Noel Gallagher: Classic or Dud?

Not Oasis, just him. It struck me as I read the interview in the NME this week that he's actually rather amusing and likeable, and that I've always thought this, no matter what he says/music he puts out.
Agree/Disagree?

Bill, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (nineteen years ago) link

he's calmer and more clever than his bro ( not difficult) his interviews are sometimes funny . still not enough to make him a cool showbiz guy .

francesco, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (nineteen years ago) link

He's the idol of an (semi-acid casualty) art school colleague of mine. Here's why: 1. He is, er, stylish
2. He has unlimited access to unlimited narcotics
3.He has a hot ladyfriend
4.Um, some of the music is pretty good, also.
(Oh Dear. I mean, hello, nos.1-3 describe EVERY MALE ROCK STAR EVER.)

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Well I think he's fucking thick. Sorry.

|\|0|2/|\4|\| |=4'/, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Comes across so much consistently as a self-styled thicko that it sounds like he uses a 'mouthpiece', or has had one forced upon him.

As character: somwhat witty, somewhat dim. 'Bloke' persona reconciles contradiction?

As writer of melodies: has been ace.

As guitarist: OK, but not outstanding.

As lyricist: very poor.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (nineteen years ago) link

as far as oasis goes, i have no interest. but as far as NG himself goes, i don't like the persona at all. really, it is what i don't like about rock music. too blokey really. it is more than that, something i will try to articulate better later. but unfortunately, he is too much like too many people i know from the greater leeds area (of course, they are very likely co-opting is geezer persona).

he may be very different *in real life*, and we only see a 'persona', but it is not a persona i feel any affinity with

gareth, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Difficult to put aside his musical-crimes. Reminds me too much of lads I grew up with, frustrating types where there was a lot going on behind the tough-blokish-northerner act, but you had to scratch + jab + probe to see any of it (+ never ever in other male company).

stevo, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I've met the guy a couple of times. Very friendly and very funny in the right mood! Hanging around with him permanently might hurt my head, but in small doses, could be worse. Since he wasn't as omnipresent a figure here as over there in the UK, it's much easier for me -- even running the Oasis list as I do -- to just accept him as A Character, albeit one I differ with on a number of topics! ;-)

He comes over very well in Live Forever (new Britpop fillum) - yes certainly blokish but entirely sensible about the era and his contribution to it.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 10:20 (eighteen years ago) link

well, he is the more sensible of the two brothers. he does come across well in interviews that I've seen.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 10:24 (eighteen years ago) link

He's quite entertaining in a way, I guess, but really, jesus, he's nothing on Liam for sheer social schadenfreude is he? As in "oh my god, who's he gonna punch/fuck/swear at/get pissed with next and will it end his career THIS time?"

Noel Gallagher has expressed his dismay at the fact Ed Sheeran will play three gigs at Wembley Stadium later this year.

As confirmed last year, Sheeran will play a trio of dates at the 80,000 capacity London stadium in July. Two of the dates were added due to popular demand.

However, Gallagher is not happy this is happening. As he tells NME in the cover feature of this week's issue, which is on newsstands from tomorrow and available digitally, "I don’t think I can live in a world where that’s even possible. When you hear that kind of polished pop and then there’s a ginger guy with a fucking guitar it seems subversive, but it’s fucking not."

Gallagher goes on to give his evaluation of the current music scene, painting a bleak picture.

He said: "It’s a strange time, and it seems like the whole thing is embedded for good now, for fucking forever. It’s not all over, but it’ll go back to the way it was in the early ‘80s where indie bands are the alternative thing, the lower level. In the early ‘80s everyone at indie labels, even major labels, were trying to push this music to the fore because everything else was shit, and maybe it’ll happen again, but I don’t see it for the next decade."

Oasis made this world possible! Noel hated 80s indie and "all that sticking screwdrivers in guitars shit"

I still can’t get enough of Seinfeld. It’s still the best thing that’s ever been filmed. It reminds me of the Nineties — good times. I was the only person in England who was watching it! That’s a fact."

Noel Gallagher has confessed to The Shortlist he was wrong to say "he could not live in a world" where Ed Sheeran could sell out three nights at Wembley Stadium.

His change of heart came after Sheeran fulfilled a promise to appear at Gallagher's Teenage Cancer Trust concert at the Royal Albert Hall.

"He's a good lad and I won't have a word said against him," the musician said.

Noel:(Laughs) Who says that? Her parents?

Speaking to The Streets‘ Mike Skinner and Manchester Murkage Dave on their Spotify podcast, In The Third Person. Gallagher said: “Gene was into Arctic Monkeys big style and that, but now he’s fucking flipped. It’s all J Hus and Dave and all that, and every time we go out it’s all that stuff going on, which I know nothing about.”

When Skinner asked if Gallagher wanted the 17-year-old to form a band, he replied: “Yeah, but not necessarily a rock’n’roll band, d’you know what I mean? It’ll be interesting to hear his mix and how he brings all this grime stuff into his version of rock’n’roll, or guitar music, or whatever it is. You sort of throw everything in the pot and see what comes out.”

Discussing some of grime’s biggest names, Gallagher agreed with Skinner that Skepta is the biggest “rock star” in the country. He added that some musicians have the power to surpass genre. “I think they’re just stars aren’t they?” he said. “Whatever genre of music you’re in – it’s like I do fucking guitar music, they do whatever they do – there’s people that are bigger than their genre of music.”

when it comes to appealing to the mass collective, liam has it in the bag.
he plays the game far better.
i think his appearance at the manchester thing that ariana grande put on turned things around for him.
(as per indicated in the documentary that followed his post oasis/beady eye thing).
suspect the press re noel being on his boat that evening totally killed his options re the younger crowd, whereas young'uns genuinely love liam now.
noel is for the £50 quid fella/mojo readers only these days.
which is a weird turn of events given history.
once had hopes that noel would become interesting when he teamed up with David Holmes, but nah, just more of the same.
would still by the album he nearly made with AA/FSOL if it ever gets a release though.
