what is the most unfashionable music to make right now?

an honest question, because I really am trying to rack my brain. what isn't there even an underground market for somewhere? and I don't mean "unhip", because there are plenty of people doing unhip things like neo grunge and still making mad cheddar, or something that's last year's trend like electroclash but is in truth still thriving to some degree.

not sure if what i'm looking for here is music's unacknowledged future or its shameful past, but have at it.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

techno.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

folk?

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

20 minute symphonic suites with lots of mellotrons and lengthy virtuoso synth and guitar solos

Too bad IMO btw.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Technofolk.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

swing revival.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

but those clothes never go out of fashion

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

haha bootleg mashups.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I would think ska would be more fashionable now than, say, two years ago. What with newer Jamaican music (ie dancehall) being popular, lots of love for all the Trojan reissues, etc. Also No Doubt's greatest hits, people seem to like the new Rancid album

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

see, i dunno if that's true, though, re: ska and swing-revival. because while those trends were short-lived, they were powerful enough that there are still dwindling after-effects of it today. I kind of doubt that a ska band in 2003 would have too much trouble finding gigs or a niche in its local scene. I guess what I'm looking for is a band that would get laughed out of any venue anywhere.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

You've got a point, Sonny...and yet I never ever want the OC mid-nineties ska revival to return. Ever.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

barbershop!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post, I was rebutting Jess and Matos, not Sonny. also, mashups falls under the "last year's trend" thing I was saying I'm not talking about, but I'm really not sure what I am talking about, so it's likely I'm not expressing it very well.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

rockapella are unfashionable?!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the OC mid-nineties ska revival?

No Doubt was the tip of the fucking iceberg.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

please note I said "ska," not "reggae" or "dancehall" or even "rocksteady." and I should've specified third-wave ska, or the SoCal kind Ned mentioned for me.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Jungle, for sure. I couldn't get $3 for my copy of the Reprazent 2XCD last week. Sad. "Brown Paper Bag" is still dope tho

roger adultery, Monday, 15 December 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

jungle was never big in america, though.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

1997 was one of the best years for music ever.

No Doubt was the tip of the fucking iceberg.

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

blues music that goes something like, "Well ya ever had a woman, she really done you no good... Yeah I say you ever had a woman who really done you no good... Well lemme tell ya now..." and here the music would stop, and then the guy would be like, "she wmmffmmrrmmfffmmm." and the crowd are supposed to go absolutey wild.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Good call on the LTJ Bukem style. It sucks that it's uncool to make smooth oceanic d'n'b because d'n'b on the whole is uncool.

How about really eager, earnest, busy, vocalized dance tracks like Junior Senior? If so, GOOD. That shit embarrasses a nigga.

DarrensCoq, Monday, 15 December 2003 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

haha Junior Senior "dance"

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

'haha' yeah but to me, despite the party band affectations, they sound like they were intending to come across as dance music, at least by a stretch. This is where I'm supposed to be terribly embarrassed, I guess, so, is it all over my face?

DarrensCoq, Monday, 15 December 2003 04:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Momus to thread.

Mid-1980s-style Huey Lewis-esque bar rock?

Mid-1980s MOR/AOR a la Mister Mister and Nightranger?

Or are these genres currently hot 'n' happening in the Williamsburgs of the world?

super drifty ambient music

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Monday, 15 December 2003 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooooh! How about that unmistakable brand of trip-hop - Sneaker Pimps-ish vox with 'buzzsaw' effects - they always used in late 90's movie 'underworld' scenes such as 'the goth rave,' 'the drug dealer pulling up to the people,' 'the troubled goddess doing having a crisis (this girl now appears in all Nickelback videos).'

DarrensCoq, Monday, 15 December 2003 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

IDM. I love being unfashionable.

Xii (Xii), Monday, 15 December 2003 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

IDM isn't unfashionable. Just deeply boring.

spICK SPack, Monday, 15 December 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 15 December 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 15 December 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate otm funk-metal and rap-metal, most unfashionable music possible right now. I couldn't lure people to my ex-band's shows with promises of handjobs and crack rock.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 15 December 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

As opposed to the more mainstream horse songs?

Jonathan (Jonathan), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

If "R.E.M." is a style of music, then that is surely what is least fashionable right now.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Lets have a look - Winamp TV - Rem sessions - 3 viewers

Lynskey (Lynskey), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The Trance stream is always full. Disturbing.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

That style, you know the one, the one where they...damn i forgot it.

I hear psychedelic pop is very unpopular.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 15 December 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Traditional jazz outside of New Orleans. Still hip with the old folks though. My friend's got a trad band in Minneapolis though, the South Side Aces.

(god I hate the word dixieland though)

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, Steve Vai/Joe Satriana style instrumental guitar hero rock.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

- minimalist percussive progressive house

proper stuff, not that elephant 6 whimsy crap

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Stand by my pick (symphonic rock has sadly been unfashionable for about 25 years now - too bad!).

But that being said, Quiet Storm seems to be quite unfashionable too. When was the last time a male black singer released an album in the style of Lionel Richie's "Can't Slow Down" or Smokey Robinson's "Being With You"?

GnR's "November Rain" to thread.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn. Three posts before the end of the thread and Geir beats me to it.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

"November Rain" had nothing to do with symphonic rock. It was just long and overproduced, and had none of the wonderful 18th/19th century classical music elements that made symphonic rock so great.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

luther vandross had a number one album this year (holding off staind, metallica, and radiohead) and racked up a lot of grammy nods: no way quiet storm is dead (+ turn on the radio after 10 pm: it will never die)

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)
