Strange (Non-Festival) Live Bills

I just saw Bubba Sparxxx open for Blink-182, and it made me recall a few other whiplash bills. There was a The The tour with Frank Black and the Cranberries as openers, and I once saw Elliott Smith opening for Run On opening for Will Oldham. Then, of course, there was that infamous (or at least infamously underattended) Public Enemy/Sisters of Mercy/Gang of Four trek (can't remember the order!).

So, what other strange, jarring, or unexpected line-ups have you come across, not counting everyone-and-their-mother-styled Pu-Pu Platter festivals?

I saw Dwight Yoakam (sp?) open for Husker Du in the late 80's.

I saw Kix open for the Dead Boys at the old Ritz on 11th street.

I saw Pylon open for the Wonder Stuff....which resulted in a very bad vibe.

this was talked about in another thread, but earlier in the month at the Knitting Factory in NY and LA there were ODB/dillinger escape plan and mike patton/rahzel shows, respectively.

I just read an interview w/Sam Prekop in which he said that the Sea and Cake opened for the Cranberries in '93!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:35 (twenty years ago) link

what interview was that, jaymc? I don't think the Sea and Cake existed in 1993...

Liz Phair opened for Graeme Jefferies at Phyllis' Musical Inn in Chicago in '92.

Sonic Youth/Public Enemy at the Aragon, Chicago '89 or so.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 23:05 (twenty years ago) link

I saw the later-aborted Sisters of Mercy/Public Enemy tour (with Young Black Teenagers, Warrior Sould and Gang of Four supporting).

One of the weirdest was when Einstuerzende Neubauten got Showaddywaddy out of retirement to support them in London in the early nineties...

(Romeo was always my favourite 'waddy BTW)

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 23:19 (twenty years ago) link

Jimi Hendrix opening for The Monkees is the one answer that's always trotted out for these things...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 23:27 (twenty years ago) link

UB40 opening for Rush in London, 1983 is the weirdest one I actually attended (hey, I was 14). I understand that Meat Loaf opened for Sun Ra at some point in the mid-'70's....would have liked to see half of that, at least.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 23:32 (twenty years ago) link

Sonic Youth opening for Neil Young is another famous one.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 20 November 2003 03:06 (twenty years ago) link

this summer in montreal will oldham opened for the yeah yeah yeahs opened for bjork.

Elliot (Elliot), Thursday, 20 November 2003 03:55 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah I saw that Neil Young / SY bill ... don't forget Social Distortion who opened (frankly I wish I could).

Sonic Youth were great; it was their first visit back to Chicago since the infamous Public Enemy / Sonic Youth show and the ensuing riot. They opened with "Tom Violence" and dedicated it to the Chicago Police and just played a blistering set.

Oh, and Neil ruled too.

didn't Laika tour with Fiona Apple at some point after 'Sounds Of The Satellites' came out? that confuses me.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 20 November 2003 08:21 (twenty years ago) link

One gig I've always regretted missing was Cabaret Voltaire supported by Sun Ra at the Hacienda in 1989-ish.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 20 November 2003 09:26 (twenty years ago) link

The most famous one was when Einsturtsende Neubaten had Showaddywaddy as support once.

Seriously. A college ball I believe.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 20 November 2003 09:29 (twenty years ago) link

Mark, I think it was just a "regular" Neubauten show, possibly at the Kilburn National Ballroom. There's a, err, lovely pic of the lads upthread BTW.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 20 November 2003 09:41 (twenty years ago) link

oops. And I searched for Showaddywaddy before posting too.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 20 November 2003 09:42 (twenty years ago) link

Possibly The Warlocks (death psych noise) opening for Aqualung (think an indie Michael Bolton).

Dear John, Thursday, 20 November 2003 09:44 (twenty years ago) link

The Locust opening up for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (they may still be touring together as we 'speak') is pretty odd.

During The Locust's set the hardcore guys are at the front running around and slamming into each other, and then when the Yeah Yeah Yeahs go on the front is full of punkette Lizzie McGuires holding up cell phones and digital cameras.

Unum, Thursday, 20 November 2003 09:53 (twenty years ago) link

UB40 opening for Rush totally wins this thread.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 20 November 2003 13:22 (twenty years ago) link

Tad opening for Primus
Mudhoney opening for GWAR

I saw Laika open for Fiona Apple. It was actually a fucking really good show.

Not nearly as good as when my mom and grandma got to see that above-mentioned Hendrix/Monkees fiasco.

Also: Tom Waits w/ Fishbone.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 20 November 2003 15:18 (twenty years ago) link

When I was in high school my friend Josh saw Suicidal Tendencies open for Madonna!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 20 November 2003 15:19 (twenty years ago) link

Public Enemy and Big Audio Dynamite opening for U2 was a little unusual.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 20 November 2003 17:41 (twenty years ago) link

A friend of mine saw The Eagles open for Yes in the early 70s, which seems like a strange bill in hindsight. The same guy saw Hendrix open for The Monkees at the Delaware Co. fairgrounds in Muncie, Indiana.

earlnash, Thursday, 20 November 2003 17:46 (twenty years ago) link

I saw the 2 Live Crew open for Fishbone.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 20 November 2003 17:47 (twenty years ago) link

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would have ripped my own left testicle out, thrown it on the ground, and stomped it flat to have seen that!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 20 November 2003 18:19 (twenty years ago) link

It was at the Palladium, in NYC, in maybe 1991. Fishbone had not yet released The Reality Of My Surroundings (though a lot of those songs were in the set), and the 2 Live Crew had just gotten off their obscenity beef. They weren't listed on the bill; the poster just said "Very Special Guest" but it was written in a red-white-and-blue font very similar to that found on the cover of their Banned In The U.S.A. album, so I kinda figured it out. Anyway, they were amazing. They had three girls that they'd brought with 'em up on stage shakin' ass, and they hauled about a dozen more girls out of the audience.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 20 November 2003 18:33 (twenty years ago) link

Oh, how could I forget: Lee Dorsey opening for The Clash. Biggest disparity in talent between support and headliner ever?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 20 November 2003 18:54 (twenty years ago) link

one year passes...
The two that spring to mind are General Public (a band formed from alumni of Beat, Specials, Selecter members etc)supporting Queen at Wembley, and Aerosmith supported by Shed Seven in the same venue some twelve years later. Not to mention the one we've just had in the UK: Motley Crue plus Killing Joke.

Of course, these aren't so weird when you've worked in the music biz like I have and got used to the fact that agents arrange bills for reasons never to do with music whatsoever- it's all money and backhanders.

Others that spring to mind: Raging Slab and Claytown Troupe? Manic Street Preachers and Credit To The Nation? Black Crowes and Verve? Actually, that's not too odd. Verve were a rock band then, before they became 'The' Verve and started wearing Moccassins and twat-hats.

six years pass...

And I thought Earth Wind & Fire/Chicago was weird….

three years pass...

My friend was just telling me about seeing Genesis in Philly maybe '83, at JFK, with Elvis Costello, Blondie, Robert Hazard (maybe), the Hooters and Flock of Seagulls opening.

four years pass...

This summer Journey is hitting the road with ... The Pretenders.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 9 December 2019 18:05 (four years ago) link

yeah that's kind of weird. LiveNation package tour I assume; they're also doing: Liz Phair/Garbage/Alanis Morrissette. I can see some level of commonality there but frankly, almost no one I personally know who would like to see Garbage has any interest in anything by Liz Phair after 1994 and wouldn't be caught dead at an Alanis show.

akm, Monday, 9 December 2019 18:18 (four years ago) link

maybe I'm just projecting but I think there's a decent amount of overlap between Garbage and Phair fans, not so much with Alanis.

I think Phair/Alanis/Garbage is a great bill, and makes a lot of sense.

Garbage opened for Alanis in 1999.

the LiveNation listing is a pretty frank assessment of each act's relative commerical appeal:

Alanis Morissette w/special guest Garbage & also appearing Liz Phair

Saw Elvis and Blondie on that tour, outside (Parade Stadium in Minneapolis) at what I think they called a Beer and Barbecue Festival, along with Duran Duran, Greg Kihn and locals Sussman Lawrence (Peter Himmelman). Elvis was great (and the Durans).
