Here's a challenge -- would all the Andrew WK fans say he is cod-metal or not?

Cod Country Top Ten

1) "Driving On 9"-Breeders
2) "Mississippi"-John Phillips
3) "Torn and Frayed"-Rolling Stones
4) "Delta Dawn"-Helen Reddy
5) "Faraway Eyes"-Gorky's Zygotic Mynci
6) "Act Naturally"-Ringo Starr
7) "Boll Weevil"-Shocking Blue
8) "Muswell Hillbilly"-Kinks
9) "Cotton Eye Joe"-Rednex
10) "Papa Was a Rodeo"-Magnetic Fields

I don't know if country covers by non-country artists are considered cod, though....

A message from the coderator.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 00:31 (twenty years ago) link

it really pleases me to see shocking blue on arthur's list.

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 00:31 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, Jody, hopefully this is the year they really get their due. What with that song on the Ladytron mix-CD thing and all. They really were one of the most incredible rock bands ever. It's really, really NOT all about "Venus"--they're just so far from being a one hit wonder, it's ridiculous.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 00:39 (twenty years ago) link

Arthur -- point us in the right direction: having heard only "Venus" and the B-side ("Hot Sand"?) and liking it, where does one go from there to get into Shocking Blue ?

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 01:18 (twenty years ago) link

Can't you hear my Love Buzz? Can't you hear my Love Buzz?

Shocking Blue POX (aside from the ones mentioned already)
1) "Send Me a Postcard"-the song on the Ladytron Softcore Jukebox collection, it could be a Deep Purple song)
2) Long and Lonesome Road (rocks almost as hard as "Send Me a Postcard"
3) Mighty Joe (their second American single, not as good as "Venus" but just about)
4) "Out of Sight Out of Mind" (not as psychedelic as it sounds, but really catchy)
5) "Inkpot"-Veryt bouncy folksy singalong, with a sitar. Or a fake sitar.
6) "Shocking You"-a very insistent record. They're shocking us, there's just no denying!
7) "Sally Was a Good Old Girl"-it's Jeannie C. Riley meets CCR kinda.
8) "Eve and the Apple"-"but she took the apple and we lost paradise!" Ooh!
9) "Let Me Carry Me Your Bag" -Mariska's gonna totally freak out if you don't let her carry your bag.
10) "Love Machine"-I like this better than "Love Buzz" myself.

But I'd definitely get "Love Buzz" and "Boll Weevil" . I guess you could call them a cod-Jefferson Airplane, but that's not really doing them justice. They're more earthy and pop. Just better.

Wasn't Mariska incredible looking?

And look at the bottom photo here--she's Iggy!

I'll need to do some research for a ardkore cod-rap top ten, but you better believe t99's "anasthasia" will be at the top of it. which KLF single?

etc, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 22:20 (twenty years ago) link

Any list of "cod-reggae" tunes that doesn't feature Patti Smith's unlistenable "Redondo Beach" at the very top is rife with error.
