I still love that he dropped the beat to go acapella just to call himself Hip Hop’s Benny Hill. He was so much more than the villain

a hoy hoy, Friday, 1 January 2021 13:41 (three years ago) link

He was never realy a villain

candyman, Friday, 1 January 2021 13:57 (three years ago) link

I have the original Fondle Em pressing of Operation Doomsday, hate to part with it but I wonder what that will go for now

i have the 2001 reissue of bl_ck b_st_rds, it might be one of the few semi-rare things i own.

(i mean not "rare" but not landfill either)

trans-panda express (m bison), Friday, 1 January 2021 15:14 (three years ago) link

xxxp Tho sending imposters to shows and being like "guys I'm literally a villain what do you want" lol....

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 1 January 2021 16:16 (three years ago) link

probably did the best post-ODB production wu-tang with “9 Milli Bros.” RIP to a legend.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Friday, 1 January 2021 16:21 (three years ago) link

all time best use of fenugreek the beat or the spice

looks like all the special herbs beat compilations are on this youtube playlist. this really more my speed right now

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 1 January 2021 16:32 (three years ago) link

I have those special blend albums he did. Not sure if they are bootleg pressings but the mix he did of MOP was ridiculously hard

candyman, Friday, 1 January 2021 16:35 (three years ago) link

can't imagine it was all cleared and whatever but those are by doom yeah

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 1 January 2021 16:43 (three years ago) link

xp to Western® with Bacon Flavor: I was listening to Special Herbs last night, and I had forgotten (if I ever knew) that DOOM made the beat for "Underwater", one of my favorite Ghostface solo joints

Selfie Stick Stickly (bernard snowy), Friday, 1 January 2021 17:00 (three years ago) link

This seems so out of the blue, even by 2020 standards... any word on cause of death? Or why it took his family two months to announce?

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 1 January 2021 19:51 (three years ago) link

I feel so awful for his wife, was there ever any more information about what happened to their son?

RIP to The Villain. Of all the artists who've had formative, life changing effects on my tastes in music that've been lost to this horrible year... this one might hurt the most.

Sabre of Paradise (trevor phillips), Saturday, 2 January 2021 07:45 (three years ago) link

The price hikes for his records online overnight are pretty staggering

candyman, Saturday, 2 January 2021 08:22 (three years ago) link

Madvillainy is brilliant but I prefer his own solo stuff, album wise. Madvillainy just had more of a push which is why more people are familiar with it I think. Hos own production is more idiosyncratic and interesting, also just thicker sonically.

candyman, Saturday, 2 January 2021 08:35 (three years ago) link

I rarely pay attention to lyrics but listening to Operation Doomsday made me pay attention and made me want to listen to more hip hop artists. His flow, his voice, his lyrics and how great the beats sounded.

Madvillainy is also brilliant and one of the best hip hop albums I’ve ever heard but I hope his legacy ends up in people looking past that album and listening how great the rest of his work is. Lots of gems amongst his other monikers and collaboratios.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 2 January 2021 09:04 (three years ago) link

I rank it like
Born like this
Mmm food
Doomsday

But tbh it's hard to decide...

candyman, Saturday, 2 January 2021 12:05 (three years ago) link

Doomsday, geedorah, madvillainy, and viktor Vaughn in some order

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Saturday, 2 January 2021 12:20 (three years ago) link

The Jody watley sample on that album is so hard

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Saturday, 2 January 2021 12:22 (three years ago) link

If you're including all his stuff, then the king geedorah album has to be in there too. The best version of black bastards is the bootleg I got with the bass turned up a lot.

candyman, Saturday, 2 January 2021 13:01 (three years ago) link

i have no idea how he managed to clear all those samples on doomsday.

shabbat bloody shabbat (voodoo chili), Saturday, 2 January 2021 13:20 (three years ago) link

villainy iirc

mark s, Saturday, 2 January 2021 13:45 (three years ago) link

of all things it was the Sesame Street sample on Mm Food's last track that had to be removed on all later pressings. The original "Kookies" beat is worth finding. Looks like it's on YouTube for the moment.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAYdO30Tcu4

maf you one two (maffew12), Saturday, 2 January 2021 14:32 (three years ago) link

The first thing I heard from him was the Four Tet Madvillain remixes and I pretty much sought out everything Doom did after that.
to this day I think that remix album is some of the most amazing music I’ve ever heard.

Sweet but reminded me why mos' voice is not one of my favourites.

candyman, Saturday, 2 January 2021 18:00 (three years ago) link

Stretch Armstrong shared about 15+ minutes of Doom on his and Bobbito's show in 1997. Pretty great stuff.

Happy to share Doom joining me, @koolboblove and @lordsear on the @StretchandBob Show on 4/24/97. I sarcastically say “hiiii Doom” because he had been staying at my place recording, and was at my house more than I was. Enjoy. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 https://t.co/gvbVoz37Py

Thank you so much for that Mos clip, what an absolute joy.

There's an alternate universe where Mos had the most amazing career.

Theres an alternate universe where mos actually made better music post rawkus.

candyman, Saturday, 2 January 2021 22:11 (three years ago) link

There will always be that one slick Rick jam. Well unless you look on Spotify, where his best post-Rawkus album seems to have been taken down

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 3 January 2021 09:19 (three years ago) link

Was The New Danger post-Rawkus? There was some good stuff on that - the Marvin Gaye tribute was fantastic - but I felt the clashes with the label over what to do with the Black Jack Johnson stuff sent his career in a weird, self-destructiv direction. So much talent, tho - and a really charismatic, alive interviewee.

interesting thread from the guy at Adult Swim who DOOM worked with - explains that cancelled "Missing Notebook" series from a few years ago.

Flash forward to like a decade later and I hear DOOM really wants to work with me again. After several talks with his management we came up with the idea of the Missing Notebook Rhymes. Of course, once we start releasing them, we find two things out:

It’s Crazy to me... the irony of an artist dying in 2020 mostly known for wearing a mask. Just wow.

xp he also died on halloween, which was once the only night most people wore masks

THE FIRST TIME I MET DOOM.

It’s weird telling this story about THE FIRST TIME I MET MF DOOM because I don’t think I’ve ever spoken about it other than in passing or word of mouth so sitting down to write about this considering that he’s gone just has me all sorts of fucked up. pic.twitter.com/ANsRchYQp3

There should be a book about him. Some of the myths and anecdotes around him are like those surrounding old blues men like Robert Johnson or something.

Here's a nice outtake from Dangerdoom

cajunsunday, Monday, 4 January 2021 08:37 (three years ago) link

Supposedly he got the operation doomsday cover from tracing around the character outline on an episode on vhs that he paused on his TV

Wtf lol etc

I'm going to give dangerdoom another chance as I thought dangermouses beats were ho hum the first time

candyman, Monday, 4 January 2021 08:39 (three years ago) link

xpost

I have been thinking the same thing, but trying to dig up anecdotes and truths and details about Daniel Dumile kind of seems antithetical to what DOOM was about

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 4 January 2021 16:02 (three years ago) link

I would be up for a book of unprovable tall tales about Doom tbh. Print the legend.
