First question... Evanescence?!??!

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 4 December 2003 17:53 (twenty years ago) link

Sting is once again poised to grab a few more of these meaningless awards.

bahtology, Thursday, 4 December 2003 17:57 (twenty years ago) link

This year is closer to at least acknowledging what pop was about for a large swathe of the population.

It's still not a good list, but the Evanescence album is fine for what it is, and I like it more than the other album nominations, actually, which includes three other albums that I also like a lot.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:05 (twenty years ago) link

Interesting that Fountains of Wayne are suddenly a new band.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:07 (twenty years ago) link

I hope Avril wins Song of the Year - I don't like her but "I'm With You" is amazing.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:08 (twenty years ago) link

Not bad at all, esp. considering the past.

I mean, you've got Neptunes, Missy, Jay-Z, White Stripes, Radiohead, 50 Cent, Johnny Cash, Clocks by Coldplay, Lose Yourself, Foo Fighters, Eyrkah Badu, Anthony Hamilton, R Kelly....seems like alot of these artists are either highly regarded or much discussed on ILM (give or take Anthony Hamilton and the Foo Fighters, but I like them both).

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:11 (twenty years ago) link

The only person I hadn't really heard of was new artist nominee "R&B vocalist" Heather Headley.....

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:12 (twenty years ago) link

It's still not a good list, but the Evanescence album is fine for what it is, and I like it more than the other album nominations, actually, which includes three other albums that I also like a lot.

I haven't heard the album, so I can't comment. But my question wasn't that of disgust, but of surprise. I had no idea they'd made such an impact?

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:13 (twenty years ago) link

Evanescence moved 50 Cent - type units....multi platinum wit tha kidz

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:15 (twenty years ago) link

And rightly so, damn it. There does seem to be a smaller proportion of "why the fuck?" nominations this year.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:17 (twenty years ago) link

HEATHER HEADLEY ROOOOLZ

She's a Broadway-type; I think she was Nala in "The Lion King".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:17 (twenty years ago) link

Heather Headley is/was a Broadway star. I can't remember if she was in the original cast of Rent, or not. I saw her in Aida a few years ago. She's fantastic.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:18 (twenty years ago) link

Dan Perry, you're damn trigger-happy.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:18 (twenty years ago) link

the biggest shock i think is the lack of a token old fogey in even the Album of the Year category. come to think of it, i can't think of any recent comebacks of 60's/70's icons. hell, there isn't even really a nu-soul token!

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:19 (twenty years ago) link

Lightning-fast and quick on the draw!

Personally, I'm sitting here feeling very smug about being right in a mini-argument I had this morning about whether Clay Aiken would get nominated for a Grammy.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:21 (twenty years ago) link

aside from a couple Zevon nods, Warren and Johnny Cash seem to have cancelled each other out for the usual post-mortem accolades.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:23 (twenty years ago) link

The major-est category with a fuck-off nomination is that risible Luther Vandross song in SOTY.

The compilation album of this year's nominees wouldn't be too bad, I've picked up cut-out copies from the 90s and thought "were these peopleo n the same planet as me?".

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:23 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, these nominees really skew to a youth crowd this year.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:24 (twenty years ago) link

The intent might be questionable, yes, but product over process, people!

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:26 (twenty years ago) link

(dan do you juggalo buddies know you're down with broadway musicals?)

What kind of stuff does Headley do solo? Is it broadway tunes?

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:27 (twenty years ago) link

There should be a separate Dead Grammys award ceremony to free up the regular awards categories for the living. I'm counting at least 11 nominations for dead artists, and that's not even the full listing.

I wonder if there's a way to eliminate enough variables to figure out how much your death increases your odds of being nominated?

Brian Miller, Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:29 (twenty years ago) link

Here's the full list.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:29 (twenty years ago) link

Would love to see wins from: Al Franken (though sadly that one isn't televised, 'cause he'd TOTALLY play the Michael Moore of the Grammys).

-I want to hear Eric Idle read Charlie & the Chocolate Factory(!)

-Fountains of Wayne (had no idea they'd gotten so big in the mainstream).

So, was Clay not nominated? I'm a little disappointed, I like Clay. I might be the only one.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:30 (twenty years ago) link

speaking of Idol...did Ruben ever have an album come out? I was kinda excited....

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:31 (twenty years ago) link

Clay didn't get a nomination. I larfed nonstop.

Heather Headley's solo stuff is largely in the contemporary R&B genre, kind of like mid-90s Toni Braxton in terms of production. She's also ridiculously gorgeous.

Ruben's album is supposed to come out in early 2004. I think he's got a single in circulation right now which is... all right. Too much "I'm sorry", but DAMN IS IT SMOOTH.

(Matt, most of my Juggalo friends also like musicals! We are Juggapussies.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:35 (twenty years ago) link

aside from a couple Zevon nods, Warren and Johnny Cash seem to have cancelled each other out for the usual post-mortem accolades.

zevon got FIVE nominations for a perfectly mediocre album that nobody bought. i wouldn't call that being canceled out!

fact checking cuz, Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:36 (twenty years ago) link

'stacy's mom' was a trl mainstay for a month or two.

maura (maura), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:37 (twenty years ago) link

haha

we proudly present:

The Great Milenko: A Musical
starring
Violent J
Dan Perry
Mandy Patinkin
The Kottonmouth Kings

and

Kathleen Turner as Mrs. Robinson

Music by Sir Elton John, Tim Rice, and Shaggy 2 Dope

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:41 (twenty years ago) link

Stacey's Mom also went top 5 on the top 40 radio chart!

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:42 (twenty years ago) link

news fact: that Zevon album gets Uncut magazine Album of the Year.

[Mind you I don't agree with the aesthetics of Uncut that is overloaded with drab'n'dull: Americana/ Alt.Country/ Singer-Songwriters]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:43 (twenty years ago) link

Wasn't Fountains of Wayne nominated 7 years ago for that damn Tom Hanks music flick tune?

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:44 (twenty years ago) link

cuz, you live up to your name, my post was poorly researched. still, i was referring more to the Album of the Year category, which is all fresh'n'young and includes neither fogey comebacks nor the recently deceased.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:45 (twenty years ago) link

They FROM Fountains of Wayne were, but not the band.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:46 (twenty years ago) link

I caught a clip of the FoW video on VH-1 while at home last week.
(sighs) misses cable.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:48 (twenty years ago) link

dj m: do you think zevon would have been uncut's album of the year if someone who wasn't semi-famous and dying had made it?

al: i doee your point. zevon would've been an easy old-fogey to nominate for album of the year!

fact checking cuz, Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:49 (twenty years ago) link

doee = do see, as spell checking cuz has informed me.

fact checking cuz, Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:49 (twenty years ago) link

Is this the first year that 2 of the best album nominees were by hip-hop artists?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:53 (twenty years ago) link

Hmmm... nominations for both Michael MacDonald and Earth, Wind & Fire. It's 1979 all over again.

Seriously, this is one of those years that the Grammys probably had no choice but to skew young... like 1999. I think I'm happy that all the alternative choices in Album of the Year went towards the choice I would've made... i.e. Elephant instead of Hail to the Thief, Justified instead of Stripped, and two hip-hop albums instead of two sentimental favorites (any comination of Zevon & Harrison & Vandross).

Jeez, do I hate "Where is the Love." I don't say this often, but where is "In the Club"?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:55 (twenty years ago) link

Hey, what happened to the "Best Alternative Album" category?

The "Alt" trend is over, so they (finally) moved on to rap?

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:58 (twenty years ago) link

There should be a Best Metal Album category.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:59 (twenty years ago) link

Re: Zevon/ Uncut ...Allan "Americana" Jones is the chief at Uncut and he does control the agenda at Uncut.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 4 December 2003 19:02 (twenty years ago) link

The Record of the Year noms are really good ("Hey Ya!" really IS the "record of the year"), and it's great that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are now a Grammy-nominated band.

Sam J. (samjeff), Thursday, 4 December 2003 19:05 (twenty years ago) link

at least the Norway alarm music awards, recognises Best Metal Album [as announced today]

http://alarmweb.org/2003/

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 4 December 2003 19:09 (twenty years ago) link

There should be a Best Metal Album category

Didn't there used to be a metal album category? I remember the scandal when Jethro Tull beat out Metallica's And Justice For All...Did they just chuck that and make it alternative when alternative was big?

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 4 December 2003 19:12 (twenty years ago) link

Woah, did you see that best albums list? This is like the first Grammys awards I'm actually gonna give a rat's ass about since 1996!

I think they got rid of metal after Soundgarden won and threw a bitchfit screaming that they weren't metal. Losers.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 4 December 2003 19:14 (twenty years ago) link

really? I didn't know Cornel and co. had so much pull with the academy! I never heard about that, but it sounds like something that could have happened in the ol' alterna rock daze.

soundgarden was sooo metal, too.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 4 December 2003 19:17 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah the abandonment of Metal was a definite alterna-deal.

God, I remember being really excited when U2 won best alternative album for Zooropa and Bono said that it was ludicrous but they'll continue to "fuck with the mainstream." I was like a lil' Jim DeRogatis at 14 I tells ya.

But this year's selections are fairly awesome! At least way more interesting than a Steely Dan renuion.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 4 December 2003 19:20 (twenty years ago) link

wait, huh? there is still a metal category. it is k-lame, but it's there.

maura (maura), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:21 (twenty years ago) link

hey I like that Marilyn Manson song! And I hope the White Stripes win and bitch about being called alternative. We need to reaffirm the 90s are dead.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:21 (twenty years ago) link

any metal category that includes stone sour is automatically downgraded to being lousy. IT IS A RULE

maura (maura), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:23 (twenty years ago) link

There's still "Alternative"? That's funny.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:23 (twenty years ago) link

Fight Test? They couldn't come up with five albums, so they included a Flaming Lips EP anchored by a single from their last album?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:35 (twenty years ago) link

they nominated that Paul McCartney/Super Furry Animals unlistenable collabo for "Best Alternative" awhile back!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:39 (twenty years ago) link

From "Rings"? Didn't McCartney chew carrots on that track, or something? Does that count as a collaboration? I'm probably thinking of something different.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:18 (twenty years ago) link

So, two (arguably two-and-a-half) albums in the AotY category, and all four of the top nomination-getters (6 each for Beyonce, OutKast, Jay-Z, and Pharrell; not to mention 5 for Missy, Eminem, and 50 Cent) are hip-hop.

... does this mean it's dead?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:21 (twenty years ago) link

Haha.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:25 (twenty years ago) link

Warren and Johnny Cash seem to have cancelled each other out for the usual post-mortem accolades.

Cash not only got nominated but actually won a Grammy last year for American IV (despite it actually coming out after the deadline).

Vic Funk, Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:31 (twenty years ago) link

I'm kinda surprised by the Outkast nominations, because (I believe) both Speakerboxxx/TLB and Stankonia came out in September (of 2003 and 2000 respectively), but Stankonia didn't get the Grammy nomination until a year and change later, and this one's getting it just a few months later. although I guess it figures since that album brought them the crossover audience that was already expecting the new one. but still, it's weird.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 5 December 2003 04:36 (twenty years ago) link

stankonia came out on halloween

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 5 December 2003 04:42 (twenty years ago) link

did it? nevermind, then.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 5 December 2003 04:59 (twenty years ago) link

I hope LynnMarie comes up and says "We're not a fucking Polka Group" thus letting us realize we're not in the 1820's.

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Saturday, 6 December 2003 14:01 (twenty years ago) link

I was suprised when I heard the "Record of the Year" nominations -- four of the five choices are songs that I would generally leave on the car radio whenever they turned up. Swap out "Where Is The Love," with "In Da Club," as an earlier poster suggested, or "Ignition Remix" or, heck, "Rock Your Body," and the category would be perfect.

As for Fountains of Wayne, it looks like the Academy is fitting them in under that malleable "first recording which establishes the public identity of the artist" language.

John Fredland (jfredland), Saturday, 6 December 2003 14:28 (twenty years ago) link

I cannot accurately express my absolute joy that "Dip Set (Santana's Town)" is now a Grammy-nominated song.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 6 December 2003 16:03 (twenty years ago) link

can i say that i am pleased with mavis staples getting a nod for her work with dylan and am fucking pissed off at the two bit hypocritical fence sitting brad paisley pulling the wool over nashvilles eyes for another year?

anthony easton (anthony), Saturday, 6 December 2003 16:06 (twenty years ago) link

I can't believe Dave Matthews is nominated for anything at all.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 6 December 2003 16:07 (twenty years ago) link

This slays me. Emphasis mine:

Best Male Rock Vocal Performance
(For a solo vocal performance. Singles or Tracks only.)

New Killer Star
David Bowie
Track from: Reality
[Columbia Records]

Down In The Flood
Bob Dylan
Track from: Masked And Anonymous - Music From The Motion Picture (Various Artists)
[Columbia Records/Sony Music Soundtrax]

If I Could Fall In Love
Lenny Kravitz
[Virgin Records America]

Gravedigger
Dave Matthews
Track from: Some Devil
[RCA Records/Bama Rags]

Return Of Jackie & Judy
Tom Waits
Track from: We're A Happy Family: A Tribute To Ramones (Various Artists)
[DV8/Columbia Records]

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 6 December 2003 16:33 (twenty years ago) link

I also like how four out of five tracks in the "Best Male Rap Solo Performance" have exhortations for titles ("Lose Yourself", "Pump It Up", "Stand Up", "Get Busy").

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 6 December 2003 16:36 (twenty years ago) link
