i'm in a bad mood and was listening to my iPod on the way to work this morning. I realised that all the songs that made me smile were ones with clapping in them. I want to compile the world's longest list of clapping songs, so I'll be happy all the time!
The following were all on the iPod, but there's a ton more and i wanna try to pull together a CD of great clapping records, at least, so come on show me what you're made of!

1) The Clapping Song - Shirley Ellis
2) Pass That Dutch - Missy Elliott
3) I Thought - Brandy
4) Make It Clap - Busta Rhymes
5) We Will Rock You - Queen
6) Eric B & Rakim - Put Your Hands Together
7) Naughty By Nature - Clap Yo Hands
8) Honey (Clappas Rhythm) - Ce'Cile
9) Hey Ya - Outkast
10) Oh Happy Day - Edwin Hawkins Singers

My books tell me that the "handclaps" on "Where Did Our Love Go?" are actually guys stomping on 2x4s. Sounds like it to me, though that could be the power of suggestion.

Made one of these for the indiepop list's monthly cdr swap, after browsing previous threads here and sites elsewhere. Here's what I was able to fit on an 80m cdr. In hindsight, might have subbed You Am I's "Trike" in place of "Who Takes Who Home?", but I love the melancholy closer aspect of it.

1. the starlight mints - sugar blaster
2. the new p rnographers - chump change
3. death cab for cutie - the sound of settling
4. beulah - emma blowgun's last stand
5. fountains of wayne - denise

8. the strokes - 12:51
9. the cars - my best friend's girl
10. glide - always fall
11. belle and sebastian - the boy with the arab strap
12. spoon - the way we get by
13. the waxwings - ten o'clock your time
14. the postal service - clark gable
15. the shins - kissing the lipless
16. matt pond pa - shortsighted (demo)

Um, that one on London Calling, chorus goes "anything i want, he can get for meeeeeeeeeeeeeee!", um, what's it called? Right after "Rudie Can't Fail"? "Hateful"! Handclaps are great. "Up With People" by Lambchop has great handclaps too, otherwise I'll second everythign else here, pretty much.

Lots and lots of great old Sparks songs, though I don't know any off hand. Kimono My House sprinkles handclaps on us like manna.

Beggars Opera - Festival
Not the best song on the "Waters of change" album, but the handclap bit is beyond jovial!

I'd also like to nominate the record that Tom gave a recent glowing review of, Stupid Cupid by Connie Francis. Not only is the hand-clapping great, it just sounds like she's grinning through the whole thing - like she's trying to be sexy, but just ends up having fun, which to our 21st centruy ears sounds even sexier.

As for cowbells vs. handclaps, it's apples and oranges. Handclaps go on the upbeat (or at least they should); cowbells go on the downbeat (or all four beats).
