i guess personally for me MIA wouldnt need to be so subtle and measured if she was atually more "authentic" bc her voice would feel like a "genuine voice of the oppressed" but when she is some rich broad getting a boner for terrorist dudes w/ hot nikes and watching utube in beverly hills not so much, i know that makes me an asshole but whatevs
who gives a fuck about her biography except us dickheads on ILE?

In 2003, Maya turned up here and said, ‘I heard you’ve been looking for me,’ ” Russell told me when I went to see him. “She decided that we were going to put out her music. And since Maya is able to will the universe and is an obvious force of nature, I found myself saying yes.”
hahahahaha

I have to say, it's kind of amusing how some of the excerpts are way less jarring/idiotic etc in the context of the piece.
― Image: electrostimulation applied on a penis (HI DERE), Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:03 (thirteen years ago) link
I dunno. The quotes are way more amusing out of context.
― Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:04 (thirteen years ago) link
I read the piece yesterday and thought, "Oh, she's become `unpredictable' in that boring star way."
― Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:05 (thirteen years ago) link
Like, for example, the Blackwater thing; it's pretty clear she's talking about appropriating a specific style and applying it to a different function from the flow of the piece, yet the narration tries to subvert the story its telling by editorializing about how the idea doesn't make any sense when it actually does.

the few people who court controversy these days seem to be trying way too hard in my opinion
either that or we've all been paying attention to this sort of thing so long that it'd take a totally loose cannon to really get my attention

wtf is up with that twitter? isnt she like 35?― kumar the bavarian, Thursday, May 27, 2010 11:09 AM (3 hours ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink
this. is she straining to sound youthful? her twitters (tweets? whatever.) read like those of a preteenager.
the olive bread and truffle fry lines are cheap shots, but there's way more than enough in that article, anyhow, to out her as a callow poseur. but we all knew that already.

so shakey is your point that this isn't even worth discussing because she's "pop" iyo?
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:20 (thirteen years ago) link
I think it isn't worth talking about because everyone who cares has already made up their mind one way or the other and is violently disdainful of the people who disagree with them.
In a lot of ways, she has succeeded admirably in being a reflection of 2K politics.
― Image: electrostimulation applied on a penis (HI DERE), Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:23 (thirteen years ago) link
I think talking about whether or not she's "authentic" is a total waste of time, as it is with any artist.
xp

i guess i have more issues with her being 32 & acting like she's 19 than her trumping up her dad's terrorist past
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:27 (thirteen years ago) link
I thought part of the point of being an artist was that you didn't have to grow up.
― Image: electrostimulation applied on a penis (HI DERE), Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:28 (thirteen years ago) link
it would be a lot less fun to poke holes in her image if she didnt come across as such an unpleasant person
― max, Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:28 (thirteen years ago) link
that quietus hit piece on florence and the machine seemed so cheap because florence came across as basically a nice lady, if a little simple

this just seems like two unpleasant people spent some time together and the unpleasant person who is the writer got the last word
actually i dont know that lynn herschberg is an unpleasant person

she certainly hold musicians to high standards of political sophistication though
lynn hirschberg sounds awesome imo, would definitely love to sip martinis w/ lynn as long as she's not like writing a piece abt how i'm a massive asshole w/ bad table manners

basically this piece is not for us, it's more like a heads-up for anyone who wasn't just enjoying her music but also taking her seriously.
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:39 (thirteen years ago) link
somehow I doubt that anyone who takes M.I.A. seriously is going to be dissuaded from doing so by the New York Times

who are these people that take MIA "seriously" and what does it mean to do so
― emotionally abusive jowls (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:42 (thirteen years ago) link
I mean I guess I do but that doesn't mean I take her political sloganeering at face value
― emotionally abusive jowls (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:43 (thirteen years ago) link
i could see this piece subconsciously affecting our lesser critics to not try so hard to find MIA to be a genius, esp if the new album is difficult/crap. none of it is really news, but the rising sentiment of MIA ISN'T ALL THAT is being dignified by the grey lady here.
― da croupier, Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:44 (thirteen years ago) link
ILM most certainly takes MIA seriously -- much more so than the fans, say, who've picked up on "Paper Planes" on the radio, or found out about her from that Slumdog song, or her Grammy performance.
Whereas, on ILM we trade off discussions in a 1,000+ post thread about MIA.

OK, I am just catching up with this thread and responding to stuff from three weeks ago, but whatever: The first time I heard "Paper Planes" back in '07, I immediately noticed the "Rump Shaker" reference. It's pretty obvious! Never heard "Straight to Hell" before, so I didn't realize there was a Clash sample until months later.
