agreed. it wasn't impenetrable like I was made to believe it would be when I got it. and it opens very well.

San Te, I think "sound collage" is a great way to approach it.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 13:40 (thirteen years ago) link

I think it's the greatest punk album since I don't know when. Maybe too long of a good thing on "Teqkilla" and lame with the "life is such a game" line in "Tell Me Why," but otherwise perfect.

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 16:14 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm not sure about the album as a whole, but "XXXO" is a jam.

Euler, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 16:57 (thirteen years ago) link

The rhythmic cluelessness people talk about upthread is obviously purposeful, "Ex sex sex oh" and all. xpost: Ha, she should cover "Futter Mein Ego."

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 17:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Yes, Kevin Martin is totally a touchstone.

oh well if you put it that way

unchill english bro (history mayne), Thursday, 26 August 2010 00:48 (thirteen years ago) link

What the hell does "rhythmic cluelessness" even mean in this context?

king boy swag (The Reverend), Thursday, 26 August 2010 03:58 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, one thing i really like about MIA is her rythmic sense, awkward as it may be

a dystopian society awaits if we continue on this path. (contenderizer), Thursday, 26 August 2010 04:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Sorry, how should I put it? I was referring to HI DERE saying she's "arhythmical," when at least in the Letterman clip, she managed to sing her off-rhythm lines exactly as she does on the recording, which requires an ear. "XXXO" seems like another good example, where her slowing down behind the beat is, you know, pretty obviously an effect she's going for. Should I not say "obviously"?

New Diplo-assisted demo. Better than most of the tracks on the album:

it's actually just as good as the other tracks. "Lemme Hump You" is tremendous and the accompanying video even moreso.

new mixtape. pretty good all around - a couple of those demos and a bunch of new stuff. all one mp3, but if you look around you can probably find split tracks.

christ I finally get around to hearing MAYA last week and now there's already something else out

I am old

(MAYA is awesome btw, surprised at how much hate it got)

assorted curses (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 7 January 2011 16:36 (thirteen years ago) link

The hate for MAYA was pretty mystifying.

defying expectations is risky

assorted curses (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 7 January 2011 17:07 (thirteen years ago) link

I kinda dig that she made a noisy abrasive album, the level of sonic detail is really engaging to me. I'm more forgiving of sloganeering than others tho

assorted curses (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 7 January 2011 17:08 (thirteen years ago) link

really the only places where the album loses me is where she pulls back on the noisiness ("It Iz What It Iz", "It Takes A Muscle", to a lesser extent "Tell Me Why" and "Space")

Indolence Mission (DJP), Friday, 7 January 2011 17:10 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah those seem like a really intentional respite from the chaos, like there needed to be a break

assorted curses (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 7 January 2011 17:15 (thirteen years ago) link

I like It Takes a Muscle tho

assorted curses (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 7 January 2011 17:15 (thirteen years ago) link

I buy it most from "Space"

Indolence Mission (DJP), Friday, 7 January 2011 17:17 (thirteen years ago) link

"Space" is totally in my top tracks of last year list.

ilxor this could be a standout thread for you imo (ilxor), Saturday, 8 January 2011 20:57 (thirteen years ago) link

took about 4-5 months off from listening to this and still love it. and yea the noisiest bits are the best.....

mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Saturday, 8 January 2011 22:27 (thirteen years ago) link

just getting around to checking out the Vicki Leekx mixtape, which starts out very very well

Indolence Mission (DJP), Friday, 14 January 2011 15:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Definitely liking the mixtape. It has a few weak spots, but very enjoyable overall.

Moodles, Friday, 14 January 2011 15:32 (thirteen years ago) link

after an interruption due to work (lol) I'm 6 minutes in and this is great

Indolence Mission (DJP), Friday, 14 January 2011 16:09 (thirteen years ago) link

so yes, this is great

also great: "Internet Connection (Huoratron Rum Aid Remix)" (currently playable on Pitchfork)

once it all clicks in around the 2 minute mark... holy hell

Indolence Mission (DJP), Friday, 14 January 2011 20:05 (thirteen years ago) link

"Space" is so pretty.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 09:14 (thirteen years ago) link

ugh why do people keep bumping this thread to talk about that m.i.a.? it's not like there's a shortage of threads that are actually about her.

You might want to complain to someone who cares.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 09:53 (thirteen years ago) link

you might want to start caring

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 10:13 (thirteen years ago) link

it's like me going into any old random thread to talk about a completely different artist

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 10:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Which I wouldn't have any problem with.
