i am not spending the $35 asking price for this thing in nyc when i bought the last one for less than twenty.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:35 (seventeen years ago) link

at two discs to one!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:35 (seventeen years ago) link

$35!!!! woah! it's around the $23 mark here in the uk which is not bad for a triple lp.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Awesome! Haven't fully digested it yet, but I'm really diggin' the SLT track, which reminds me of Theo Parrish's spacier moments.

Also really liking the Horror Inc. track. I thought his last Revolver release was sweet, and this is more of the same eerie stuff.

Philippe, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I liked it quite a lot when I heard it the other day. Will reward relistens, definitely.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes! It's a bigger Theo Parrish ripoff than any Lawrence track -- and that's saying a lot.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:26 (seventeen years ago) link

who better to rip off though?

Yay!

This blows away Total 5.

I want an 80-minute version of the Sense Club track. (It does sorta sound like it's cut off at the end there.)

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 13 November 2003 19:50 (seventeen years ago) link

it's SO good. (Philip S. is reviwing for me yay!)

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 13 November 2003 19:56 (seventeen years ago) link

is total 5 really that bad? i don't have any of the total series but i see it's got "speaker" so it's prob. the first i'd buy.

also: is the stuff on sl3 in the vein of soulphiction? is it mixed?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 13 November 2003 20:00 (seventeen years ago) link

is total 5 really that bad?

No. Superlongevity three is that good.

also: is the stuff on sl3 in the vein of soulphiction? is it mixed?

Yes and no (my faves are Sense Club, STL, Horror Inc, Villalobos, Dimbiman); no.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 13 November 2003 20:05 (seventeen years ago) link

...and jabberjaw and melchior productions....

stirmonster, Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:54 (seventeen years ago) link

revive. i went to sleep last night to this and i couldn't sleep because my fingers were tapping and my body kept ticking and shivering to all the little sounds. it felt like gliding through a myriad of technoid projectiles.

scissors (Honda), Sunday, 23 November 2003 23:44 (seventeen years ago) link

its one of the only albums this year i've felt like putting on again after its finished.

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 23 November 2003 23:55 (seventeen years ago) link

i really dig it!

geeta (geeta), Monday, 24 November 2003 00:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Still having trouble soulseeking this :(

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 24 November 2003 00:17 (seventeen years ago) link

buy it!

gaz (gaz), Monday, 24 November 2003 00:23 (seventeen years ago) link

not to be 'pop hater' or whatever but that markus nicolai track is kinda a sore thumb for me. in a different context maybe?

scissors (Honda), Monday, 24 November 2003 00:29 (seventeen years ago) link

"i am not spending the $35 asking price for this thing"

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 24 November 2003 00:30 (seventeen years ago) link

colin - do you have this? ;)

raphael diligent (Cozen), Monday, 24 November 2003 00:30 (seventeen years ago) link

fair enough sonny. that seems ridiculous...

gaz (gaz), Monday, 24 November 2003 00:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Multiple stores in my area have the CD for $18 or less.

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 24 November 2003 00:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Any word on the CD version yet? It appears the 2-LP tracks add up to 82 minutes and change.

Curt (cgould), Monday, 24 November 2003 00:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Half.com has it for $25 incl. shipping, but it says the list price is $40

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 24 November 2003 00:41 (seventeen years ago) link

The CD is over 81 minutes in length, yeah.

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 24 November 2003 00:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Super.

Curt (cgould), Monday, 24 November 2003 01:06 (seventeen years ago) link

two months pass...
Revive.

I am slow. I just now realized why Perlon calls their comps Superlongevity. Is this made apparent on any of the album covers, where they crop in on the name? (I don't have any covers at hand here.)

Also, has anyone had problems playing CDs that exceed 80 minutes? i don't have any that I am aware of. I've looked into burning one of SL3, but on a Mac, it looks like running Nero through Virtual PC might be my best option. Still, I've seen warnings that some burners may not be capable of it, and some players may not play them.

Curt (cgould), Monday, 23 February 2004 06:36 (seventeen years ago) link

"I don't have any that I am aware of." = any 80 min. + CDs, NOT any problems playing them.

Curt (cgould), Monday, 23 February 2004 06:39 (seventeen years ago) link

"not to be 'pop hater' or whatever but that markus nicolai track is kinda a sore thumb for me. in a different context maybe?"

Haven't heard Superlongevity 3 but am I alone in almost always liking Nicolai's stuff more than anything else on Perlon. Briefly I was like, "no, I love Hombre Ojo even more", and then I found out that it was Nicolai under a different name.

Actually Perlon's a good example of a label where its two leading producers (Nicolai and Zip/Dimbiman) totally define its split-personality-style aesthetic range.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 23 February 2004 07:00 (seventeen years ago) link

i like dimbiman stuff lots, it's got like a princey sly malevolence

prima fassy (mwah), Monday, 23 February 2004 10:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Not trying to criticise Dimbiman at all - I guess I'm a pop song kinda guy is all and Nicolai's the only Perlon producer who's serious about pop songs.

Usually when I fail to connect with Perlon grooves it's because all the melodic/textural components of the groove are kinda changeless from bar to bar - I prefer the grooves which have that jungle-like split-speed between rhythm and melody.

Like, the stuff I really like on Superlongevity is stuff like Luciano's "Indio Muerto" or Pantytec's "You Are So 99" or the Hombre Ojo or "The Unexpected Guest". cf. something like Pile's "Just One Of Those Days" which totally relies on its spoken word narrative to actually move forward at all.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 02:55 (seventeen years ago) link

i can't remember a single thing about this record.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:36 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't trust these statements of yours Jess. I delayed buying Villalobos for ages because of your dismissal!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:40 (seventeen years ago) link

i will listen to it tonight before i go to bed, i think. i remember it feeling very grey, almost cold.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:42 (seventeen years ago) link

but yeah, villalobos was my major oversight of '03, in much the same way that 2 many DJs was my major oversight of '02.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I should clarify though: I sort of say I don't trust such statements because I myself often find it difficult to decide whether I love microhouse-y mixes (esp. of the Perlon kind) for ages after I get them - this happened to me with Taka Taka too. The discreteness of the music allows it to teeter between brilliance and boredom and for a long time it feels like it could go either way.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:47 (seventeen years ago) link

i know what you mean: a lot of time i feel like my opinions on minimal dance is not to be trusted because i am so resolutely picky and random about it...i'm not really sure i even like the idea of minimal techno/house at base. sometimes.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Because it can hold too closely to certain constraints?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 05:14 (seventeen years ago) link

mmm...because a. i'm a vulgarities guy at heart, i think, b. the pure muchness of what's out there coupled with the changing-sameness of the product [dj fodder or not...and kind of a moot point with mixes and comps and single artist lps] does add fuel to my feeling that there's just too much undistinguished music out there these days, and c. it sometimes seems like a lot of work to wade through it all just for that one track with a real good hi-hat sound for eight minutes.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 05:19 (seventeen years ago) link

do you guys like regular techno like from a few years back?
Dave Clark, Jeff Mills, 69, ect...

to me the micro thing made the house thing interesting rather than reverse. I like the cold sound of techno that is somehow warmed by the occassional forays into emotion that micohouse does. Although at times some of the perlon stuff almost seems like dj tools (which i am not fond of) rather than proper techno

hector (hector), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 05:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah "DJ Tools" is a good shorthand term for what I was saying before about the Perlon tracks I don't click with. It's interesting how Perlon and Playhouse have a similar overall sonic approach but Perlon is so tracky (Nicolai excepted) and Playhouse so songful.

Lately almost all of the "micro"-house I've clicked with has been of the rougher and tougher variety - see the second half of that Sami Koivikko mix or this excellent mix (the first one) which intersperses microhouse with marvellous steroid electro and techno.

When I finished my doctorate a few years ago, one off my gifts to myself was to fill in the gaps of my Perlon collection, including every release from their first ten years (though I’m still missing Morane the beach. That collection is among my most prized possessions - perlon has been such a guiding light for me since I started listened to house. Even if I’m not always excited by their more recent stuff, I’ve always felt something special about Perlon

My favourite release and 20 other favourites, ordered chronologically and spanning the label’s history.

🏆#1 Narcotic Syntax - Calculated Licentious Extravagance

Dimbiman - Good Morning Eyeball
