Bontee, Wednesday, 3 March 2004 08:50 (twenty years ago) link

"Lowdown" for me. But the one-chord-drone version of Pink Flag they have been playing recently on tour might be even better.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 08:56 (twenty years ago) link

Three Girl Rhumba

Probably.

Just at the moment anyway.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 09:00 (twenty years ago) link

Mannex-lion tamerquin

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 6 March 2004 17:25 (twenty years ago) link

I love the original but I think I might like R.E.M.'s version of "Strange" more. It's hysterical to hear Wire played so arenay. Plus I heard it first and assumed there would be a lot more "doo-doo"'s in the Wire version.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 6 March 2004 17:26 (twenty years ago) link

at the very least R.E.M did better for Wire than Lou Reed did for the Velvet Underground on Rock'n'Roll Animal

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 6 March 2004 17:27 (twenty years ago) link

'mannequin' or '12xu' depending on my mood

geeta (geeta), Saturday, 6 March 2004 21:05 (twenty years ago) link

"Ex Lion Tamer", without hesitation.
