that's a lot of questions right there. i might need to spread this over a few posts

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

venues in Melbourne worth checking out:

the rob roy, first floor, ding dong, the empress, the town hall hotel, duke of windsor, bar open, corner hotel (anyone want to add anything to this list?)

radio = 3RRR (102.7) and 3PBS (106.7)

record shops = missing link in bourke st, city. that's the only one i can really recommend.

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

sydney

record shops (theres a thread already i think..?): red eye (leftfield - rock, electronica etc etc), resist (punk), birdland (jazz), mojo (roots), um...what're you looking for?

radio: jjj, ser, fbi, eastside, rdj

and colin to thread!

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

you'd need to tell us what music you like before we can start naming bands though i think

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Radio in Sydney - fbi, 2ser.

This thread is useful for record shops:

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

venues colin?

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

erm, The Hopetoun Hotel, Candy's Appartment, The Annandale Hotel, The Phoenix, The Icebox. Check the weekly free papers (3D, Drum Media, The Brag) for wot's on where.

Help me out people, I'm sure there's more.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I think this has been said on that previous thread, but Reefer Records (Crown St, Darlinghurst) and Egg Records (Eerskineville Rd, Newtown) are two of the best record shops for second hand and rare stuff. Then there's Red Eye in the city, expensive but worth it. I think they all deal on the net too, at least I know Reefer does:

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe if you outlines yer preferences Thea? (alo can you get my friend Nic Harcourt's autograph?)

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

There must be life beyond Jet and Jessy Moss, right. Does this help: Clinic, Broadcast, Liars, Steven Malkmus, ESG, Cut Chemist, Michael Mayer, Broken Social Scene, Boozoo Bajou, The Shins...

"(alo can you get my friend Nic Harcourt's autograph?)"
--Hmmf. If he's yr friend you can ask him, yes?

Thea B, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Pardon me if I sounded cranky just then. This's all very helpful so far, thankyou

Thea B, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd say redeye is the shop for you! but as colin mentioned its expensive (see how much us poor folk have to pay for overseas releases)

lawsons on pitt st is a great one for second hand/promos etc.

haha my friend is disappointed :-(

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Hah.

Nic can't write, anyway. He expresses himself through music. And try living on a public radio salary.

Place where new-ish bands play?

Thea B, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Thea, judging from your list, it's Redeye(for new) and Reefer (for secondhand) for you. Reefer recently had a whole swag of ESG and Mayer/Voigt/Raumschiere on vinyl.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

venues - see colin's list above. warning: the hopetoun may be a shithole.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, don't knock the Hoey!

Melbourne's better for the music you like. Actually, Melbourne's better for everything except the weather and the people.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i haven't been to the hoey in years colin. it is the site of many fond memories though.

also you could tune into *cough* alchemy on sbs radio.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Shithole how? I love barroom brawls

To be honest what I'd probably buy is good local music that might not be available here and likewise for shows unless it's something great that I missed on tour here.

Thea B, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

hot, sweaty, poor sightlines unless yer tall etc.

its a local institution though, been going for decades.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

To Jim's record shops list I'd add Second Spin in East St Kilda anr Reload in Richmond for great secondhand stashes.

Venue-wise, if you want some nice places just to hang and drink: the Lounge, Revolver (in chapel st), Spleen, and Sahara Cafe are all good.

Also the Espy hotel for sheer grand view out the bay windows stylee.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice, Trayce. gracias

Gaz I thought you were calling Nic your friend, up there. It's been a long day.

Maybe your pal would like the latest "sounds eclectic" cd...it has lots of cute cartoon characters on the cover. I could get Nic to put on some lipstick and kiss it for him/her

Thea B, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

she's hopping up and down grinning at the thought Thea!

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
yikes, redeye's blanket international shipping charge - I'm in NZ & they want to charge me $45 to ship four 12"'s (as opposed to the $18 for "rest of australia")? sheer mentalism.

etc, Monday, 26 September 2005 04:17 (twenty years ago)

any other australian stores w/decent vinyl selections for micro/electro/DFA-esque stuff & an online catalogue?

etc, Monday, 26 September 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

there really isn't, if that shipping cost is a problem. you'll be 10000% better off ordering from europe or the US

jimmy glass (electricsound), Monday, 26 September 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

Sanity can actually be really surprising with stuff they have on 12" in their online catalogue, but not exactly a reliably decent selection...

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 26 September 2005 05:16 (twenty years ago)

hey thanks! sanity have three of the four things I'm after, & they have a special NZ shipping charge section! sweet!

(the only reason I stumbled across redeye in the first place was when I went to my juno.co.uk wishlist & the four things I wanted were out of stock, & had to hit google . . .)

etc, Monday, 26 September 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

four months pass...
Silly question, but who are the gig promoters in Melbourne?

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 17:18 (twenty years ago)

depends - what style of music?

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Thursday, 23 February 2006 00:36 (twenty years ago)

eleven years pass...

Revive! I'm going to be in Sydney for the first week of December. Where are the record shops? I haven't been to Australia since 1990...

Also, F A P ? (and where's a better thread for this?)

Thanks!

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 27 November 2017 06:16 (eight years ago)

a lot of the record stores are around Newton or Enmore or Erskineville.

though there are also some in Darlinghurst and the city?

I am around Elvis if you want to grab a brew.

charlie h, Wednesday, 29 November 2017 08:32 (eight years ago)

I'm totally up for a brew. This weekend will be busy, but I'll be wandering around the city for the rest of the week.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 30 November 2017 01:52 (eight years ago)

Tib, Friday, 1 December 2017 13:29 (eight years ago)

shackling the masses with plastic-wrapped snack picks (sic), Friday, 1 December 2017 18:47 (eight years ago)

The chance to meet Elvis T IRL coerced delurk. Looking at my week it now seems exceptionally unlikely.

Tib, Friday, 1 December 2017 22:55 (eight years ago)

Lets try for Wednesday the 6th then... I'm leaving Friday morning

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 2 December 2017 07:50 (eight years ago)

hi, Elvis! sadly, the weather hasn't been very kind to you.

i'm definitely good for Wednesday. probably anytime from about 5pm.

Tib, see how you go. would be good to have you along.

charlie h, Monday, 4 December 2017 08:16 (eight years ago)

edwardo can't make it on Wednesday until after 10pm, but if we start late perhaps that's OK?

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 5 December 2017 01:36 (eight years ago)

xp

TBF, with all the walking I've been doing I'm enjoying the rain as a respite from the heat.

Tib, see how you go. would be good to have you along.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 5 December 2017 01:42 (eight years ago)

I'm sure I'll be able to last till after 10pm (no huge commitments on Thursday).

thoughts on where we should make this happen? I know a bunch of places that could work. where are you staying, ET?

charlie h, Tuesday, 5 December 2017 12:43 (eight years ago)

Looks like Thursday will be better for me... will update.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 01:48 (eight years ago)

Thursday evening is tight for me as I have to attend a speech night at the school I teach at.

still good for now-ish (or within the next couple of hours) if you can still somehow swing it, ET.

charlie h, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 07:54 (eight years ago)

Arrgh sorry I missed everyone. Unavoidable, but as it looks now - I'll probably be back down for a longer stay sometime next year.
