I've always assumed A-mee-bix, as in "pertaining to an amoeba", or literally The Amoebics.

Amebix are so fuckin great

There's just a massive chug to their sound that nobody else quite gets (well Axegrinder and some other metally crust bands approximate it), they just have this unique like... Amebix-time signature.
