The Books - The Lemon of Pink

Whatcha reckon? Better than Thought for Food? Not quite as good as? I've only listened to it a few times so far, and right now I'm leaning toward the latter, perhaps because it's not too different from Thought so the whole Books thing is not as novel this time around. That said, I do really like "Tokyo" and "Take Time".

I saw them about a week and a half ago - the music was beautiful. Apparently the woman who guested on Thought for Food, Anne Doerner, is now a full-time member. Great move, as her singing and instrumentation really fleshed out their sound, gave the whole group more material to play with and off. She sang solo on a Creole folk song and gave a wonderful performance; it knocked everyone out - standing o, the whole bit. I think it is on the new one. I was only familiar with the Thought for Food stuff. They did quite a bit of material from the new record it seems, and it all sounded fantastic. They were selling CDs after the show, but they were kinda expensive - I figure I'll pick it up later.

Mr. D, are you talking about the Third Coast Festival performance? (I was there; they were fantastic.)

I say the new one is essentially just as good. I hear way too many records now to expect a reinvention w/ each new one. They have a good thing going & they stick with it so I'm happy.

jaymc - yeah, that was the show I attended! All the performers were great. I was really psyched to hear Gregory Whitehead perform too.

much much better than "thought for food." everything i pretended/dreamed that tff was, but made real. full, human, fascinating, distant.

i think the sound is better on the new one, but with the addition of a singer, i was kinda hoping for better (structured well w/pop hooks, etc.) songs. sadly it almost seems like theyve taken the addition of a vocalist as an excuse to put less effort into making good songs. i still think it kicks complete ass, just not as much as the last one.
"but made real. full, human, fascinating, distant."
i think it's a lot less distant and full than the last one.

i've only heard lemon of pink but it's a lovely, understated collection of tunes. if you all say the other ones just as good then i'll be picking that one up soon as well.

nine months pass...
Got this the other day, it's really great. I like the meandering turns it takes, and the cut up sounds popping up here and there.

three years pass...

too many samples, but there are some really nice moments

Anything new from this band? Their last album was, what, four years ago?

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 12 May 2008 12:30 (sixteen years ago) link

four years ago and not very good

Charlie Howard, Monday, 12 May 2008 13:05 (sixteen years ago) link

I thought Lost and Safe was okay. Nowhere near as inventive or -- for all the talk, at the time, about how The Books were going for a more conventional sound -- as catchy as The Lemon Of Pink. But what they were going for on Lost and Safe made me v. interested in hearing their next project, which is why I'm wondering where they've gone off to.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 12 May 2008 14:21 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, they did sort of vanish didn't they? i might have stopped thinking about them all together if i didn't still play the first two records every so often.

Charlie Howard, Monday, 12 May 2008 14:24 (sixteen years ago) link

lost and safe is 3 years of age exactly and is their best record by far.

jed_, Monday, 12 May 2008 15:09 (sixteen years ago) link

i don't agree, but i'm ready for a re-appraisal :)

Charlie Howard, Monday, 12 May 2008 15:12 (sixteen years ago) link

They were touring around as a two-person group last year around this time, but I think it was all old material.

mh, Monday, 12 May 2008 18:26 (sixteen years ago) link

All three are equally interchangeable for me. Like, if someone told me that all three albums came from the same sessions in the late 90s/early 00s, I'd believe it.

Thought for Food: Very Good
Lemon of Pink: Very Gooder
Lost and Safe: Very Goodest

Mackro Mackro, Monday, 12 May 2008 19:03 (sixteen years ago) link

"Very Goodest" leaves little room for higher praise for the next album.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 12 May 2008 19:07 (sixteen years ago) link

i actually listened to this last week and quite enjoyed it. have nothing else by this band.

fourteen years pass...

so I have been thinking a lot about the last track on here, "P.S.", and how it's sort of a distillation of the album as a whole. maybe it was made as a joke, in fact it probably was, but I still find something profound in it. if you don't remember basically what they did was take an interview they recorded and edited out all the actual thoughts, so all you hear is stammers and chuckles, the sound of people breathing, plus some filler words like "yeah", "well", "uh...", etc. But what's neat is you still can pick up on the tone of the conversation, the general cordial atmosphere, but also that struggle they have of really articulating what they're trying to say. Which tend to be what you actually remember about certain interactions from long ago. idk if that was at all what they're going for but **Marge Simpson voice** I just think it's neat

You're reminding me of the unusual pleasures of these rekkids----here's my preview of their Columbus oh show of long ago (2011):

The Books
Thursday @ Wexner
The Books play (and sample) plucked, strummed and bowed instruments, while talking and singing with countless other sounds, also sampled (and played). Waves of fragments move calmly, and, on their first album, The Lemon of Pink, venerable voices provide “helpful” gibberish. The Books like to ricochet through such decay, although the subsequent Lost & Save risks spelling this out a little too plainly, before zigzagging through unexpected insights and comedy. Their new version of Nick Drake’s “Cello Song” even grooves with the glitches of a cheapo CD-R!

That's their version of "Cello Song," with Jose Gonzalez, contributed to the Red Hot charity comp, Dark Was The Night.

These guys were insanely good at capturing both the happiness and sadness of being a human being.
